Do you think showing the Underworld is a “jump the shark” moment of any fantasy show?

No. Fantasy operates with a lot of archetypes and tropes. The Hero for instance. Whether literal or metaphorical, the hero tackles the Underworld/concept of death and is victorious, thus signaling his status as the hero. It can be powerful and very well done–just look at Harry Potter with their metaphorical crossing the threshold to the “Underworld” in book 1 or the more literal Limbo-like status of King’s Crossing in Book 7. Like Lily said, it’s about the stakes. The stakes are extraordinarily high in HP (of Buffy or SPN or even their katabasis moments of fantasy literature, like ASOIAF or the more urban and deconstructed world of the Magicians).

The problem isn’t the appearance of the Underworld and a lord of said place—that is a pretty natural situation for OUAT given their adoption of the hero myth. The problem is that the stakes in the Underworld haven’t been made big and bad yet–Hades just sort of blandly threatens them (while being charming, yes) and Cerberus is too easily killed–and at the end there’s a bridge to Heaven.  It also doesn’t help that the world building is fairly unimpressive and leave a lot of questions open.

If Matt’s theory is right, then it does raise the question of how a healer could make such a deal. Unless he’s working for Hades.

Sooo if it’s life or death, I’m guessing that Bae was really sick and Rumple made a deal with the devil to save his son? But for what price? It’s not like he agreed to be the Dark One at some point down the road, right? Doesn’t that rob “A Desperate Soul” of all its weight? Funny how this has never come up once–does that mean that Nealfire never knew? Golly, that sounds like unfinished business to me! (if Rumple goes this entire episode without wondering about his son in present day, Imma need a table) (especially with Milah there)

I think it is Fendrake the Healer that Rumple will make a deal with in the flashback. Here’s my theory: Rumple made a deal with Frendrake to save Bae’s life, but at a steep price. The cost is that if Bae dies later on down the line, his death could never be undone. Hence why Neal apparently has no unfinished business and is in Olympus, even though he should have unfinished business with his son and Emma. That would be the writers’ ultimate way of saying that he’ll never be resurrected.

So Hades has nothing to do with it at all? That would be interesting (and a bit of a subversion of how most of these deals tend to go). And it does give more to Rumple’s serious overprotectiveness toward Bae both before and after he became the D.O.

You’re on to something. Now stop giving them ideas.

OMG! In addition to Rumple being in NYC, so are Henry and Violet (on what appears to be the street where Neal’s apartment is located). This is all happening in an episode called Only You. I swear, I need to calm down and take a nap. #NoMoreHope

Hook’s captivity takes a dark turn when Hades threatens to condemn him to the River of Lost Souls

    O_o

Because calling it by its Greek name would be overkill after “the Underworld” “Hades” “Olympus” “Hercules” “Cerberus” and “Megera”??

Gold is suddenly eager to help Emma, Snow, David, Regina, Robin and Henry find Hook so he can return home to Belle; but in order to do so, he must find his ex-wife Milah in the Underworld and ask for her help

Because Milah’s unfinished business is Rumple/Nealfire? So he has to help her move on so he can go home?

In Fairy Tale Land flashbacks, Rumple and Milah face a life-or-death crisis concerning their son, Baelfire, that forces Rumple to make a deal that will haunt him,

Haunt him so much that we’ve never heard of it!!

    Dean Petriw as Young Baelfire,

Understandable given that Dylan is now waaaay told old. But 🙁 Dylan

Just make a new thread, guys. Matt just made one: discuss it there, please and thank you. It keeps things organized for all involved.

Okay, I understand that Jared himself is growing up quite quickly, but in the show universe, Henry is still only 14(ish). C rushes and puppy love are one thing (and since it got next to no development in S5A, it can remain in the teeny bopper phase). I mean, yay for the show remembering that Violet was a thing, but whyyyy are they in NYC? Seemingly alone? Or at least sans parents?

Well, they’re not totally alone in the Big Apple, because we know Rumple is there, too. So, at least Henry and Violet aren’t totally unchaparoned. It might be that Rumple and Henry travelled there together on some mission, but that they split up for a few hours.

    Quote

Right I know Rumple is there. But…do you see Emma and Regina agreeing to let Henry and his mini-girlfriend go on a trip with Grandad, who happens to be “the darkest dark one of them all” (or however the promo said it)…a guy Emma keeps threatening and is super suspicious of?

With that said, I can totally buy Henry sneaking off (he’s an expert at it) but Violet comes along because….why? She’s vital to Henry (squicky! He’s 14!)? She’s important to the story (she got maybe 2 dozen lines in 5A)? She’s got super secret knowledge that Henry needs (chick’s from Camelot)?

The medals for Hercules’s labors is what would happen if a quarters collection and a video game achievements system had a love child.

This amused me to no extent. I mean, I know the show is obviously not going to go the route of the actual mythology (because dead Meg and children and temporarily insane Herc do not a family show make….) but like, who is giving Herc these medals? I’m just picturing Eurystheus–the dude who set the labors and most def did not want Herc to complete them and kept making them harder–giving Young Herc medals for a job well done. Like, LOL…no.
