Something i’m curious about is when we think Snow figures out why Regina hates her so much. As FairyTalePrincess pointed out, Regina expresses multiple reasons why she wants to hurt Snow, but clearly the foundation of Regina’s hatred is Snow letting Regina’s secret about the Stable Boy slip to Regina’s mother.
The reason I’m so curious is because after Regina reacts to Snow telling Regina that she was the one who told her mother about the Stable Boy, Regina puts up that front saying it is okay, and it seems as though she has fooled Snow into thinking she isn’t angry at her. I can’t seem to figure out if Snow figures it out on her own as she matures or if there is a specific event that we will see in their backstory where Snow realizes that this is the root of Regina’s hatred.
I want more backstory because I was loving this episode and it drives me crazy that the mistake of a child would make someone turn totally evil and would make her want to kill this child her whole life (though it is debatable when Regina starts the process of wanting to kill Snow). There has to be more than just this and just thinking Snow is prettier than her.

I mean she had Graham’s heart because she tore it from the huntsman in FL – so are we assuming she did this to Kathryn’s FL counterpart so that Regina would have Katherine’s heart “on hand”? If the writers just do a dumb DNA testing accident route, i’m going to be disappointed.
Next, I see Katherine has roaming the woods. I think it is the type of deal that whenever someone tries to leave SB, something “magical” happens and they lose control/become disoriented. There has to be magic in SB – the place was created BY A CURSE. It is literally founded on magic. I really dont think anyone had anything to do with Kathryn’s disappearance. I think she tried to leave, was prevented by the magic of the curse, and ended up roaming around the forest till she found her way back. Regina just saw the scenario and decided she might as well take the opportunity to frame MM.
So magic in SB? Yes. But it is a unique, uncontrollable magic. Rumple isn’t going to be turning handsome men into roses anytime soon.
rapunzelParticipantI’m totally with you all on the fact that Regina is a victim and of course we can pity her. I mean Regina really has had to deal with a lot (evil mother, slaughtered lover, betrayal, unhappy marriage) and in the meantime she has to see the girl who aided in her lover’s death have the Happy Ending she always wanted. And this as just in FL. In SB she has no friends (she isn’t trying, but it is true, nonetheless), her son straight up hates her and sees her (rightfully) as the evil witch and he prefers his biological mother to her, and she has to live with all these memories from FL. Yes, Regina has been able to strain Snow/MM’s happiness (for now), but she is just as lonely and angry as ever. And what’s going to happen after her (possible) revenge against Snow/MM? That seems to be her purpose, so after she follows through with that, what is left?
My name is Rapunzel and I pity Regina (i’ll be honest though, i’m not saying this in a compassionate way. Imagine what Regina sounds like when she says “pity” and that’s how i feel.
rapunzelParticipantI’ll be honest I had no idea what Regina had against Snow in FL. I may just be dense but I was just so stuck on the fact that the Evil Queen in Snow White hates her because she’s the “fairest of them all”. Obviously in this show if you get stuck on original fairy tales, you are not going to guess anything. Brilliant.
So clearly this backstory was important so that the audience could see that Regina’s anger was human – it wasn’t just jealousy about beauty. It was anger for her indirectly taking away her love as well as getting the Happily Ever After that Regina always wanted, where she could be with her prince.
In my opinion, though, i do not think that Regina killed her mother. As we’ve seen in this episode, even when Regina turns completely cold, she is human. Her anger towards Snow is based in human anger, not just out of evilness (though she is 2000% evil). I think it is that innate human side that prevents Regina from actually killing her mother. She couldcertainly find a way of banishing her (hint: queen of hearts??) and I do not doubt that the powers she gains were taken from her mother (stripping her of what makes her “powerful,” for lack of a better word). She wants her mother to suffer the way she did. But i think it is something about this untouchable, innate bond the two share that prevents Regina from killing her.
This episode was absolutely vital for the series as a whole, and it was about time they showed it. I’m also so happy that they made it so you could understand why Regina hates Snow (misdirected and clearly illogical) but it doesn’t taint our feelings of how pure and wonderful snow is. Even as a child she meant no harm. In fact she loved Regina and actively wanted to help. Job Well Done. And lets see more of Regina’s mother, thanks.
