which would mean Gotham returning in late April.

ARG!!!!! That’s torture. (wow, I’m saying this about Gotham)

They’ll probably go and break my heart in January and then I’ll have to wait for resolution until April.

(also, my god that’s an odd schedule)

I’m actually wondering if this stuff is more disquieting to me as an adult because I now understand why these plots, stories, actions should rub me the wrong way— if I was, say, 10 instead of 30 I don’t know that I’d get the implications of Arthur’s roofie on Gwen. But that’s @nevermore whole point about how and why OUAT is PG–proceed with caution if you have young children, you may have to explain some things.

There’s a really great analysis I once read that OUAT is more concerned with redemption as opposed to justice. It’s why a lot of the misdeed the villains have done get largely ignored after the fact. It’s why none of the villains had to face their victims in the Underworld but instead had their hero status/reformed status reemphasized (except Rumple of course). It’s why no one talks about what Zelena did to Robin or what Regina did to Graham or Hook’s collection of kills. Bringing these up would remind the audience that the villains have done terrible (really, terrible) things but instead the show wants us to see them as redeemed even if they haven’t had to face any sort of cosmic justice.

Again, if you believe justice and redemption are mutually exclusive or must work together will depend on your world perspective.

Henry is not 16. It had been four season not four years in universe. It had only been about 2-2.5; Adam and Eddy have confirmed this several times starting with the Frozen arc, hence why the gang knew nothing of the Arrendale crew. Henry is probably 14 at this point but he’s not 16.

ETA: the above was just to clarify. Im not making any moral judgements about Henry and Violet’s romance with regards to their age.

As far as “the villains didn’t get anything good from their actions” it doesn’t scan for all the villains. There is a difference between getting something good and avoiding punishment. Multiple times on this show murders and rapes, to name a few actions, have been hand waved away, forgotten, ignored, or flat out whitewashed by the writers. The moral may not be “bad actions yield good consequences” but that “bad actions yield no consequences”

It’s up to each individual if that moral is okay.

    3×07 Thoughts!

GENERAL: It’s so strange for me to be legit excited about sitting down to watch Gotham. This is a show I almost gave up on multiple times and this year I find myself looking forward to it. Overall, I really liked this episode. The entire Mad Hatter arc has been solid from start to this (maybe) finish. The show sometimes takes itself too seriously–pretty much anytime it has Gordon wrestle with his morals about protecting Gotham vs being a good man–and that gets tedious. I like this zany, almost animated feel even while they hit those same beats about Jim and his inner demons.

    LIKED

–“You get a girl shot and you don’t even bring her booze.”

–Glad to see that we were right about why Jim said “kill Lee.” Poor Mulan, though. Someday that girl is going to find a happy ending!

–“You have exquisite femurs.” Oh Ed. Such a romantic.

–Robin Lord Taylor delivers the “I make it a policy to not gossip about staff but…* line perfectly.

–Oswlad freaking out over Ed being gone for 12 hours followed by a giant hug. Guys, Nygmobblepot makes my insides cry tears of joy. (only be dashed and killed moments later by Ed not seeing straight thanks to Isabella).

–“…and the lights ON.” LOL Alfred

–“We all know fun isn’t your forte” Truer words about Jim Gordon have never been spoken. There’s probably a lot to analyze in Jim’s visions but I think the main takeaway keeps with what we’ve always known–Jim wants to be a hero, a good man, but finds it hard to do such without bodies piling up around him and the guilt that comes along with that knowledge.

–The entire conversation between Jim and his dad in the car was ABSOLUTELY foreshadowing to all of Batman. I like when the show goes that route and has those moments happen to characters other than Baby!Batman.

    MIXED

–I often complain that the show doesn’t know what to do with Harvey but having him call out Jim for being a cop without wearing a badge was great. If the show could start incorporating him more that would be welcome since Donal Logue does such a fantastic job with the very limited role.

–Barbara being so prevalent in Jim’s visions makes me wonder where the show is going with these two.

    DISLIKED

–Bye bye Mulan? Sad. I’d have liked her to stick around a bit longer.

–We interrupt our trip to Jim’s subconscious to bring you Baby!Date. As per usual, when the show shifts to Baby!Batman and Baby!Catwoman I lose a bit of interest. (Okay, a lot of interest)

–I really dislike Isabella and not just for Nygmobblepot reasons (ok, a lot of my reasons are Nygmobblepot) but there’s something so…off about her. She’s either a CoO plant or one of Strange’s monsters.

But just to be clear, can someone please explain to me the mechanism of the shears, as it’s been stated? As I understand it, if saviorness, but also other, more mundane aspects of one’s life are predetermined to some extent (what we might call fate), the shears “hack” the system, producing more opportunities for free will

We’ve only ever seen it used on a Savior the result of which was twofold: Aladdin escaped the death he saw in a vision and he lost his “Savior” magic. As neither Rumple nor Belle have those two aspects–Rumple is basically immortal unless someone gets the dagger and neither one use Savior magic–it’s really hard to see how anyone could use the shears on themselves.

I mean, what system would the shears “hack?” Rumple wasn’t fated to be the Dark One (unless S6 suddenly drops that idea into the narrative) and it’s never been established that True Loves are simply fated to be together; there’s always a human machination component–be it a vague “war” (Rumbelle) that brings them together OR something more tangible like Rumple himself manipulating the scenario (Snowing) or something that’s a mix of the two like a Dark Curse, a little bit of fate and consequence of past human actions (SwanFire). And even if we take Pixie Dust to mean “fated” (OutlawQueen) it was still up to Regina to go after true love, something she denied herself back in the EF, pre-Dark Curse!

So even if the shears can be used on non-Saviors, what the heck does it even do when nothing on this show is simply “fated” end of story.

So I’ve a theory….. Okay, so lets assume Rump does intend to cut Belle’s destiny. What if–like with cleaving the darkness from the dark one or with trying to get rid of fear with the night root plant thing–when a person’s destiny is cut, it manifests in the physical world? Perhaps that is why a grownup Morfetus is the one under the hood. He is Belle’s destiny literally cut away from her. Okay, it doesn’t make a lot of sense. It’s crazy. But you guys can see what I kind of mean right?

    Quote

Hmm. I have a lot of conflicting feelings about that.

–On the one hand, it does seem like something the show would do

–On the other, it suggests that Belle’s only destiny is to give birth which makes my skin crawl. But it’s in keeping with how this show views women in general.

–On the one hand it still doesn’t make a lick of sense that Morfetus is under that hood no matter what plot device comes into play

–On the other, does sense even matter anymore?

Anyway, I wonder if Zelena’s infuationwith Rumpel is whats going to drive a wedge between her and the EQ.

Please, no. Let’s not have the thing that divides two women be a man. Let it be that Zelena realizes she wants to be good and not wicked and that she can have a sisterly relationship with Regina.

I’m in camp “he meant himself” Perhaps he’s come to believe he’s cursed to keep pushing away those he loves, and sees this as an escape route. I wonder what the price is.

It’s just funny I didn’t even notice it.

And this might speak to the broader topic of this thread: the desensitization of amorality in our daily media consumption. Might be why TV shows feel the need to go above and beyond in shock value, because we’re so used to “mundane” amorality like adultery or swearing or even murder. Like I said above, the show has been labeled family friendly and family oriented since S1 but the entire premise of the show in S1–a Curse that took your favorite fairy tale characters to our world–is based on patricide and black magic. None of us eve blinked when Regina killed her father and sacrificed his heart in a fire; there was no outrage about the morality of it, instead we called it clever and a good twist.
