There was an actual event that explains why life sucks, people suck, everything sucks and why everything continues to suck. Usually it’s because humans do a thing (Pandora, Eve).

    They’ve had Pandora’s box in S3A.

And let’s not forget that Blue said that the Dark One’s powers are not from their world way back in “The Return.”

And we still don’t know who made the original Dark Curse, and stashed it away with the Chernabog to guard it…

If Merlin’s lost love = original DO (or first DO tied to the Dagger) = Nimue, and if we are indeed doing the whole Underworld thing for the second half of the season, is it possible that DO magic originates from the Underworld — like a bit that got trapped on the wrong side of a realm, and either mutated into or was harnessed as dark magic? Perhaps because the original DO (Merlin’s lost love, or her immediate predecessor) wanted more and more power, and caused some sort of rift between realms meant to be kept separate?

Wouldn’t surprise me at all if Dark Magic originated in the Underworld. How could it get unleashed into the world?

Maybe Nimue’s dying, and Charon’s coming for her, but Merlin tries to save her, and Charon has some magical plot device doo-hickey full of dark matter for problem cases like this where folks try to resist and he’s gotta drag them outta there with the black tentacle stuff, but because it’s Merlin there’s a big old magic battle that happens, and he magics up a sword to fight with, and the dark matter enters the sword in order to control it, then thrusts itself into Nimue’s heart to finish her off, and when Merlin tries to pull it out the blade snaps, and in desperation to not have her leave, he does a magical whatever to create the Dagger and have her bound to it, so that as long as the Dagger stays with him, so will she, and as a result, dark magic stays in the world too.

    Or something?

    Quote

Or, how about this: Nimue actually does die, and Merlin goes to the underworld and brings her back. But the consequence (price / side effect) is that some darkness from the underworld comes along for the ride when he brings her back. It wouldn’t have been released on the world if he hadn’t gone to save her. So he gets her back, but she is infected with this darkness and becomes the first dark one!

It would perfectly parallel how most of us think the darkness will be banished this season. 🙂

Wait, you mean other that OUAT’s writing decisions? ^_^

It’s not an original theory, but it fits with a lot of myth structures (‘world out of balance’ via the original act of pollution). At this point, they’re pretty heavily mired up in big scale cosmology, so it would be a waste if they didn’t try to tie in the Dark One origin/Merlin story with something as “proto” mythical as a journey to the Underworld plot.

And on that note, perhaps “snuffing out all the light” is just faulty programming — the Darkness trying to get back to its conditions of origins, but the realms are closed, things are trapped where they shouldn’t be etc etc.

One could even read Head!Rumple’s diatribe about “family” always getting in the way as a metaphor for what also makes one cling to life and hope.

    Quote

OR, snuffing out the light could mean that the darkness wants to make ALL realms into an extension of the underworld! Thus bringing the underworld, and the rest of dark magic, here to where the darkness is!

Oh, I know! So Pandora’s box was originally used to smuggle a bit of dark magic out of the underworld, which then became the Dark One! 🙂

^ That’s a good point. From Regina’s perspective, nothing is as bad as hurting your own kid. Hurting someone else, anyone else, even if they trust you, will never be as bad in Regina’s eyes. Partly because of Cora, and also because it’s Henry and she doesn’t want her son to experience the same betrayal that she did.

–Carnival in a can….well, that’s one to describe Soda

The most annoyingly out of context product placement I’ve seen since … something else that I won’t get into right now. But Violet’s amazement over Pepsi was a little too forced. She doesn’t know what soda is so she says “Carnival in a can”? How does she know what a CAN is?!?!?! 🙄

–Regina shooting down Hook trying to teach Henry how to woo a woman. Atta Tiger Mom!

LOL, yeah. I’m a Hook fan and I always like him, but just at that moment he managed to look as sleazy as possible, LOL! 😆

^ Emma could still have cast the curse. She has all the memories of the past Dark Ones, so that would include the one who put Merlin in the tree.

wait, was this the first dark one? or was this just a dark one?

WHAT IF: The woman he loved, Nimue, is the dark one, right? And when he said you took her away, he was talking to the darkness inside her, not the person. And his plan was to kill the dark one, but he couldn’t because he loved her. And so she turned him into a tree. That’s what we are talking right?

    Quote

You wouldn’t know this (because you haven’t seen Star Wars), but you just made a Star Wars parallel!

When a good person embraces darkness, and becomes evil, and takes on a new persona, their loved ones say to the evil persona “You killed” that person. As in: the evil persona destroyed the good person they used to be.

That is a VERY Star Wars way to look at this! 😀

I don’t understand why Emma even planned to use Henry’s tears though. I mean, she had no idea that Regina’s tears wouldn’t work. Why did she plan for it in advance? I would have understood if after taking the tear, the darkness rump showed up and told her it won’t work because such and such reason and then she decided that has to the violet heart thing and then during the ritual she “accidently” drops the bottle containing Regina’s tear and then Henry just so happens to show up at that point, wherein she takes his tear and sets merlin free.

It’s just all to convenient that this happened the way it did.

    Quote

We have been seeing less and less of Head!Rumple, as Dark Emma’s actions become more mysterious to watch. But of course he’s still there. It’s entirely possible that he DID tell Emma that it wouldn’t work, and we just didn’t see it. 🙂
