KeymasterThe wardrobe plot device was a little forced – how did August carve it so fast?
The Author’s quill works like that: draw it quickly across blank paper while holding a picture of the finished work clear in your mind, and text appears on the paper.
Mmmm. But the Quill itself if magical (and apparently contains a soul) and needs a special and specific person to wield it. The tree that turns into the wardrobe is magic but neither August nor the chisel are magical like Henry and the Quill. Even if August super believes in himself that still doesn’t change the fact that the chisel is just a chisel.

KeymasterEven if OUAT does end soon, that doesn’t necessarily mean the franchise as a whole is dead
It’s also worth pointing out that no franchise ever really ends. Fan fic, fan art, cons, ect continue even when the show is done.

KeymasterSomething worth considering is how much money OUAT possibly makes for the network via other avenues. Look at all of the merchandise the show currently has, for example. No other ABC show really has merchandise behind it, aside from maybe DVDs. I’m not sure if it’s enough to help save the show, but I don’t think it’s irrelevant.
I also don’t think it’s irrelevant to point out that Disney has some stakes here, some skin in the game, if you will.

KeymasterWatching last nights episode I almost felt as if Adam and Eddy were speaking directly to us. Asking for help. I couldn’t help but feel that Emma is almost a metaphor for the show itself at the moment, and the sad thing is that we have all accepted it’s fate rather than attempting to fight it.
This is a nice sentiment and all but here’s my take: all shows get cancelled. It’s the nature of the beast and if that sounds overly harsh then here’s a slightly more positive spin–all stories have an ending.
I get that maybe people don’t want to see their favorite/former favorite show go off air and it’s hard to say goodbye but at its core OUAT has always been about Emma Swan’s hero’s journey. She’s come full circle–orphan, friendless, hopeless to having friends, family, and a destiny. She’s become self-actualized with a sense of worth and importance. The story is over. I’d rather see it end on a high, acknowledging that “the end” is how fairy tales end, than to see the show try to torture itself for another year, grasping at a narrative that is past making sense potentially with characters who don’t mean anything to an audience.
Yeah, Adam and Eddy are losing their show but that’s how TV works. They’ll be back. They’ll come up with another idea–during OUAT’s tenure they’ve actually done TWO other shows! That’s what writers do. Damon Lindeloff moved on to the Leftovers. Carlton Cuse moved on Bates Motel. Joss Whedon moved on to Dollhouse and the Marvel Universe.
It’s not about losing hope or that we aren’t fighting hard enough. It’s time, that’s all.

KeymasterI finally managed to sit down and watch the finale.
That was….crazy. It’s a real shame there isn’t going to be a season 2 because now that the major political stuff is over, I think the show could delve into the mythology it presented with the Beast Forever because those last few moments of him flying over the city were creepy and weird and fascinating.
Overall I liked the show well enough toward the end that I would watch another season, especially because the story of who Dorothy is and why she’s important only really just began. There are still so many things we don’t know and so many iconic Oz moments we haven’t seen (so Dorothy won’t be killing West??)
Shame we won’t be getting another season.

KeymasterLow but steady? If you get rid of any of our main characters there specific fanbases will be leaving with them.
Yes, low but steady. For example, we did not fall in between 6A and 6B. We actually rose from 5B to 6A. Over the course of 6A we only lost .4 in the demo (not great, but not tragic).
Like the Grim Reaper said, it’s still the highest rated non-TGIT show. That does count for something. You’re looking at this through a fan lens–if X character leave, the fan base leaves. But not all viewers are part of a fan base, and not all fans are tied to one specific character or ship. ABC has a history of not looking at fanbases. Again, I cite Castle as an example. You can also think about Grey’s Anatomy killing off Derek (because Dempsey wanted off the show, much like some of our cast on OUAT potentially) and ending MerDer, the most popular ship on the show, the basis for a lot of the show, and the reason Grey’s was such a monster smash hit for so long…and it’s still doing just fine.
You need to look at the whole ABC board, not just this show and this fanbase. ABC can, in theory, cancel everything. But they have to have stuff in their back pocket to replace all that with. Already they’ve lost two new dramas (Notorious and Conviction), probably losing 2 two season dramas (Secrets and Lies and Quantico), probably losing another new drama at the end of its run (Time After Time), and possibly losing a show that’s 4 seasons long (Agents of Shield). The only “hit” they’ve had this year was Designated Survivor and that’s not doing gangbusters.
I also think you’re underestimating the power of curiosity. In another thread I asked who would stick around if a majority of the cast left. Most of the responses were “I’ve been with it this long, I’ll stay if only just to see how it plays out.” Sure, there are some who would never come back (ABC can look to Sleepy Hollow to see how losing a major characters hurt that show) but there are those who would stick around to see how it plays out, again because they aren’t tied to a specific fan base or character and are more invested in the overall story.
I also think it needs to be stressed that only ABC, A and E, and the actors know who actually wants off. What we have is speculation. It could be that it’s only one or two actors or even none at all if A and E can pitch them something worthy of their time and talent.
Now, with all that said, I think they should absolutely end it at the end of this year. I think torturing it for another year is nonsense. I think A and E are a bit naive if they think people will be as enthusiastic for a show that has a whole new cast. But this is a business and ABC needs to keep the lights on. They renewed TGIT, probably will renew most of their Wednesday comedies, but that still leaves Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday to deal with.

KeymasterI think what complicates OUAT’s situation is the actors contracts. If this was say S5 it would absolutely get a full and final season to wrap it up. But the fact that we’re dealing with actor contracts complicates things a lot.
Agreed. But I think ABC has two options:
1) Cancel OUAT, letting all the actors out of their contracts, and try to totally over haul Sunday night with all new dramas.
2) Renew OUAT with mostly new cast members thereby keeping a low but steady show on Sunday night while they try to rebuild the rest of the week.
The contracts are a big deal, but if ABC believes it can get a fair amount of money from ad buyers for one more season (even an abbreviated one) so that it has one more year to try and save the smoking ruin that is their network, they might just do it. A and E are obviously keen to do another year, actors or not.

KeymasterIn other news, the newest ABC drama “Time After Time” is totally dead on arrival. It’s two hour series premiere got a .7/.6
Some thoughts from the Reaper:
Except for Thursday, ABC dramas are a smoking ruin.#OUAT still the highest rated non-Thu drama.
Not sure if that’s enough to save it.— TV Grim Reaper (@TVGrimReaper) March 6, 2017
The reaper has adjusted his renewal prediction for #OUAT down to 50%.https://t.co/2uJBKM5DKW
