KeymasterIf this doesn’t show that Rumple can’t change, then I don’t know what will. I think Rumple’s doomed at this point.

KeymasterOnce Upon a Time opened up a whole new world of stories in the season 6 finale — a good thing for fans, but not so good for the residents of Storybrooke.
Because Belle’s (Emilie de Ravin) father refused to wake her from the sleeping curse, Rumple (Robert Carlyle) was desperate for more power, linking the Olympian Crystal to all the magic in Storybrooke. In their bid to stop him, Emma (Jennifer Morrison) tries to sideline Regina (Lana Parrilla) in the wake of Robin Hood’s (Sean Maguire) death. But Henry (Jared Gilmore) realizes magic has done more harm than good and sets out to destroy it.

KeymasterThoughts for JUST 5×23 “An Untold Story”
Thoughts: I think all my likes outweigh dislikes. Or rather, I like the themes instead of actual characters. The characters, at this point, feel totally disconnected from the show as it once was, but sometimes there’s some serious magical feelings that linger in this narrative–like the power of belief and how it can lead to honest magic. That’s special and very resonant with S1 of OUAT. I always applaud when the show remembers what made it unique and worth my praise.
LIKED
–Land of Untold Stories; a safe haven for characters fleeing for different reasons. That’s kinda cool. Means that A and E have some idea of all the stories/mythologies/legends out there that they could explore if they felt the need. That’s scary but still kinda intriguing.
–“My parents, Hook and Zelena have been pulled through a portal!” “Again???” (I feel ya, Regina. I feel ya)
–Thank God one of the heroes figured out the gardener was Jekyll/Hyde. If they couldn’t be clued in by all the heavy handed hints, then they were useless.
–LOL at Emma and Regina trying to get the upper-hand on Rumple and him never once being fooled.
–“To be fair, I was fine running”
–Dragon! MANY years later and we finally see him again. (Why is it imperative that Regina win the battle with darkness/light within?)
–“Magic is everywhere if you’re willing to see it.”
–Using the power of a wish to bring your family back. “When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are….” that’s powerful. It’s one of the most powerful messages in the Disney-verse. I actually kinda teared up a bit thinking about this.
–Henry encouraging everyone to believe using the idea of nostalgia, the idea that when we were younger and less jaded we were capable of belief the likes that can change the rules of the world. Isn’t that what drew so many of us to OUAT in the first place? That nostalgia for our childhood stories, for a time when we believed in the possibility of magic and hope and happy endings? I don’t get sentimental about this show a lot (not anymore) but that’s powerful stuff.
–Isham’s score for the Land of Untold Stories.
–Violet’s dad is a Yankee from Connecticut. That’s hilarious.
MIXED
–This is a land without magic. And it is a land with magic. Now the writers have made canon the idea that they can have their cake and eat it too. The world building is SO horrible.
–Rumple likes the darkness but he does say that the light is part of him too (even though he links it only to Bae and Belle, which is problematic since he’s lost both of them)
–So S6 is when all the misc stories can play out before the show risks getting cancelled? With a side of the EQ? Okay, I’ll see it through.
DISLIKED
–“I just went to hell and back. I’m not afraid of your warden.” Chillax, dude.
–Henry destroyed magic in 5 seconds flat. Like he literally held up a cup for five-ten seconds and POOF. ALL of magic is gone. LOL Okay. (Also, Ghostbusters much?)
–“This is a serum I created to separate the good from the evil.” No! You don’t say! Thanks for explaining what I can see.
–They actually separated Jekyll and Hyde! No. That defeats the entire point! That’s like…the total opposite of the novella. (also, god that was weird CGI)
–Rumple, Henry didn’t make you lose Belle. YOU DID. You chose the magic over HER. You literally chose the shard over her.
–All those people in NYC SAW magic. Like real magic. What happens now??? It was an act? Like…no. LOL.
–I don’t really like the idea of being able to destroy your dark parts. That’s not how identity works. You can’t just crush another part of yourself. You can learn to manage it; to fight those evil or not-so-good tendencies. You can’t literally destroy an identity that you simply don’t like; it’s too easy. It supposed to be hard and be work. So Regina destroying her Evil Queen persona isn’t…really a good thing for the narrative. It means we can wipe out “villainy” from the characters via a magical solution—without them having to earn it, work for it.
–Did magical mitosis give Regina two hearts? Cause she sorta just crushed her own?

It was fine. It was an episode to get us to the finale, really. That’s not necessarily bad. I’m glad they set up the other land storyline early on in the episode and didn’t wait until the last minute. There are some neat ideas that will get expounded upon in the second hour. That’s good.
In other words: a fine episode that doesn’t merit much thought but doesn’t anger me by any means.
LIKED
–“When you’re upset, we follow you to Hell!”
–Magic is outside SB now because Henry took it outside in the crystal. That’s actually kinda cool.
–Seeing magic in the “real” world; we’ve waited years for something like that.
–“We’re not in SB anymore” LOL at the obvious Wizard of Oz lines.
–Blood magic tracking spell = continuity!
–Hank Harris as the “Groundskeeper”
–Sam Witweir as the “Warden”
–The Mental Hospital people know the Dark One? How….? (not a snarky question. Actual surprise and intrigue)
–Robin hid a letter inside a Robin Hood’s book. That’s hilarious.
–Emma and Regina’s conversation in Neal’s apartment. Really fantastic work from Lana and some telling lines that probably set up the theme of next season, like “I’ll never be at peace with myself;” and “I was consumed, constantly at war with my instincts.”
–“I’d rather suffer than see that pain on the faces of people I care about.” That’s how you do character progress, people.
–ALL THOSE BOOKS IN THE LIBRARY! HOW?! WHY?! (that’s really interesting! That’s really cool! More of this!)
–Henry laying into his moms about magic. I don’t agree with his rationale but at least someone had the guts to stand up to both of them.
MIXED
–Neal’s apartment. Memories. Lots of them. Except Emma doesn’t even mention any sort of memories or feelings or…anything. Mmmkay.
–Henry has to “name” everything. But Operation Mixtape? Really? Whyyyy?
–So this is….science-fiction land? Populated by Jules Verne and H.G Well and Robert Louis Stevenson characters? Is Cthulhu there by any chance?
DISLIKED
–Henry lists all the bad things that magic has caused but neglects the death of his father. PLUS: magic isn’t bad, Henry! People do bad things with magic, which is a neutral universal force. Has he not grown up at all in these past few years?
–“Fate is cruel.” Fate….the writers….whatever
–Rumple is just….nonsense at this point. He’ll go after his own grandson, Neal’s child, because Henry threatens his power. No hesitation, no qualms…just *poofs* to hurt Neal’s son. Also, randomly hurts strangers who want to make him pay for toll booths!
–Regina doesn’t say goodbye to Roland. Mmkay. But Zelena, who raped Roland’s father and who pretended to be his mother, gets to. I repeat…Mmmkay.
–All extraneous characters dealt with swiftly and quickly with no mess and no fuss. Time for a new arc, guys!
–Neal, the guy with no unfinished business, had an unfinished quest to destroy magic and kept it all in a journal. And never mentioned it. Ever. Mmkay.
–This never before seen or heard of cup is the end of magic! It’s right here! In front of everyone’s nose! In NYC! Inexplicably! MacGuffin alert! MacGuffin alert!
–What the HECK was that CGI of the transformation?
–Rumple went for the magic crystal first and not Belle. RIP Rumbelle. You used to be great.

KeymasterI know it’s an hour before showtime but…anyone wanna predict?
I’m going with a 1.2 overall. Finales for OUAT historically never fall so I think we’ll hold on to the steady 1.1/1.2 we’ve been getting.

KeymasterI think it’s fan made. Promo pictures for episodes tend not to break the fourth wall. There’s also the total lack of background….

KeymasterBut as Watcher pointed out in another thread, no magic to hold the sleeping curse means Belle could die. Like what happened with Henry in season 1 when he was dying before Emma broke the curse
You’re applying logic to a show that doesn’t know what consistency is. If the writers decide that “no magic = sleeping curse broken!” then that’s what happens (same with what you and Watcher are saying; it’s impossible to say because it all depends on what the writers want in that moment, so unknowable is their world building). The only thing “no magic = sleeping curse broken” would keep consistent is 1) Rumbelle TLK denial (an ongoing issue) and 2) Rumple = evil, selfish big bad (again, an ongoing theme)

KeymasterGrandpa???? Since when Henry calls Rumple that? They seem to avoid that relationship.
Henry does it fairly frequently. He even did it last week.
