This reform CAN’T possibly last… can it?
There’s a really interesting theory I was talking about with @runaroundmacy and @ranishapitts about Missy’s reform. Basically, Missy is pre-Simm Master; she regenerates into him and the animosity SimmMaster feels for the Doctor is based on whatever happens these next two episodes.
I’ve been trying to rack my brain on whether or not Missy has said anything since she first appeared in S8 about her time as Simm but nothing comes to mind.

–I quite liked this one!
–Still not as good as Thin Ice IMO but a definite step up from last week, which is ironic given that the basic pitch is the same. Two warring sides, invaders vs natives, the Doctor and Bill sympathetic to the sides. But what made this episode better was that it felt so much more human. These are just kids trying to carry on the way the adults would have because the “Otherization” of the opposite side has been drilled into them. In the end, they can see that they’re the same. There are no hardened soldiers here, just scared children.
–This gives the Doctor a chance to play a different archetype than his hero or angry god one. His “father” role has been coming out more this year than others, largely because he acts like a father/grandfather/teacher to Bill (check out the look of pride on his face when he hears Bill explain the language auto translate to the Picts/Romans). I like this side of him. Slightly grumpy, exasperated, but also protective.
–With all that said, however, talk about an utterly bland monster!
–Remind me to use popcorn as an escape mechanism if ever I’m in trouble.
–The Doctor not only lived in Roman times but he also juggled and was a Vestal Virgin, second class.
–The conversation about Bill’s sexual orientation was hilarious. She’s the restrictive one, eh?
–Also, big props to the writer for letting Bill puzzle out the TARDIS language auto-translate on her own instead of having the Doctor explain it to her.
–“It’s called charm.” “I’m against that.”
–“I’ve been standing at at the gate of your world, keeping you all safe, since you crawled out of the slime. I’m not stopping now.” Ah, there’s my mythic hero.
–Okay, poignant and sweet as the episode was, the crow “Kar/Caw” thing was eye roll inducing. There’s a line, Doctor Who, between heartfelt and sickly sweet.
–Sooooo. Missy. Guys, I’m conflicted. I mean, giving Michelle Gomez something new to do is welcome and she’s doing slightly repentant but still cheeky Master/Mistress really well, as well as she did “look at me I’m totally bananas” Master/Mistress. But her redemption is lightening fast because there’s no time devoted to it outside of a few snippets here and there.
