KeymasterWhile this was the weakest episode of the arc to date, for me, there were some good bits and it’s still loads better than the last bit of S5A. I was never going to like this episode to begin with and I did have a lot of eye-rolling about some hero-izing that was going on, so that’s in my reactions (as a heads up).
LIKED
–Someone wanna get me Cruella’s boots, please?
–“He kissed you?” “Thought he was you.” (S5B version of “we were cursed!”)
–“Even for the Underworld, it is dead in here.” (Bless you, Hades)
–“What would you like to try first? The champagne or me?” (Family show! 8pm!)
–Regina gets that Emma is too good for Hook. (total SQ bait, but I’m good with it)
–“Don’t argue with your mother. Or your mother”
–Cruella has handcuffs to spice it up. Am I horrified or amused?
–Hades blowing Capt Silver off a cliff. That was amazing. More of that ridiculous camp please.
–Okay, okay. Everyone was right; Heaven isn’t Olympus. It’s individualized. Thank the Lord.
–Henry and Grandpa David moments are precious and perfect and we need more of this stuff. This is the stuff that matters on this show. THIS. Right here. This human connection and family moment of love and acceptance.
MIXED
–Liam’s judgement of Emma. I agree that Emma has become a selfish, self centered woman who apparently puts her love life ahead of everything and everyone. But Hook isn’t some saint who resisted darkness his whole life, like Liam said. He embraced it. Headfirst. Including senseless murder and collecting trinkets from his victims. So do souls in the UW know things or don’t they? How can Liam not know what’s going on with Hook in the 100+ years? We need *some* consistency here please.
–Hades is in the book? Since when? I mean, yes, yes, it makes sense to some extent. But there is something to be said about characters appearing out of the blue in the book just because it’s their arc and if it’s “as above, so below” then shouldn’t Hades be in the Upperworld book?
–Hades is a god. His powers are limited in Overworld. What mythology books are these people reading?! But, it’s nice to know that Hades does interact with people in Overworld; makes for some interesting possibilities.
–Hook admitting–freely!–that he is a horrible villain who did terrible no good things! Good! Yes! I like that! Self-awareness is good! Too bad it all comes to naught and Emma can’t open her eyes to see all the thousands of red flags about her boyfriend. Seriously. How many times does it take, Emma? He says he deserves punishment and that he shouldn’t go back to SB. Stop trying to absolve and white wash him and what he did.
DISLIKED
–The rules down in the Underworld are flexible because of course they are.
–I thought Hook never drank or gambled until Liam died. Cause it wasn’t part of Good Form.
–“The Eye of the Storm” is a real tangible thing. In fact it’s the MacGuffin of the week, folks!
–Does Merlin not have unfinished business? I find that hard to believe.
–OMG turn off the hair! It ruins everything!!!
–Liam thinks Hook is a true hero in a way he never was. Okay, for the cheap seats in the back, Hook killed many people and collected trinkets to memorialize those kills. He also tried to send a 13 yr old (of his girlfriend!!!!) to Hell. Stop this nonsense. Let him *pay* for his crimes. It’s unfair to every other villain on this show who is paying for their crimes.
–That’s the worst ever hiding place for a glowing pen.

KeymasterWhat bothered me is that they disregarded that Rumple broke only one deal – leaving EF with Bae, which was a huge plot point in season 1.
Wow. I completely forgot about that little bit of line he gave to Regina back in S1.
I guess we could rationalize that Rumple didn’t break the deal so much as give the Healer something else instead of a baby (death….) but even that’s not exactly neat and tidy especially since Rumple himself is of the opinion that the death of the Healer doesn’t fulfill the deal so much as stop it dead (pun!) in its tracks.

KeymasterSlurpeez raises a good point and it’s one that people have raised a bit over the years: how much open communication is there between Rumple and Belle about those issues that would give normal people pause at the very least and send them running for the hills at the most? It used to be that people wondered if she knew about Milah’s death or not. It does come down to the fact that any meaningful character development and interaction is usually left off screen because the plot takes center stage (and the fact that Belle is little more than a prop on this show) but now, because of this episode, not only do we have to wonder if Rumple ever told her about his baby-exchange contract but we also have to wonder if Belle knows that Rumple has sent Hades more souls than anyone, including Regina.
And yes, Belle’s stance is that she loves Rumple, even the parts of him that belong to the darkness, but at some point that platitude begins to sound not only empty but incredibly idiotic. Like, say, in this situation with this betrayal.

KeymasterIIRC filming ends on April 2nd, which means one more week for filming. Ready for the final scene of the season to be spoiled?
*chuckles* Yup. This show has almost never been able to keep the big moment a secret.
1: Snow and Charming’s reunion
2: Off to Neverland on the ship/GOAT kidnapping Henry
3A: Very high res photos of Rumple killing Pan and Pan turning into Malcolm
3B: No Elsa photos because that was shot in secret
4A: Did we have photos of Rumple and Belle at the town line? We knew they were filming there but I don’t recall photos? We did, however, have loads of Cruella/Ursula photos right after.
4B: Photos and video of Emma taking on the Darkness
5A: Everyone performing a ritual to go get the Pirate.
So…yeah. We’ll know.

KeymasterDo you think that abc can still afford keeping the show with those ratings?
Dunno. I’ll be very interested in the ad buy ratings for the new season. It’s odd, this TV business thing. The ad buy rate actually went up in between S4 and S5 even though the ratings dropped from 401 to 422.
While I do think we’re going to go fractional tomorrow night, I’m expecting a bit of a rebound the following week and then for it to stay steady for at least a few episodes (2 maybe?) which puts the next drop around 5×18, then we might be fractional with more frequency. I do think you’re right that it’s not just Easter and other factors but that people really are losing interest overall. That’s what happens to all TV shows though. Even something like Grey’s Anatomy ain’t what it used to be.
ABC’s decision about S6–how many episodes, if it’s the final season–might come down to how many fractional episodes we have in 5B

Keymasterc) Rumple thought he had nullified the deal by killing the healer and only has just discovered himself that the deal still stands.
I’m actually surprised by this. Rumple has said before that he has a penchant for deals and it seems that Rumple never stopped to consider that someone else might have taken up the deal/bought the deal. If you listen to the latest podcast, we actually had a lawyer writer in and explain that while human trafficking is pretty illegal (obviously) the mechanics Hades was talking about of the deal belonging to him now are perfectly valid.
(Yes, yes. I know that PLOT is dictating this story line and prior to S5B there was no such thing as a healer, snake bite, ect but….just putting that out there)

KeymasterDidn’t feel much like giving my thoughts on the third episode of the new arc, but the latest episode–which focused on Nygma/Gordon with a heaping crazy side of Penguin and Pee-Wee Herman–was utterly delightful. It was easily the best episode the latest arc, and maybe the best episode since early S2 with Jerome. This is the sweet spot for Gotham, a crazy train ride of over the top campy and iconic villains with Jim Gordon continually getting caught in the cross hairs. Forget the villain-of-the-week approach, show. Stay here. It’s where you belong.
In other news, I continue to not care about the bildungsroman of Baby! Batman, Baby! Catwoman, Baby! Ivy, and the other future Batman universe characters who show up as preteens. It’s so weighted and pretentious as to be eye-roll worthy. We all know Baby! Batman is in no real danger. We all know Baby!Batman will only learn good lessons about justice. Move along, show.
