Rumple was always used as a back up villain for when the arc villain got defeated or to support the arc villain because they weren’t “enough” on their own. I expect Rumple to be used in a similar fashion in season 7 (the writers just need to leave RumBelle alone).

    Quote

But does’t that beg the question can you leave Rumbelle alone and have Rumple fulfill his main role which is to fill in as a villain when the arc villain isn’t enough? Even if Belle’s not there just the idea that Rumple is gonna black hat it up in S7 would put quite a damper on Rumbelle, no?

I’m a wee bit behind but some passing thoughts on 1×05 “Faithful”

–I really enjoyed the show exploring more of the dynamics between different sets of women, particularly the pairing of Serena Jo/Offred and Commander Steven’s Wife/OfSteven. Both Wives are claiming to help out the Handmaid’s but there’s a very different feel to these interactions. Serena’s motivation is still about a child and what that child will mean for her and Fred. The other Wife comes from seemingly a place of compassion. The show uses visuals like touch to highlight differences, like Serena dragging Offred to Luke and the other Wife gently touching OfSteven’s shoulder. (Of course I’ll note here that it’s also a warped sense of compassion because the Wife can’t do anything about Emily’s captivity and withholding the rape for this month does nothing about the rapes in the future months)

–Along with that dynamic we have Offred/OfGlen and Offred/OfSteven. It’s hard to wrap your head around someone being happy with this current situation but OfGlen seems fairly content because her former life–the one being highly romanticized by Offred in her flashbacks (holy lens flairs, batman)–was not the bright and sunny one June had. What’s institutionalized rape when you’re used to selling your body to live anyway, right? At least the Ceremony is only once a month and in between you get a warm bed, food, and a roof over your head. It’s hard to stomach because of course I don’t want to think that anyone would ever be okay with this type of life but then again I live a life of relative privilege. I’ve never not had a roof, I’ve never not had enough to eat, and my body has never been a commodity. Women like June and Emily are fighting very hard for the life they once had, but women like OfGlen are fighting to keep this life they have now. I still wonder where to put Serena Joy–she’s benefiting from the current situation but she’s not entirely pleased either and she too has her moments of rebellion, like trying to be intimate with Fred and taking Offred to Nick.

–Speaking of: Nick and June’s first sexual encounter is about as cold and horrible as it can be. Obviously that’s the point but I think in June’s head this is the first time she might actually use the word rape. She distances herself from what’s going on with the Commander once a month; she doesn’t trust him, she doesn’t care for him. But Nick has seen another side of Offred–he’s actually seen June. The time she screamed, her coy smiles, the flash of her knee when no one was looking. So for Nick to play lover like that and then turn around and use her body for a different end must feel like a violation on a different scale. I think that scene was harder to watch than the first time I saw the Ceremony.

–On the other hand, the second sexual encounter was hot. It’s not meant to titillate but it’s meant to arouse strong feelings. This is June’s biggest rebellion, not just sex but deciding when she gets to have it, with whom, and under what circumstances. It’s not cold and a chore, but it’s really sexy, fully unclothed, her on top, clearly achieving orgasm. I thought it was really well shot. I think the director has done some work for Outlander, which helps explain the beauty of the scene.

–Is it wrong that I cheered when Emily drove over that Eye?

–“I heard there was a bit of a commotion in the marketplace.” “…a bit.” Elisabeth Moss giving a straight up Peggy Olsen delivery on this snarky line.

–I continue to think that the Commander is really just looking out for himself and not really interested in any sort of genuine compassion for anyone else. He even talks about compassion in regards to Emily saying that what they did to her was compassionate because, hey!, they could have just straight up murdered her. That’s not how compassion works and if someone thinks they are merciful and compassionate because they chose the “lesser” of two evils to inflict on another person…I dunno. That’s some warped sense of self identity right there.

–“Better never means better for everyone. It always means worse, for some”

Hoping to get to episode 6 later this week!

    3×18 “Light The Wick”

    Ehhhhhhh……..

GENERAL: Gotham needs to cut its loose and uninteresting ends like Barnes and the CoO. Honestly, if this show just became the Penguin and Riddler Show I don’t think many people would complain. Jim and Baby!Batman can flit in and out but the real fun and meat of this story rests with the two villains.

    LIKED

    –Bring back Tetch full time!

–Going with my general comment above, the dynamic between Jim and Penguin is interesting and I don’t mind moments like this when the “good guy” gets drawn in by compelling villain because of their shared history. Penguin and Jim have been in each other’s orbit for awhile and getting to play that out is usually rewarding.

–Oh thank god. Please tell me next week is a return of Penguin and Nygma.

    MIXED

–“You’ve done it. You’ve weaponized the virus.” Yes, I can see that Gotham. Stop actually telling me what I can see! However, this opens the doors for a few cool storylines and I hope they follow through.

–I almost cannot roll my eyes hard enough at the Baby!Batman and horribly cliche Zen Master. Tonight we took a walk down the familiar path of venturing into the hazy past, having some sort of symbolic token that represents everything standing in the protagonists way, and a teacher spouting something foreboding and secretive out of earshot. Honestly, “I’ve been waiting for this a long time, Bruce. Together we will make Gotham pay” is all manner of silly with the reveal that the Zen Master is actually part of the CoO. Like, of course. Of course.

    DISLIKED

–We desperately need some backstory on the individuals inside the CoO. I get that they as a collective whole want to “cleanse” Gotham but what’s in it for each person? How did they get into the CoO? What do they personally have to gain from all this?

–“This isn’t about Mario!” Yes, yes it is Lee. Your entire story for a year now has been about Mario and Jim and has turned you into a hysterical crazy woman. If the show were building to turning Lee into a comic book character, that’s one thing because that’s an okay origin story. But I get the feeling the writers are just biding their time with Lee until the actress leaves (is she leaving? Did her show get picked up?)

–Good lord. Of course there’s a crying child on the bank floor that Jim has to get to safety before he can reach the bomb in time.

–How did Ivy get all those huge plants into the hospital room? No nurse would allow that.

–I almost feel bad for Ivy that both of her rescued friends–Penguin and Baby!Catwoman–wake up and want nothing to do with her, preferring instead to go on a murder spree.

I know Sneaky Blue is likely never going to happen, but it was strange Tiger Lily, who apparently became a fairy again, interacted with Lucy.

Yes how on earth did that happen? Did she too wave a wand and say some gibberish? Actually now that you point this out, I half wonder if Sara Tomko will become a regular.

If ABC are perfectly fine with it airing on Fridays, I can’t help but wonder exactly how much of a budget cut the show has been given. Surely they wouldn’t put a show as expensive as ONCE used to cost in that slot on that night. Yikes.

Once Upon a Time” stars Lana Parrilla as the Evil Queen/Regina, Colin O’Donoghue as Hook, Andrew J. West as Henry, Alison Fernandez as Lucy and Robert Carlyle as Rumplestiltskin/Mr. Gold

Suspect this list will grow once they cast Lucy’s mom.

At the end of this story, because this is the end, it’s became incredibly clear that

    1) The writers never knew what they wanted to do with Rumbelle or Belle

    2) The writers like Dark!Rumple more than AttemptAtRedemption!Rumple

They rushed through it for both reasons. If the shippers are happy that they got a HEA, then great! But I think looking back the story is more than just flawed…it’s bad.

You know, actually, putting it on a new night, with a reboot of a show where new viewers can tune in and not feel lost, actually could help the show. It won’t save it but sunday nights were tough for tv, especially with football season.

    Quote

It will not help the show. Nobody watches TV on Friday nights. They’re out doing anything else. Date night, movie night, etc.

    Quote

It does, however, mean that the “low” for the show is now even lower. Friday’s are graded differently. Suddenly a .8 is decent.
