Where was the issue resolved? Like as the person(or one of the people) affected I’m kind of the one who gets to decide that really…

People just didn’t continue to reply to that line of argument. There were still some very oppressive things said and responsibility is taken I feel extremely uncomfortable. I want a proper apology from her or it will just happen again.

Everyone needs to read the articles in “Privilege and Allies” here.

I just have to say that after reading her posts I’m really really uncomfortable with WickedRegal’s “sorry not sorry” approach to this. Just about any Ally 101 will tell you those sort of posts are a  awful way to deal with these issues and are seriously showing privilege. Acting all edgy and rebellious towards an oppressed group is missed up. You’re not sticking it to the man, you’re being the man.

If you say something crappy or oppressive, take responsibility for that. Don’t go on about how it was an “accident” or “not your intent” while intentionally condescending the people you’ve hurt. That’s just so awful on so many levels and I’m not even sure where to start explaining why, but I hope for my own sanity people get that what WickedRegal has done in this thread has made me feel deeply uncomfortable with continuing it.

*treading carefully* …. well just to ask this question, is it wrong to assume that a character is straight until proven otherwise?

Yes. Yes it is. That’s heteronormativity and it’s wrong. You shouldn’t need “proof” a character is gay. If a character’s sexuality is not declared, it could go either way. While straightness is more common, queer characters are often relegated to subtext in the first place so that evens it out a lot.

Just got to ask this…Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo just because Elsa doesn’t have a love interest in Frozen….automatically makes her a lesbian????? Well, whether Elsa is or isn’t a lesbian shouldn’t be our main concern…she’s only going to have nine episodes, so I doubt she even gets a love interest unless the show decides to make her a series regular! Hey…I’d have Elsa over Zelena anyday!

This will be a fun Season 4…I hope Adam and Eddy know what they were signing themselves up for because whether they do Frozen justice or not depends on the make it or break it of the series.

And making sure Adam and Eddy get this danmn story right is what matters, and not have it being screwed up like Oz was! They killed poor little Toto, cmon we all know that he was under that house. And the Good Witch of the East….pfft yeah right!

All they give us queers is subtext and then when we take that subtext we get made fun of or accused of reading too far into things.

I feel really upset and angry reading this.

I hope A and E read this interview/ watch OITNB

Laverne Cox (OITNB) on being Transgender

    She also looks stunning

I think they should make Ruby transgender, it would fit in a really weird way and Meghan Ory is kinda andro looking but in a really hot way.

It occurred to me earlier that Disney themselves have kind of dealt with a transgender character in one of their movies. I’m talking about Mulan. Whilst it’s true that Mulan still identifies herself as a woman and the men identify themselves as men so it’s not 100% transgender ie man trapped in a woman’s body and or vice versa, they still have the majority of the movie with their main female character dressing and acting like a man. They also have some of their male characters disguising themselves as women in full make up and dress. So Disney have kind of explored the cross-dressing aspect of transgender albeit for a purpose (fooling the huns, Mulan taking her father’s place in the war) rather than the deeper issues of gender identity crisis (Mulan dressed like a man to take her father’s place in the war rather than dressing like a man because she felt like she was a man trapped in a woman’s body).

Mulan doesn’t conform to her society’s expectation of women of that time. In the song “honour to us all” it states the roles of men and women. For example:
“A girl can bring her family
    great honor in one way
    By striking a good match
And this could be the day

Men want girls with good taste
    Calm
    Obediant
    Who work fast-paced
    With good breeding
    And a tiny waist
You’ll bring honor to us all

We all must serve our Emperor
Who guards us from the Huns
    A man by bearing arms
    A girl by bearing sons”

Basically it says that men’s role is to fight for the country whilst a woman’s role is to get married, be everything her husband desires in a woman and have sons. When Mulan tries to be “the little woman” expected of her rather than who she truly is, it all goes terribly wrong, as seen in the matchmaker scene.

Mulan’s Reflection song could easily be sung by someone who feels like they are in the wrong body. The lyrics go:

    “Look at me
I will never pass for a perfect bride
    Or a perfect daughter
    Can it be
I’m not meant to play this part?

    Now I see
That if I were truly to be myself
I would break my family’s heart

Who is that girl I see
    Staring straight back at me?
Why is my reflection someone I don’t know?

Somehow I cannot hide who I am, though I’ve tried
When will my reflection show who I am inside?”

Mulan on Once upon a Time identifies herself as a woman, but she still dresses in more masculine clothes rather than girly dresses, and that is presented as absolutely okay on the show. The show may not ever do a 100% transgender character, but they have introduced aspects of it.

I do wonder if maybe the Mulan/Aurora storyline being swept under the carpet a little bit was due to the actress availability issues (Both actresses had other shows) rather than a conscious attempt by the writers to sweep LGBT characters under the rug. After all, if the writers didn’t really want to introduce an LGBT character, why write Mulan as one? With Jamie Chung’s (Mulan) show being cancelled, and both Aurora/Philip and Robin Hood/merry men in Storybrooke, it’s entirely possible that Mulan is in Storybrooke too and that we just haven’t seen her yet. 3B was mostly focussed around the regulars and the characters they just so happened to interact with at a time so it’s entirely possible that Mulan has been around but off-screen. Season 4 could bring Mulan back and continue her storyline.

I’m kinda not okay with Mulan being trans just because she dresses more masculinely. I don’t think that’s evidence of being trans, more like she wanted to be taken seriously.

I think that’s a really good point @Phee. So far, one of the biggest criticisms I’ve read about doing Frozen for S4A is that it screams gimmicky and is an obvious ratings ploy. If they were to mix it up with Elsa being a lesbian, that might take some of the gimmicky quality out of it.

Pretty much my feelings on it.

I gueesssssss but it’s more like they have stuff in common because they’re similar figures within their source material.

Jelsa is popular on the web, but you are aware that the Jack Frost version all this shipping is based on is not a Disney character but an animated character by DreamWorks Animation/Paramount Pictures based on a book series by William Joyce? And no, these books are far from being public domain, they just have been published. Of course though there could be a Jack Frost, he is a folklore character as the spirit, personification of winter, but that would have to be some very different character to avoid any copyrights issues. So, not the Jelsa you might be hoping for.

It’s kind of lame IMO because it’s like “Well you both have ice powers and sister issues sooooo!”
