Keymaster–Breathe, Hook. Let Blue wake up a bit
–Hey the cuff.
–The center of SB? Is that the well?

KeymasterI have a theory what if Rumple is the Black Fairy down fall and that is the reason she have gave him up
I think that’s a good guess. We know how much the show likes their parallels; Rumple tried to hurt Henry because of a prophecy so what if the Black Fairy heard something about her son being her undoing and took similar action.

KeymasterThere was a comment on a review I read for the third episode (the most disquieting one yet) that I’d like to post here for discussion and/or for anyone interested in watching the Handmaid’s Tale but still on the fence. It also speaks to the hesitant feelings I think @gaultheria is mentioning above in regards to the Woobie feeling of the movie vs the show.
Amazing episode. Not in the colloquial sense of the word, which, like “awesome,” has been watered down to the point of insipidity. “Amazing” in the sense that it creates a sense of being lost in something beyond one’s ability to completely comprehend. Being amazed isn’t an enjoyable experience–it’s overwhelming past the point of rational, objective response. This is not going to be an enjoyable show, and thank God, really.” — HRH Lifeless Husk
I agree a lot with this comment. I haven’t been able to get Alexis Bledel’s performance in the final few seconds of the third episode out of my head.

KeymasterRotten Tomatoes pretty much places the movie and the series at opposite ends of the spectrum, but I’m still scared to give the series a try. The movie went so far overboard with Woobieness that it became more like a self-parody than serious, thoughtful drama.
I’ve seen both; I’d say the TV series is waaaaaay better than the movie.

KeymasterIf the show had taken the domestic abuse story route with CS, do you think that would’ve been an empowering storyline eg showing that even a “strong” woman can be a victim of domestic abuse, or do you think it would’ve made Emma look “weak” because she was previously a “strong” character but is now “allowing” herself to be dominated by Hook?
I think this depends on what the outcome is. I would like to think that if A and E did an in your face all out domestic abuse stroryline they wouldn’t have CS be end game which would be a nice way to have Emma fight not only literal Big Bads but also fight the big bad of the patriarchy and abuse to take back her story, to fight for her right to exist as a person and not an object.

KeymasterReally, the dream realm again?
Okay, that’s Emma Swan.
Rumple as a devoted father is my favorite version of Rumple.

KeymasterEmma just seemed to have a bit of colour in her cheeks and looked healthier than she has in previous episode. Her hair styles were normal Emma.
Her hair style was more normal Emma but I don’t know if I agree about her makeup choices. She has a continuously tired look about her, like Emma needs three nights of sleep. Her eyes are heavy and her makeup, instead of being nonexistent, came across to me as soft to the point of worn out and lifeless. Like she’s trying to cover something up and failing–much like what her clothing would signal to the audience if this were a domestic abuse story.
And thanks for the birthday wishes!

KeymasterI literally decided signed up for Hulu to watch it (well, ok, and because Lucifer). I have the same relationship to the book as your describe. Won’t get to it until the week-end, but if you decide to create a thread for discussion, I’ll jump on board.
Done!
(did I know you were a Lucifer fan?) (ps: American Gods this weekend. You’re watching, right?!)

General: Mostly, I thought this was a pretty decent episode. I liked all the religious/false religion overtones with Clarke’s storyline–is Clarke a false savior or does it just depend on where you’re standing? The Raven bits were also good and emotional. However, please put Jasper and his crew out of their misery already. Their plot is dragging on far too long.
–“Congrats, you get to live in a hole in the ground for 5 years. Thanks for playing.” Sassy Raven is my favorite kind of Raven. This episode put Raven to really good use and while it’s hard to see her go, I thought her send off was wonderfully executed (provided they don’t undo it all next week) There’s a really nice contrast between Raven and what’s going on with Jasper and his gang; both groups are really sick of of fighting to live but Raven’s choice makes more sense–she’s at death’s door anyway with her brain problems. Jasper and his crew actually have a good chance if they would get over their angst and help Clarke and the rest of Skaikru.
–Raven has the foresight to get to a gurney and lay down moments before she begins to seize.
–Can I just say how much I like the language of Trigedasleng? And specifically how you can almost tell what they are saying without reading the words on the screen because of the way the language is constructed out of heavily accented slang?
–Still not on board with Octavia and Illian. Still think this storyline is a pretty poor one for all the reasons I said up thread and if the bloodbath we witnessed is any indication, sex with Illian was just another way to cover up her pain.
–Harper switched to Jasper’s side because….? Good to see Bellamy came to his senses, though.
–“Make me the Commander.” So that was a pretty nice subversion of where I thought this was going, not that I was going to complain about Clarke being the new Commander. Maybe the show is just delaying the (seemingly) inevitable but having the clans (who view Nightbloods in a mystical and mythological sense) deny Clarke the role of Commander makes sense because Clarke didn’t come by it naturally. “There’s nothing sacred about any of this.”
–So this is the Hunger Games, yeah? Who all is going to fight? Octavia is a shoe-in given her 11th hour arrival.

KeymasterMany CS fans aren’t keen to dive into subtext, so favourable text is all they need to be happy. SF, SQ and anti-CS fans generally pay a lot more attention to subtext and meta, because the text isn’t kind to them. So they’re stringing them along with some ambiguous signals, hoping it’ll keep them interested and hopeful enough to continue watching. It’s an old trick that’s been used in queerbaiting since the dawn of time.
That makes a lot of sense, actually.
And thanks for the Bday wishes!
On a slightly different note–though perhaps not a wildly different one given how much we discuss feminist critique in here–anyone else watching the Handmaid’s Tale? I read the book eons ago and it’s one of those books that probably shaped me more than I realize. I just finished the first three episodes and wow.
