ParticipantWith the Into the Woods movie they should definitely drop some allusions into it.
Like if the concept of SnowWolf comes up, Ruby could just say “Well, anything can happen in the woods…”
This goes entirely over David’s head.

ParticipantIt would be more amusing if Snow admitted to a brief affair with Ruby.
Ruby is worse than Regina for having eye sex with everyone.

ParticipantPoM why can’t the LGBT couple have drama just like a straight couple? Like I think it’s important to recognise the differences and pretending there aren’t won’t make them go away but you shouldn’t feel obliged to put them there, that’s sort of oppression in of itself.

ParticipantI think it’s really important to understand that glossing over the real issues faced by LGBT people and just having them “exactly the same as everyone else” is NOT representative of reality and can give people the false impression that there are no issues of privilege etc. that we need to tackle to achieve real equality/social justice. There is the idea, mostly held by straight people who consider themselves not atallhomophobic(looking at you Jim Sterling) that understated gay romances are the best way to do it, period. Because it’s not making a “big deal of it”, as if art should never be used to teach anything.
HOWEVER OUAT is a fairytale show and while it’s possible to deal with those issues here I do agree that there are all sorts of problems that could come up here, and in this case, because it’s providing queer people with their fairy tale romances at long last etc., it should just be a thing that happens. OUAT is already dangerously close to soap opera territory and we need to avoid that. Most likely it’ll be minor quips etc. that reference the idea of homophobia but not something any one character commits to – which would be very in character for Snowing for example – so we don’t ignore the idea but it’s not an actual part of the story that affects anything.
S1 Snow White is one of my favourite characters and there was a time when I looked on Snowing fondly, so I would hate for a character I identify with be one that does not truly accept my existence. That’s really important to consider.
Interestingly enough, the whole “Surprise! Being queer is actually super normal here, we just haven’t talked about it yet.” is something Gregory Maguire’s Wicked Years series did with Oz and it’s kind of interesting. They could actually use this, far from glossing over the idea of homophobia, to make a sort of mockery of it. “Wow, you accept all this weird crap with reanimated dragon fairy witches and magic portal beans but two guys kissing is too much? Really?” that sort of subtext could be very powerful.

ParticipantSorry for worrying everyone!
Also I just finished watching the Spiderwick Chronicles, lol. Weird how she looks so different yet I still immediately recognised her.

ParticipantI feel like while there should definitely be a gay male relationship, that doesn’t really help me with my problem of not feeling represented in the show. There is a sizeable queer female following of OUAT whereas I don’t think there is as much of a queer male one, so they should try and have something for that part of the fanbase first.
I have to disagree here, OUAT has yet to present a male/male relationship at all, whereas at least they have shown Mulan/Aurora. I’m not a queer woman, but I too feel slightly misrepresented since I’m black. Every black character we’ve had has either been unimportant, evil, gone missing from the show, dead, or all of the above. But that doesn’t mean just because the black viewers of OUAT may be minimal than other races, that we shouldn’t get shown more often either so that they can have something for the others. Besides, shouldn’t showing great portrayal of a queer couple in general be a good thing for ALL members of the LGBT community?
OUAT has a serious race problem and it’s difficult to discuss it in the fandom.
I’m not dismissing the idea of a male gay romance at all – it’s just the most demand out there ATM is for a queer female relationship and I feel that should be answered to. Of course – there should be queer male ships too. But this is a show where the ladies are a little more prominent.

ParticipantUnless she’s putting on a brave face. Idk, something looked a little off about her in that scene.

ParticipantWhat if instead of having Elsa be the love interest of a previously established character (Mulan, Tink, Red, ect) they introduce a totally new character? I know that they can’t do Narnia because of rights, but is it possible to introduce say “The Queen of Winter” which would have the Narnia-feel to it, without being Jadis?
The problem with having a new character is that it makes the whole thing feel like “The Queers are coming”. It makes the idea of the gay paring feel like something that doesn’t quite belong, it’s new, it’s not old OUAT, etc. whereas if you root it in an existing character it makes it feel more grounded somehow. having new characters come in as love interests does happen, as we’ve seen. But introducing a new couple of the show? It can be a harder sell sometimes. as much as I loved Ariel, ArielxEric wasn’t a ship people got behind or anything.
They need to root it in an existing character to make it feels like it belongs.
(That said I did like the idea of Glinda X Zelena too, and still hope it’s a possibility if she’s not truly dead somehow).
