Channing Dungey said that they won’t be doing as big of a gap strategy as in the past. So could this be the end of OUAT’s split-Season format?

Hopefully. I don’t think the split season has worked as well as it was originally intended to. Everything is rushed because instead of spreading one arc out over the two halves they’re trying to squash two arcs in so neither arc gets the development it deserves. Everything is plot driven, there are plot devices galore, characterisation suffers to suit the plot.

The two halves could’ve been set out as: End of A, Villain wins. B involves the “heroes” coming back from their defeat and ultimate overcoming the villain to win.

    or

End of A, “heroes” have won and they think everything’s OK but Shock! the villain isn’t done yet and is quietly plotting their revenge which would lead into B where the villain does a counter attack which severely damage the “heroes” but they come back stronger and defeat the villain once and for all.

The split season had so much potential but it was never met.

I think one of the “untold stories” could be Oliver Twist. Disney did its own version of it with Oliver and Company.

I think I am already starting to feel those first few feelings of “Omg when is Once coming back on, its been forever -_-” feelings that I get when the show goes off for the breaks.

I know what you mean but this time it’s “I wish season six would get here” rather than “Thank god that season is over”

Is anyone else super annoyed that Snow basically threw Belle under the bus to save Hook, Charming and her own skin? (I doubt she dives a darn about Zelena). Snow just couldn’t keep her big fat mouth shut and basically planted the idea in Hyde’s mind to target the dark one’s wife and unborn child. Ugh!

I was. But that’s typical of Snow and the rest. None of them give a flying rodent’s backside about Belle. So while it’s all well and good to berate Rumple (he is being a questionable jerk, as he does, no argument from me), he’s also the only one batting for Belle’s team on this show, ever. So while he did, certainly, screw up with that crystal (because PLOT needs Rumple to do this), I think it’s useful to put this in context. None of the “heroes” are going to lift a finger to help Belle. Not even her father will lift a finger to help Belle.

    The girl needs better friends.

Ahh not the whole jump the shark thing again. It certainly had it’s flaws, and they did it for the ratings, but I actually thought the way they incorporated frozen was quite good. And although the show has certainly changed, there are still episodes that are on par or even better than episodes in seasons 1-3. Or at least, that’s what I think. If anything, the story now usually suffers the most when it is simply plot driven and not character driven. But when they take the time to develop the original cast (Regina and Emma’s chat in Neal’s apt in the 5b finale), the show is still quite good.

I agree to an extent. I don’t think the show has jumped the shark yet (at the very least 5B has pulled it back from that point). I also agree about the show being better when it’s more character driven and focusses on the original cast and fleshes them out more instead of being completely plot driven.

I have to disagree about Frozen. It was too new to fit into the show seamlessly which made it seem like a cash grab. The fact that the Disney movies are in the show’s continuity (Neal telling Mulan about a movie being made about her) throws the timeline because either Emma had just met the newest Disney Princess who’s movie was barely a year old, or Emma is about to see a 100% accurate retelling of her new friend’s life. Basically Once was going: For Elsa’s backstory, see Frozen.

The main aspect of the Frozen arc I disliked was Anna. She was annoying and I HATED the way the show made her the reason Charming and Belle are like they are. Charming wasn’t courageous because that is who he is as a person, he was only like that because he met Anna who inspired him. Belle was never brave, she was only like that because she met Anna who inspired her. The fact that the show tried to make Anna a part of some of the main cast’s backstories (Charming, Belle, Rumple) was very cliché and it made me dislike Anna more than I already did. Hook is preferable to Anna.

I know the show is more concerned with redemption over justice but is one selfless act enough to do undo all the bad when there has been that much bad?

The wording of that reminds of the scene between Loki and Black Widow in the Avengers.

When the coins were raining down on Charming and co in Hyde’s world, all I could think was: Isn’t that potentially lethal to them? They tell you not to throw coins or anything else off the Eiffel tower/ Empire state building because as it falls, it picks up speed and can do some serious injury/damage to whatever it hits. Suddenly there are all these coins falling from the sky. Even if it’s not coming at them from a great height and speed, it would still hurt because they’re still having lots of pieces of metal thrown at them.

Screwball Ninja summed up Rumple’s role throughout the seasons well: Rumple switches sides because he NEEDS to switch sides, because his narrative function is to be a POTENTIAL villain. Why is this necessary? Because OUAT runs on villains, and they need a strong pinch-hitter on the bench.

This is actually an interesting essay from Screwball Ninja.

In this latest arc, none of the ‘heroes’ interacted with Belle, unless you count Zelena. They do however, use her to manipulate Rumple. I know Belle has the narrative function of pulling Rumple back from the darkness, but they could do more with her character.

I completely agree. The writers don’t seem to realise that by not having the “heroes” interact with Belle outside of when they want her to do research, it’s actually making them look bad because they are using her. It’s even worse when they use Belle as a means to manipulate Rumple because the “heroes” aren’t actually considering Belle’s feelings in the matter, she is simply a means to get Rumple to do what they want.
