You know it would be kind of nice to know if the reason why Neal.Baelfire was killed off because MJR wanted to be out of the show. I have been reading a lot lately that people are insisting that MJR quit/wanted out of the show and that is the main reason why Neal/Baelfire was killed off.
I get the strong impression that Neal was meant to die at the end of season 2, and that they kept him on for season 3 because he turned out to be popular and good for ratings. When it seems that the producers are making changes because of pressure from focus groups, the story loses something of what made it matter in the first place. Neal’s death would have been a tragedy — in terms of drama, and in personal terms for his fans — in any case, but it would have been powerfully Shakespearean at the end of season 2, where it would have been a kind of “fulfilling his destiny” scene. Instead, in season 3 he got a “Well, we don’t know what else to do with him” ending, and that’s the real loss.
The problem with this is that he wasn’t. Neal was never popular. At all. He was compltely ignored by the media and hated/strongly disliked by a huge portion of the fanbase. The ratings have suffered every season, so he was not good for that.
I’m with RG. I don’t think GA cared about who Emma was dating. Her suitors, nor her love triangle didn’t do much to boost the ratings. Neal nor Hook is not a ratings grabs in my humble non-important bias opinion.
Season one was doing real good in the ratings department, S2 and S3 to me does not compare to the magic of Season 1, when the shows was mostly about story, family, and happy endings. And less about ships and love triangles..
I’m curious to see what the show would be like:
without Neal as Henry’s father and just be Bae (foster brother or former friend of Emma) or strangerNeal as father to Henry but he never left Emma but both was separated because both ended up in jail or some other reason. And just kept missing each other storyline.
or they had no rights to Hook or Peter Pan story
or if Emma remained single through-out the series. And the focus remained on family.
or If Tamara was good and that Neal and Emma had that moving on talk and making amends to each other yet still co parent Henry with Regina.
or Swanfire moved from friendship in season 4 to romance by season 5 with the series ending with them as true love
or Neal just you know DIDN’T DieOne thing though I was happy with MRJ as Neal, the actor never for once bother me nor Bae being the adult either so in all of those what ifs. Bae will still be Neal and Neal will still be portrayed by MRJ.
okay I’m somewhat lying, it would be interesting to see what it would be like if the actors were cross Colin as Neal and MRJ as Hook. I mean we all can say it doesn’t matter but we’ll never truly know because it never happened that way.

A part of me continues to hold on to the faith of “bold storytelling reasons”. That we haven’t truly seen the last of Nealfire and that WHEN he does return, it will be for a big juicy storyline that is being kept under major secrecy. However, as both woman and Scorpio, my intuition is two fold and strongly tells me there us more to the story of why we got so little Neal and his death.
MRJ has moved on though. I think we’ve seen the last of him for good on the show.
I don’t see why MRJ would come back after SonsOfLiberty he is going to have even more opportunities, why come back to the headache of media/fandom-shippers/abc executives-promos. He is free from the melodrama of it all. There is a reason we don’t see Sebbie and Jamie back on OUAT. This show hit its climax now its on decline to towards the series finale

to piggy back on what I said I found this gem. Dude if this had happen I could so get behind that.
Things that would have been better than killing Neal if A&E were determined to end up with CS:
Neal survives on account of there not being a weird confusing plot device which waits to kill him until an emotionally resonant moment.Zelena gets defeated blah de blah blah.
Neal and Emma sit down and have a sensible adult conversation with each other about their feelings.
Maybe they try dating again and they’re happy at first.
But then maybe it isn’t quite like they remember. Conversation doesn’t flow as smoothly as it did 12 years ago. There are more awkward silences. Cracks start to show. They don’t seem to fit together the same way.
Eventually they sit down and have another sensible adult conversation about how they still love each other, but maybe they’re still in love with the versions of each other that they used to know, and they just aren’t those people any more. 12 years is a long time, and they’ve both changed too much. And they’re both sad that it didn’t work out but sometimes life just doesn’t go the way we want, and there are no real hard feelings.
They stay really close friends since they still understand each other more than anyone else, and everything is more comfortable now that they’re not trying to go back to how things used to be. And Henry gets to have all three of his parents around.
That’s how I would have written it, anyway.
Henry doesn’t need a parents he needs a love interest with a love triangle. It can be Grace and Gretel, except Pinocchio is in love with Gretel and Hansel is in love with Henry, but Henry has a huge crush on Wendy Darling who secretly torn by her feelings for Tink. And right now Henry agreed to go with both Grace and Gretel to the Sadie Hawkins dance and is not sure how he will pull this off, but thanks to advice of his new step dad he can cheat to win, so he goes with both and has to conveniently switch dates back and forth and hopes doesn’t get caught. And in the middle of all this just as Henry is caught Elsa would interrupt the dance with a massive snow storm. But it all ends in a awesome musical dancer number….

I don’t think Neal was brought back to life because he was popular and good for the ratings. I don’t think either of Emma’s suitors boost ratings/viewership just look at season 1 to season 3. The writing quality in season 1 was superb because it was fresh and unique.
I think Neal was intended to live and find happiness with his son, family, and love ones. Baelfire was always suppose to be intricately be apart the of the OUAT story and I think they new very well what they wanted to do with him. If they continued with the Tamara and Greg story-line Nealfire would be intrinsically linked to helping Emma defeat his ex evil fiance and her traumatized boyfriend bith who was working for the HOME OFFICE, which meant they would need the assistance of the three that new the world the most, Neal, Emma, and August (which is where the love triangle was going to come to play originally or as rumors has it.)
Even in Neverland Neal should have more of intricate part and be highlighted more, he was a LOST BOY, grandson of Peter Pan, friend of Tink, brother of Wendy, and psuedo step son of Captain Hook. So there was a storyline there as well, because we should have had more Baelfire lost boy flashbacks in Neverland. And these are professional writers they should know what to do with a character that they flesh out for some years.
They knew what they wanted to do with them very much since season 1 and season 2, heck he was the season 2 opener for goodness sake. However the tides turn and they started writing less of him and more of another.
Now what it appears to be and I just guesstimating all of this; Is they wrote Neal son of Rumplestilstkin as to be the true love of Emma Swan, daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming and for them to both to parents of Henry Mills, adopted son of the Evil Queen. Three Original Characters who were living out their fairytale. Now when you spend some time writing a character as being the true love of another character yet realize that another love interest, that fun time in Vegas, is looking good in the media and they are hot with loads of “chemistry.” And the media is pushing it and the network is pushing it. So you go with that one because its hot and cool and hip. Its the pirate and princess, because who doesn’t love a sexy pirate in leather. Its the epic fantasy.
So you let go of the lost boy and the lost girl trying to overcome a life load of hurt, pain, obstacles to achieve greatness and to find love, home, and family. You let go of “how two people who love each over come the hurt.”
Of course now that tide has change and diverge and took a sharp left instead of right. Leaving you with this OC here. What do with him? Be a father to Henry, son to Rumple, support and friend to Emma, support and friend to various others, new love of another, or single & happy. But of course with him alive that would always be a conflict for some, there will always be wondering if it can work out, especially with that Ferris wheel scene, because Neal was right. And we really need to end this triangle and as long as Neal is alive the triangle will never be ended really. And there is Milha and other stuff that comes along with keeping Neal alive. And Emma really kind of still loves Neal. And we really need to push this ship without conflict so we can covert all to its epic timeless splendor. And half of fans/viewers would still prefer Swanfire. And so let’s just take the easy way out and kill his arse. And call it bold storytelling. They’ll buy it.
Like I said its just guesstimation on my behalf. And I wrote this all before having my first cup of coffee for my sleep deprived mind. So I may come back to this and go what the HECK DID I JUST WROTE. It happens. 😀

@Millie the thing is if MRJ quit there is no need to be secret about that. Meghan quit and she was very open about why, she had another bigger opportunity and A&E had no story for her any longer. She is not the only OUAT actor who went for meatier roles because they were getting toss the writing scraps. So I don’t understand why MRJ will have to lie about quitting. He is not the first actor to depart from role in the history of television and he won’t be the last. Unless he couldn’t say why he was quitting? Or if they asked him not to say he quit and rather say it was for story purposes and bold writing for what ever reason is they don’t want people to keep asking him why did you quit? And MRJ telling the truth, well here is the thing or this is what went down, or u know when A&E pitch this story to me or the media/fandom were…
I think there is way more to that story but I also believe MRJ, cast, and writers are not permitted to say. I do believe light would shed upon this eventually when the show is done and over with and buried in the sand. Now rather we like what we hear or even care by then is a whole another story.
