I don’t know if traditionally all captains have the same name. It was a Princess Bride thing that Dread Piate Roberts was handed down.
I don’t think Hook personally hates mermaids, but he has heard or experienced them as creatures to be wary of, just like people were afraid and hated werewolves. Now that I think about it, if Hook has met Ariel before he does not know she is a mermaid.

I think I’ve heard if it one other time, but I’m not sure where..

Do we know for sure that he hasnt met a mermaid?

Just to throw another theory out there, in some stories, doesn’t the captain of a ship always have the same name, once there is a new captain they are referred to as the old captains name (like the captain before them) so maybe Hook was Eric beforehand but since he had a different identity Adam is playing with words and trying to dupe us 🙂

Do we know how old Hook is when he became a pirate? Cuz if he was in his late teens then him and eric could have been part of the same crew, but he wouldn’t have been adopted. Then Eric dies (I’m thinking at the hands of mermaids) Hook takes over as captain. Ariel loses her first love and like hook is at the time is not ready for a relationship, but we get one in present day Neverland.

I like either version as long as we get Hookriel 🙂 Josephine’s right, I you can’t please everyone, if CaptainSwan happens you risk angering SwanFire fans, you just gotta go with what makes for the best story you want to tell. Personally I like CS, then to split off intseparate respective alternatives, but I’m biased by my love for Hookriel 🙂

The fact that we get Hook’s back story right before we meet Ariel somehow makes me hopeful, that Hook may still be Eric, and they are just casting for his younger self. However, I think that Ariel losing Eric would make for a great story and growing point, plus seething to bond with Hook about. I basically just don’t want Eric to be her happily after cuz I’d find that kinda boring, even though that’s my ultimate Disney favorite. What can I say, I ship Hookriel 🙂

I know I’m probably just being stubborn but I still think its entirely possible that eric will be hook when he was younger. Maybe thy won’t reveal it till later though for an awesome twist, taking everyone by surprise and after those of us who guessed had given up on the theory already

Exactly, don’t give up hope! There must be an awesome Hookriel explanation, I’ve seen plenty in fanfictions
