It may have been painful for Neal but he could accept Emma moving on (The question is could Emma accept herself moving on. I you want to move on you can, if you don’t you won’t. People don’t have to die for you to learn to this and most likely people want die. They will live in this world just like you but I guess that’s another segment)
This is why I don’t understand why he had to die, because he would been content with his son, family, and friends. He would be able to stand because he knew he hurt Emma and would want her to see Emma happy even if it with the pseudo father figure who also was the great love and lover of his mother and offered him to the lost boys. Sure it would hurt but he could live with the hurt because he hurt Emma. Neal could bare this pain if the person who he wrong could be happy. Because he was remorseful and regretted his actions and wanted to make amends for his pasts misdeed.
