ParticipantI think we should be critical of yet more white women being cast in this show, anyway. It’s gotten crazy at this point – OUAT had a race problem going into this season and did nothing but add more white characters, with the exception of Ursula who got written off after 4 episodes. It’s crazy.
The truth is when it comes to racism is that it’s white people, and the wider institution they represent that are “stuck on race”. It’s very victim blamey to throw the buck back at other PoC or people advocating for this case and not those who continually undercast PoC in everything. Focusing on race when there is a race problem is a good thing. Problems don’t get better by not talking about them.
As I posted in the other Lily thread, is it not racism and exclusion to say to a white woman “You can’t have this role because you’re white”?
Discrimination is a two way street.
@Crystal Princess i totally respect your opinion and your right to voice it, as i hope you respect mine to express and view a different aspect. I also see that OUAT/OUATW has broken barriers as to typical princesses, heroes and who plays them offerring more that other shows the opportunity for POC, cultural & ethnic backgrounds to play roles they usually do not protray (i.e. Ursula, Rapunzel, Lancelot, Poseidon, etc.). Neither you nor I are the casting directors, producers, writers, etc. and therefore, we cannot fully judge why this or that actor was ultimately given a role; to flatly assume it was racial based I believe is unfair. It is quite possible that the decision was made because they wanted adult Lily to more closely resemble Mal, while young Lily could have been played by a more wide net of actors. I truly don’t believe “race” was a factor nor that they are “whitewashing” the character. Let’s just agree to disagree

Well said.

ParticipantHowever, if Agnes was the best person for the job and they’ve made her look enough like the younger actress in order to pass as the same person then I’ve got no complaints.
Asking an actress to dye her hair dark to better resemble a WoC is pretty gross to begin with.
Also, it’s very convenient how often the “best person for the job” is a white woman. We need to stop pulling this argument because it makes the assumption that there isn’t a WoC who’s just as good(if not better) which ignores the reality of racism and exclusion.
Is it not also racism and exclusion to say to a white woman “you can’t have this job because you’re white”?
I don’t know whether the role of older Lily went to audition or not or whether the casting people specifically chose Agnes for the role without auditions, but the point is the casting people can only choose from the select group they had, they can’t magic up a latina actress if none auditioned for the part. Young Lily went to audition and didn’t specify a race for the character and clearly the young Lily actress was the best person they saw. They didn’t pick her because she’s latina, thy picked her because she was the best person for the job. Roles shouldn’t automatically be given based on race or skin colour because that is just box ticking. Sometimes the casting calls specify race for certain characters eg Mulan’s casting call, but most often they’re open to everyone regardless of race and skin colour. It is then up to the casting team to choose the best person for the job. The best person for the job should not be based on what race or skin colour they are but on their acting skills.

ParticipantSnowing, and especially Snow, are full of hypocrisy. Snow only cares about herself and what she wants.

ParticipantHOW do you think the peddler/ author changed the story? What kind of impact do you think he had / has? IS he the cause of the upcoming war between good and bad? Can he still change the story in the future?
I would like your input as I am still contemplating this development …. I will be back later to expound on what I think.Nonnie
I think the author manipulates events then writes the fallout. For example, Snowing were heading home when the author stopped them and sent them in the other direction thus causing the events which led to Mal losing her child.

ParticipantThe Brothers Grimm were Snow White’s original tellers. Perhaps the authors only see bits and pieces and they do their best to connect the dots? As the stories pass down through the ages bits get rewritten?

ParticipantSo we’re to believe that Snow and Charming of the past did something so horrible and yet it never seemed to impact their consciences until now, when the plot suddenly calls for it? Yeah right.
Right this really bothers me.
Also, why didn’t Mal seek revenge on these two in the months following them stealing the egg? Why was she just chilling in her castle with a pet unicorn?
Regina stole the curse before Snowing stole Mal’s baby. Mal may have been depressed and her punishment in Storybrooke is a lot harsher.
Mal had to protect the failsafe no matter what. Even when she was killed, she still had to protect the failsafe in Zombie form. Mal failed to protect her child. As Winifred Sanderson put it “His (Her) punishment will not be to die but to live forever with his (her) guilt”

ParticipantI really hope they don’t kill off Rumple. He’s one of the reasons I watch the show. If he goes, the show will definitely lose one of their major assets. RC leaving is the beginning of the end of Once.

ParticipantI am seriously questioning the healthiness of CS’s relationship within the show even beyond the usual stuff. Hook getting jealous over Emma’s friendship with August is a bit of a red flag in my opinion. Emma shouldn’t have to justify herself to Hook over August. The fact that she feels she does implies that Hook doesn’t really trust her to be friends with a guy without something else going on. Then towards the end, it felt like Hook was giving his blessing/permission for Emma to be friends with August. Emma doesn’t need Hook’s consent to do anything least of all who she can/can’t be friends with. That just seemed a bit too controlling on Hook’s part for my liking.
You mean like on 315 Emma having to ask permission to hook to talk with Neal at the hospital.
If I had faith in the writers actually having the balls to do such a thing, I would say that they have been cleverly crafting a story of an abusive relationship involving CS to show that anyone, even someone “strong” like Emma, could find themselves in an emotionally abusive relationship. Those little “moments” we have seen of Hook shows a controlling side that Emma might not be aware of yet. Another example, where Hook gave Neal “permission” in 3A to have a go with Emma (with the implication that Neal would fail and Hook would swoop in to pick up the pieces), where Hook tried it on with Tinkerbell trying to make Emma jealous etc.

ParticipantI didn’t like how Snowing were totally okay with taking someone else’s child and pouring their child’s potential darkness into it because A) they didn’t think it would be human, and B) because they were going to give it back to the mother.
Snowing only got upset about what they did because Mal’s baby got sent through a portal. They should’ve been upset about the fact they TOOK SOMEONE’S CHILD (whether it is human or not is irrelevant) and experimented with it.
