Keymaster“Once Upon a Time” is pretty dark. I mean, I’ve died three times — four times? We do rip out hearts from living people, so I don’t think that’s terribly dark. That’s a good one.
This made me laugh for possibly all the wrong reasons. Glad the actors recognize both the silliness of certain plots and the bleak approach that often covers most of the narrative.

KeymasterShould we assune the Count has magic? Given that he seems to have magically disappeared.
I don’t know. Wouldn’t Henry have noticed a giant POOF of smoke? Unless the Count can literally vanish on the spot.

KeymasterOk, there is a weird element with regards to Belle–did any of them even know Belle had put herself under a sleeping curse? Or that Rumple had lost her box? And yeah, they did run out of the Underworld without anyone stopping to ask “hey, wait. What about Belle?”
Emma’s like all “I don’t want her there but I can’t say that to her face so I’m going to make up a lame excuse”.
I don’t know if it’s a lame excuse or if it’s that Emma doesn’t want to give voice (to anyone who might be listening) to seeking help from a professional shrink (which says quite a lot about the appalling mental health attitudes in our country which is why I’m glad that Hook is actually encouraging Emma and not going on the defensive about her getting help from someone who isn’t him, which is what I expected).

KeymasterPlease have Snow say something like, “Emma, gurl, I was battling malevolent, revengeful characters long before you were born. I am Snow White and I have a bow—I got this.”
Charming can just follow behind, like he does

Keymaster“Every year I always remind our fans that he warned us in ‘Skin Deep’ he was a difficult man to love,” Kitsis says. “Every year people fall for him. When he reminds you of that, they get upset. This year will be no different.”
Yeah, but here’s the thing. You never actually let them have a break or make any kind of significant long lasting development. Like with Emma, you seem to be stuck in a pattern of writing that isn’t serving your characters or your narrative anymore. It’s nothing but push/pull with these two these days. It’s like there’s no light at the end of the tunnel because you refuse to evolve Rumple to his next obvious stage (redemption and no longer the Dark One–and even that one time you did, you undid by arc end!) Your pattern to writing some of these once complicated and vibrant characters is to reset them every season so that they’re undergoing the same issues just with different plot points. The lyrics change but the songs remain the same, in other words. People fall for Rumple because 1) you proved to us during S1-3A that he was a nuanced, complex character with extraordinary ability for love, self destruction, and selfish myopic gain all in one tiny scaly body and 2) every year you edge him a little bit closer to the tipping point of true character evolution only to dash it against the wall and have him return to sum zero because you find the concept of a good, trying to redeem himself, humble, heroic Rumple either confusing, baffling, impossible, boring or any combination thereof!
Stop blaming your audience.

Keymasterbut it is based on the Disney theme park mythology.
Huh. Well that would feed the hour of Disney love that ABC needs and would be a fresh show that might prove more profitable and rating worthy than OUAT is of late and likely will be at the end of this season.

KeymasterMulling this over a bit more with Matt and neither of us thinks this is immediate cancellation news for OUAT. The network, as I pointed out above, is in sorry shape all around and if the new dramas go bottom up–like Notorious is certain to do looking at its sad state already–then OUAT will seem like a safe option.

KeymasterGoing through ABC in general to get the big picture and in sum, it’s not pretty. It’s sort of down all over the place, except for a few comedies and Grey’s.
Marvel’s AoS saw a -20% decrease
Grey’s Anatomy saw a +23% increase (not shocking at all)
HTGAWM saw a -30% decrease
Quantico saw a -12% decrease
Scandal does not have a number because it’s not airing in the fall of 2016 though the ratings have been in a bit of a decline so it’s either a decrease as well or it’ll be only a small increase. ABC is suffering all around.
Dancing with the Stars only saw an 8% increase
The Middle is -12% down
Fresh Off the Boat is down -16%
The Goldbergs actually increased to +5%
Modern Family is actually -6% (that’s a bit of a shock)
Black-ish is down -11%
The biggest deceases, however, are OUAT, HTGAWM, and AoS
