They said his dark past would be shown in 417–so the story we got is what was the interviews meant. Doesn’t mean the writers can’t flesh it out *more* in later times, but for what we were told in interviews, the dark past is that he was not a thief who stole for others.

But she mentioned both times for the exact same reason: to flesh out Will as having someone significant in his life pre-Ana and pre-Alice. Both times it was the exact same story: she fell through the ice and drowned, and it serves to show that Will has lost someone and it affected him. Both times it reads like only a story to serve Will, not a larger plot. Also worth pointing out that both times the mention of her is in the past, never the present. If the stories had changed and if they had been in the present, Will recalling her, then I’d say she might appear. Given the writers treatment of Will thus far in the present day, I’d say it’s unlikely that a family connection is going to pop up. An old enemy? Certainly. But family? Not so much
