It can be a little discouraging reading all those negative comments sometime. For me, when I read the negative comments, I can sometime feel kind of deflated.. and sometimes ..with the little things, it looks kind of nitpicky, especially if it is written and not accompanied ever by something positive.

I absolutely understand this. I come from a lot of fandoms; I know how it feels to be uber into something and have other people be…not. However, I would like to point out that the opposite is equally true. To feel negatively and be told to just sit back and enjoy/ it’s just a TV show/ it’s the writers story/ or at worse to get over what I feel is bad narrative is equally annoying (for wont of a better word). Not that anyone here is actually telling me those things but it does happen in this fandom, if not a lot here. Everyone wants their opinions to be validated by others and whether your pro or anti it can rub you the wrong way when you have to deal with the opposite side.

There’s just…no solution. We’ve tried a various methods around here (the long timers will remember Love Day or Critical Analysis Threads back in S4). But the longer we go on the more it becomes clear that we’re fighting a bit of a lost battle. The only solution is to accept that some people aren’t happy and some people are and we just need to try to be civil in our discourses (which, thankfully, we mostly are).

Anyone wanna place a bet: original songs or Disney songs?

For those of us really interested in ratings across the whole ABC board: a reminder that Quantico–a show @MatthewPaul and I both have pegged as cancelled–begins tonight on its new night. The ratings should prove interesting; it’s an attempt to save it, but it’s going into a spot that isn’t going to really help it any if past precedent means anything. The Winter Finale got a .7 in the demo.

Hmm. I take your point, @thedarkonedearie so I’m going to try and answer using just myself though I don’t think I’m someone who posts *just* negativity. I’m critical, to be sure!, but I think it’s more in a didactic manner.

Are there still things I like about the show? Sure, I guess. But I think the issue is that those things are so small and so few and far between that it’s super hard to generate a conversation about those things. For example, it might just be a funny line or a good costume; it could even be an episode that doesn’t leave me either bored or angry (6A’s Heartless comes to mind) but moments or episodes like this don’t exactly cause the kinds of conversation that the more negative aspects do. And at this point, like @sciencevsmagic said above, I get more out of the conversation we have about those negative aspects than I do about anything positive because conversations about the latter are so unfulfilling.

I think my question back to you, @thedarkonedearie is : what kind of answer are you looking for? Are you waiting for those who do talk in mostly negatives to admit “yeah, I still like some things” so it’s a sort of “gotcha!” moment? I mean, I think everyone here can point to one thing that they still like or are invested in. @WickedRegal is still heavily invested in Regina; @hjbau is still invested in Emma or likes Emma as a character or at least hopes for better for her. I’m still interested in any sort of mythology the show wants to try and play with along with seeing if A and E can course correct some of their more disastrous cultural and social themes. I know you don’t expect everyone here to be all sunshine and rainbows–and you’ve been critical about some things in the past as well–but, again, I’m just wondering what sort of answer you expect to the questions you pose and more broadly what sort of conversations are you expecting to have?

But I just can’t think of a good reason why people would be breaking out into song all of a sudden unless there was some sort of curse but no one really wants to see another one of those.

Right; they first major hurdle here is that the reason for the sudden sing-a-long needs to make sense in the show (the actual universe of the show–meaning the reason can’t just be “ratings!” or “Well, it’s Disney after all!”). And given that our current main antagonists are the Black Fairy (too loosely defined right now so no idea if there’s a singing connection), Gideon (same as the Fairy), the Evil Queen (who’s currently experiencing a bout of reptile-itis); and possibly Jafar
(who has given no indication that he’s prone to make people burst into song) then I’m left with “Random Big Bad comes to town and everyone starts to sing cause reasons.” Which is….eh.

If they’re wrapping up Bobby I imagine Emilie as well. I believe JMO is gonna be a lock for S7.

JMo, Colin and Lana are the only locks I’ve got. My first thought after Bobby was Bex, actually. She’s been given little to do this year and they seem to be struggling with what to do with Zelena now that she and Regina have made nice.

Another reason it would make sense to do one now rather than wait for a potential Season 7 is due to the recent speculation that major cast members will be leaving by the end of the Season once their contracts are up.

Interesting. I was sorta doubting Bobby would sing (he seems like he’s against the idea whenever it’s brought up) and he’s the only one I’ve got pegged as leaving for sure. Makes me wonder who else might be jumping ship….

ETA: this might explain why A and E did not write the middle episode of 6B like they normally do, instead just coming up with the story and having someone else pen it.

Adding some parodic ballads would be a much welcomed reprieve from the heavy drama of this show and its fandom.

I could be down with that. Some of more successful episodes in the past few years have been the ones that go full on campy, i.e: Shattered Sight, Operation Mongoose pt 1.

Another reason for the success of the Buffy musical was that the characters and their problems and relationships still mattered so much to the audience. I get the impression that even hardcore fans of OUAT are watching the show now at best just for the sake of completeness.

I think that’s a pretty fair point. Buffy’s musical numbers resonated so much because they were all about those relationships and problems you pointed out. The music fit everything about the show, not just a spur-of-the-moment-musical. And I also think you’re right about the hardcore fans of OUAT; even if they aren’t watching for just completeness, a lot of them are watching just for one or two characters, never mind the rest.

Oh one more thing: this article says that the author has only heard rumblings of a musical episode; A and E are silent on the matter and the only quotes in the article on the matter were pulled from a few years ago.

Now Matt M is a pretty credible source so if he says he has heard something then I absolutely believe that he’s heard something but we should take it with a grain of salt until we get something from A and E.
