I think the only reason why I still watch OUAT is because it’s a train wreck and I can’t look away. x

Parts of it, certainly. And no I can’t believe I’m about to say this (of all people…) but there are still things hidden and embed within that make me smile or joyful or go “Hey! There it is. There’s the show.”

It was corny and cheesy and silly but I seriously teared up at Henry’s whole “make a wish and it’s magic” and “believe like you were a kid!” speeches.

For better or worse I enjoyed more of this arc than I have enjoyed anything about OUAT in a long time. Guess that means I have to my heart broken all over again when S6 inevitably goes sideways…

    Great.

LOL or it’s just an actor who happens to look like MRJ from a distance through a camera lens?

So, Rumple choosing to go for the Olympian crystal did seem the logical step if he (a) didn’t know a portal was being opened at the time and (b) has no faith that TLK will ever work for him and Belle.

Well a) he did know because he says “a portal” right before it opens and while your b) is true certainly it doesn’t help anyone to have the crystal but not the girl. Rumple needs more power, in his head, and surely there are other ways to get it; maybe not as fast or convenient as the crystal but there are other ways to get more power. But you can’t get another Belle. I just think the scene is meant to be read as a conflict, in that moment he actually had to stop and think about which one to chose, however he rationalizes it, he had to stop and think. And while he can say “I had to save the crystal to save Belle” it’s an excuse and somewhere, deep down inside, I think he knows it. Or maybe I still hope he does….

but even I can pretty much tell they’re just dragging out a Rumbelle TLK until Robert Carlyle leaves (which likely will be at the end of S6). While I don’t think Rumple really deserves to get Belle back after what he did to her, I do think the writers of the show will end Rumple’s final arc with a TLK.  Probably Rumple will die in the end (since “villains don’t get happy endings”), but not before he saves Belle and their unborn child.

And that I agree with. I’m just not sure if it’s going to be fulfilling.

Mind you, I don’t think they will actually show Regina as being weak. That would be boring. Also, they’ll want to show good Regina as a complete and interesting person in her own right because many viewers will be rooting for her. So I don’t think what they’ll show will necessarily be what you’d expect or even what would make sense.

The very little we did in the last few moments of the episode suggest there’s no change at all, really. She was still Regina in all the ways we recognize her. She stood up to Hyde; she was snarky; she was helpful in restoring magic to SB; she was with her son and her family and had no noticeable differences.

Side note, but I wish Hades was still around. I’d love to see the results of the serum on him.

I don’t think she’ll be weak or timid but if the EQ represents all her passion in extreme then the new Regina might be missing some of “muchness” to quote another fairy tale.

I dont think normal humans can turn into dragons.

    Unless you’re magicked into one.

    Here we go!

General: I won’t lie; I got rather distracted this episode so I don’t have a huge analysis but I will say…I like that the big characters are working together instead of having their own separate missions. Baby!Batman is easier to deal with when he’s part of a group (ironic given his lone wolf status as an adult?)

I also like how identity of the characters is finally being built a bit more slowly. Baby!Batman should make mistakes; he should falter (for heaven’s sake, he’s 15! He’s not actually the Dark Knight yet). And being reminded of his human problems (endangering the lives of friends recklessly) is a good way to remind us that he’s not yet Batman.

It’s interesting, speaking of identities, that Strange is giving his creations mythic identities; like he’s filling in the blanks with archetypes (war goddesses!) because they are easier to grasp and hold on to than the more complicated real people personas. It’s just not well executed in all cases when these new archetype-filled people speak because the show doesn’t excel at dialogue in general.

    LIKED

–Harvey being the Captain is a blessing to mankind. “So, he’s….dead.” “Until literally someone else wants the job.”

–“We need to gather the court.” LIKE THE COURT OF OWLS?! *half an hour later* YAAAAS. Court of Owls!

–Seriously freaky effects for the stretchy-face.

–“How much more damage could we do? She’s dead.” Attaboy, Strange. Live that trope to its fullest.

–“My name…is Fish Mooney!” I never liked Fish, personally, because of the sheer over-the-top, scene chewing that is Jada Pinkett Smith. But the delivery of this line (and the idea behind it) is perfect because a character that hams it up as much as Fish does WOULD remember her own identity. She’s 1000% comfortable in her own skin so her identity isn’t as flexible as others.

–Oddly enough, I really enjoy the Baby!Batman and Dr Strange moral relativity conversation. It was tense and highlighted some of the themes of the arc.

–Miss Peabody’s “ain’t got no time for this” is lovely and I’d like a scene with her and Harvey please. The moment when she goes “oh no” in a total deadpan and then walks away leaving Strange to the Owl was priceless.

–“It’s totally part of the story!” Selina gets how religious narratives work. Good for her, street urchin that she is.

–Wut? A clone of Gordon complete with a wig!? Wut? Someone….explain?

    DISLIKED

–“You are a sacrifice to the goddess of fire!” A character I had totally forgotten about comes out saying the most ridiculous manner of stuff possible. Off to a good start, here.

–I keep forgetting that Lucius Fox is actually a character on this show; deeply underused when he should be there with Baby!Batman, along with Alfred.

–The guards at Arkham just let Jim casually stroll in because of a lie without even checking on anything? It doesn’t raise their red flags at all?

–Not enough Nygma. (though, “I think you’re not quite grasping the power dynamic here…Turtleneck” was almost made up for the lack of Nygma)

–Magical light up garbage can! That’s something we’ve never seen on OUAT

    Hmmm arc rankings….

    S1

    S2A (1-16)

    S3A (tied with S5B)

    S5B (tied with S3A)

    S2B (17-22)

    S4B

    S4A

    S3B

S5A (this is the arc that never happened as far as I’m concerned. It was all a bad dream…)

Nope not bad at all. But Adam is completely incorrect in what he posted and that’s why he retracted.

    For our own records

that said, both 5A & 5B were incredibly stable. Both essentially ending where they started. Which made us happy!

    — Adam Horowitz (@AdamHorowitzLA) May 16, 2016

But this isn’t entirely true either. S5A fell .5 from beginning to end. 5B did start where we ended and 5A did start where 4B ended (also a 1.8) but…there was a drop in between 5A and B.

Season Five-A Premiere Ratings: 1.8 (“The Dark Swan”)

Season Five-A Finale Ratings: 1.3 (“Swan Song”)

Season Five-B Premiere Ratings: 1.3 (“Souls of the Departed”)

Season Five-B Finale Ratings 1.2 (“Only You/ An Untold Story”)
