ParticipantSomething else I wanted to mention to go along with the “ignorance” theme we see in this chapter–by the time Harry is released from his “jail sentence” it’s the summer holiday. According to the Harry Potter wikia, Dudley was born in June. As an American, I’m not 100% sure this is right (maybe POM can clarify) but my brief research suggests that British school summer holidays begin in July.
July is when the majority of schools break up for Summer Holidays and then they go back in September. Private schools might work differently.
He might have still been allowed to go to school, but was forced to stay in his cupboard whenever he was back home. Otherwise, the school would have been calling up on the Dursleys inquiring why Harry was absent for so long. Sure the Dursleys could have tried pretending that Harry was sick, but would such a charade be able to last that long? Also, the fact that it’s brought up that Harry was supposed to be going to Stone Wall High suggests that Harry did graduate Grade School.
I agree. The Dursleys would have only got away with saying Harry was sick for so long before a truant officer was sent to check how true the claims were. The Dursleys want to keep their treatment of Harry a secret so they wouldn’t want to go inviting trouble. Also I get the sense that that the Dursleys like to keep up appearances with the neighbours. Having a truant officer turn up on their doorstep would get curtains twitching. So as Matt said, Harry was probably sent to school but then locked in the cupboard once he returned home.
Why do you think Harry never told anyone what was going on at the Dursleys? Did he accept it as a fact of life, assume that’s how every family works? Did he think nobody would believe him? Did he think nobody would care?

ParticipantI saw an episode of How I met Your Mother with the actress who plays Lesley.
The two people on Gordon’s right I think one is Roman Sionis aka Black Mask, he just has that look about him. I know the actor was in True Blood and the Tudors but I can’t remember his name.
I have know idea who the woman is. She looks catwomanish but we already have a young Catwoman. She could be Talia al Ghul but it seems too early to be introducing any league of shadows stuff especially as we had the Nolan movies feature them. Maybe she’s a vigilante crime fighter?

ParticipantApparently, Harry Potter was born in 1980, with the majority of the series taking place between 1991-1997, based on various clues form the books. Here’s one site explaining it: http://www.hp-lexicon.org/timelines/main/timeline_1990s.html
That explains how the Dursleys got away with how they treated Harry.

ParticipantUK schools aren’t given yearly vision screenings.
Also something that might be worth considering is when does the story of Harry Potter take place? It is timeless in the sense that it doesn’t feel dated, however, times do change so what might’ve been acceptable then might not be considered acceptable now. Example: People are more aware of the signs of abuse now than they were back in the day.
If Harry went to school now, his plight would probably be picked up sooner.

ParticipantI think a new companion should be someone from a past era who would be amazed at modern every day objects. Snowman Clara would’ve been good (and she seemed smart but not too in your face) but I hate modern Clara, I was disappointed when she wasn’t killed off in the Christmas special which, up until that point had been the best episode in 12’s run so far.

ParticipantGoing with the idea that Harry’s magicalness is a metaphor for “otherness”, in this case being gay, then it’s interesting to note where he sleeps: in a cupboard under the stairs. A storage cupboard which would other wise be known as a closet. Harry’s magicalness is kept from the outside wide, in other words, Harry is literally “in the closet”.
Also of point is how Harry’s skinniness is mentioned. The fact that he has to wear clothes that are too big for him makes him look skinnier. The phrase “skin and bone” springs to mind. Harry is treated as the Dursleys’ dirty secret. He is literally their “skeleton in the closet”.
Skipping ahead briefly, the fact Harry is later upgraded to an actual room in the Dursley house is not only harsher in hindsight (why was Harry in the cupboard at all if there was a room available he could’ve slept in?)but also suggests that the secret surrounding Harry is becoming too big to contain.
On a side note, who took Harry to get his glasses? Provided they’re prescription ones, he would’ve required an eye test and will require regular eye sight tests to makes sure his glasses are doing their job properly. Even if they were just cheap off-the shelf ones from a supermarket, he would’ve had to try glasses on to find the best fit. Either Harry’s eyesight is slightly askew from wearing improper glasses or someone at the opticians should’ve picked up on how mistreated Harry is.

ParticipantI hate modern Clara as a companion. Oswin and Snowman Clara were okay but modern Clara is just irritating and last series was too much the Clara show. The Christmas special was okay as a would-be send off for the character but, no, Clara stayed which is a major disappointment as up to that point that has been the only episode of Capaldi’s run that I liked.
The balance is all out on Doctor Who at the moment, it needs to have both light and dark aspects not dark and darker. I loved Matt Smith’s (although when modern Clara entered the picture it wasn’t as good as the Amy Pond era) run because although his run was darker than Tennant’s, his doctor balanced it out. Capaldi isn’t a bad doctor but the chemistry is all wrong with Clara- they do not bounce off of each other naturally. The 12/Clara pairing is certainly no 10/Donna or 11/Amy.
I did not enjoy series 8 of Doctor Who, I only watched it because it was Doctor Who. I’m fed up of all the characters treating Clara as if the sun shines out her backside.
Unfortunately such is my distaste for Clara and series 8 in general, that series 9 of Doctor Who may be my last unless Clara shuts the hell up/disappears permanently and the Doctor becomes the main focus once more.

ParticipantOk, this was just pointed out to me by @Runaroundmacy
Isaac did not bring Christianity to the EF. Guys…he was Jewish.
How do we know he was Jewish?

ParticipantThere are a couple ways to go about it. Keeping it with one person is probably not a good idea because it makes that one person a target. The best move would be to devise a way so that the dagger switches people ever few hours or something. So Snow passes it to Grumpy who passes it to Granny to passes it to Blue who passes it Hook who passes it to Belle who passes it Charming and so on and so forth. It keeps the Dark Swan on the run trying to intercept the dagger before it is passed off while making her angry and therefore more likely to make a mistake. What they shouldn’t do is keep it to one person because Emma will eventually figure out who has it and go after that one person–be it Snow, Charming, Hook or Henry–more focused and on her game, so to speak.
I disagree. 1. You can’t necessarily trust people to hand over the dagger when they are supposed to (I can’t see Hook handing over the dagger to someone like Grumpy). 2. Surely it would be better not have people carrying the dagger on them. Emma could just make a threat which could scare someone into handing the dagger back to her out of fear.
Surely the better option would be to seal the dagger either in Regina’s vault or Gold’s shop with blood magic so that it can’t be accessed by Emma or anyone else Emma might’ve scared into co-operating. So Snowing and Henry would be out because they share the same blood. They could use Regina’s blood but then threatening Robin or Henry would get her to co-operate. Belle’s blood wouldn’t work because of Moe. They wouldn’t want to use Rumple’s or Zelena’s blood because that is just a bad idea. Hook’s blood would be an option because he doesn’t have any family in Storybrooke, however, if something does happen and he decides to be uncooperative because he doesn’t care about anyone besides himself and Emma then that leaves everyone up a creek without a paddle………but on the plus side Emma can’t get the dagger.

ParticipantDoesn’t Rumple have the holy grail though? In Skin Deep? He takes it off the pedestal to put the chipped cup in its place.
