Aww, I feel your pain Emma (Caulfield). I have to wait until tomorrow too.

I wonder if Emma (Swan) takes certain souls outta the Underworld.

A new promo is up on the ABC site. Again, there isn’t a lot of new footage. http://abc.go.com/shows/once-upon-a-time/video/most-recent/VDKA0_musxzpve

Interesting. For what it’s worth, I’ve been watching ABC since 8pm tonight—no OUAT promos at during TGIT (ABC’s biggest night)

I am still not understanding why people are thinking the clothes that Emma is wearing in the scene with the Bug outside the store are Underworld clothes.

Me either. Emma went to the Underworld in jeans, white sweater, and her red jacket

The clothes she’s wearing in that one scene looks looks like a blue hoodie and then she changes to black coat/outfit for the night scene. I think it’s pretty clearly a flashback

I think the biggest problem with S2 was that the writers could never settle on if the story was internalized or externalized.

What I mean by this is that there were some huge plot points like child-parent dynamics of betrayal and forgiveness and manipulation with Regina-Cora, Rumple-Nealfire all while Emma was figuring out how to be a daughter to Snow and Charming. Those are very internalized stories. They exist inside the small circle of characters and don’t touch on the outside world and characters too much.

But then on the other side you had Rumple bringing magic to SB right off the bat. You then introduced the idea of the Outsider in Greg which morphed into GOAT/Home Office. Someone out there hated magic and wanted it eradicated and was using two people who had similar ideologies as their tools of destruction. This is a very external storyline. It involves the outside world and characters who stand outside the small circle driving the narrative.

It’s possible to have both–and looking back, I think they handled it better than they’ve handled a lot of the stories since–but it did feel off kilter at the time. We go from Cora being set up as the Big Bad to Greg crashing his car back to Cora as the main villain but only to dispose of her rather rapidly, introducing Tamara and then by extension the Home Office and suddenly we’re off to Neverland. The result being that the internal stories never felt like they were given proper weight and the external stories never felt fully developed.

We’ve talked about the genders individually, but what about together. Specifically I’m thinking about female-female interaction and male-male interaction. I don’t really have a question but do have a few observations.

The first season really hit female-female relationships, in all their complex forms, out of the park. Regina/Snow, Mary Margaret/Emma, Emma/Regina, Emma/Ruby, Ruby/Snow, Regina/Cora, Regina/Belle. All of these were highlighted to some degree (and more! I’m just sticking with the most memorable/lead characters). They were nuanced and complicated. I loved seeing that, at first, Regina saved Snow’s life and Snow tried to ensure that Regina wouldn’t lose her mother because she understood that particular pain. Or how Regina and Emma could put aside their bickering for a hot moment when Henry was trapped in the mines. Even in S2, we got to see Snow (not MM anymore) try to be a mother to a reluctant Emma–I love the nursery scene in which Snow hugs Emma. As the show progressed, however, these dynamics got a lot less attention. Snow saying that she’d stay with Charming in NVL over going home with Emma, or saying that while she loves her daughter, she really wants another baby because “we missed it all.” Regina and Emma still get a lot of development (though I suspect ulterior motives behind this from the writers). Belle is probably the biggest victim of this, never having a female friend for longer than a single episode and never being apart of “gal time” when Snow, Emma, and Regina are all doing something together. However, while I do think that the show has become too lax in their female-female treatment, it’s certainly better than the males.

I remember back in S1, A and E talking about how Rumple was jealous of Charming. He wanted to be the knight in shinning armor and the hero but knew he couldn’t be; he admired Charming’s White Knight tendencies and had respect for him. This idea played out a bit in S2’s “The Crocodile” when Charming and Rumple had a little day adventure. But that’s…about it. There have been small moments–like Rumple saving Charming’s life–but for the most part, male-male friendships are all but non-existent. Hook and Charming might speak to each other during a scene, it’s not camaraderie. Rumple and Hook loathe each other with the fire of a thousand suns. Robin and Hook have had a few moments that were actually interesting, though it seems as if they were always about their respective love interests/entanglements. Neal and Rumple, of course, had tons of potential for showing male-male friendship (along the lines of Emma and Mary Margaret) but also a father-son trying to heal their fractured relationship. I’m really struggling to figure out why male-male friendships seems so non-existent in this show. I have a fairly cynical theory, but think I’ll keep it mum until I see what other people have to say.

So maybe that’s my question: why do positive same-sex friendships get left in the dust on this show?

Even if Sean doesn’t film on April 1st and 2nd doesn’t mean he’s being written off, either. They film the scenes out of order, and those few scenes simply may not involve him. They film what, maybe only 2-3 scenes per day?

That’s what I was thinking. Sean himself wraps earlier than someone like Emma or Regina.

Those rumors started because his agency posted that he finishes filming OUAT in March, which he does because they finish filming the season. Doesn’t mean he won’t be back for next season, it just means that his agency wants to find him something to do in the 3-4 months in between.

I think Adam said that they are filming later than March this year, but still…I think the rumors are simply silly.

Personally I just think the rumors are crazy and this is one of those big eye roll things, but..I guess we’ll see.

I don’t think Cora was raped by Jonathan, she made the decision to sleep with him because she thought him rich. Although she later regretted that decision, he didn’t force her. She was a fully grown woman who chose to have sex with a man. Yes he lied to her about his status because he wanted to sleep with her but he didn’t force her or coerce her into sleeping with him, that was Cora’s own choice.

No, I agree actually. I was using her as an example of a woman who gave up her virtue (her quote) and was paid a ton of consequences but the man didn’t. It was poor wording on my part.

If the women were only “tipsy” and agreed to sleep with Hook willingly then I wouldn’t call it rape. If however, it was the other end of the scale then I would agree that what Hook did was rape.

Well that’s part of the problem isn’t it? And what I was saying above. The writers use rape–or as I more often than not call it, wonk consent–to move plot without every actually thinking through any of those consequences. They have Hook drop a line like getting women drunk and taking them back to the JR for sex, or they have Regina and Graham sleeping together when he’s clearly not “The Huntsman” because he’s cursed but they never give any sort of commentary on it. They just have it happen and move on to the next plot point. This is what leads to massive culture wars between the fandom.
