I’m using my historical understanding of a medieval setting. You rarely pick up and leave home. He was the village spinner. Every village has one and probably no more. You cannot come in and infringe on another person’s trade because people aren’t going to flock to you when they’ve got Jon Doe who has been spinning for the village for years as did his father before. But “starting over” isn’t actually that easy. You can go to a town and set up shop but that’s incredibly expensive. And you’re not giving any of Rumple’s desires any consideration either. He didn’t want to leave. She did. Ok, irreconcilable differences. But she’s a coward and a horrible HORRIBLE mother who left, leaving her child behind to think that his mother was dead and never understanding. She’s no better than him in the end, but you’re not giving your vitriol to both parties. Rumple was a coward from coming home from the war? Well Milah was an unreasonable unforgiving…word I can’t say without banning myself…
Yep. And not to mention, the last time Rumple tried to make a fresh start somewhere else with his family (aka his father) was a fiasco. Rumple was cruelly abandoned. He lost his family. The experience must have been really traumatic; It haunted him the rest of his life, and even centuries later the straw doll his father gave him when he was a child still made him cry . So yeah, I can easily see why Rumple was so reluctant to leave the village. He was scared to death of losing his family again.

The old Ruple wouldn’t even consider talking to Hook. He would just kill him or make him forget of something becouse of their past. And I love that Hook must learn the hard way that sometimes you just have to let go. I dosen’t matter if the hand was cursed or not. Hook has to deal with his past sefl and accept that part of him to truly move on. Fantastic character development here. If there weren’t any backslides for both of them, it just would not be realistic at all. It is hard to change your habits not imposible but very, very hard. I think this scene is perfect. I want more interactions between them.
I agree. I’m surprised Rumple isn’t more sneaky. I expected him to curse the hand/not to give a warning and then evilly laugh behind Hook’s back when he gets in trouble. It’s very fair of Rumple to warn Hook, given that he dislikes the guy. And yeah, the old Rumple would have turned Hook into a toad. 😉
As for Rumple/Milah situation, I’d just like to point out that the point of those flashbacks was to show that evil isn’t born, it’s made. That before the villains became villains, they were victims. Yeah, maybe Rumple wasn’t a model husband, but he had his issues due to his traumatic childhood experience and being bullied/ostracized by the other villagers (and Milah) because he wasn’t what a man was expected to be. However, he wasn’t a bad guy and didn’t deserve such a horrible treatment. It wasn’t his fault that he became such a timid, weak man he was. If anything, Rumple and Milah were both victims of the harsh, misogynistic society they lived in.seamstressParticipantHook can only blame himself if he gets kicked in the teeth. He was warned.
“Unlike me you haven’t changed one bit”. LOL. If that were true, Hook would already have been turned into a snail. 🙂
seamstressParticipantThey are promoting Rumbelle? Really? Wow.. I’m in shock! 😀
It’s a lovely poster. Well done, abc! 🙂
seamstressParticipantThere’s also the fact that Regina wasn’t supposed to see Henry ever again.. That was the price she had to pay for stopping Pan’s curse. And yet she did.. perhaps that’s why she lost Robin instead? The price must be paid. So, if Regina wants Henry, she can’t have Robin, and vice versa..
seamstressParticipantGood choice.
Does anyone else think that she looks a bit like Cora? Perhaps they are sisters, which would mean Belle and Regina are cousins. Now that would be a twist! 😀
seamstressParticipant1) I think it was perfectly human of Belle to feel useless in Storybrooke whilst Rumple was off in Neverland going to what he thought was his death. Belle wanted to help Rumple and she felt like she was doing nothing. Belle may have said “I will see you again” to Rumple when he left, but a week on her own with no word on what’s happening with Rumple, and doubt was probably starting to creep into Belle’s mind. What if Rumple didn’t come back? What if that was really the last time she saw him? Belle wanted to help but felt helpless so Ariel bring Belle Rumple’s message gave Belle the boost and hope she needed. 2) Ariel’s message from Rumple brought Belle renewed hope. Up until that point Rumple thought he was going to die in Neverland until he thought about Pandora’s box. If someone tells you they are going off to die and you don’t here anything from them for a while, you begin to think they might be dead. Ariel’s message from Rumple gave Belle renewed hope that Rumple would return. 3) Belle should not have tried to make Rumple promise not to go after Zelena. He didn’t promise, and whilst I get why Belle asked him not to for his sake, she could have worded it differently. I agree that’s down to the writing rather than the character herself. At the same time though, it seemed like Regina was going to let Zelena go free and give her a “second chance” which seems quite insensitive of Regina. If it had been Henry that was killed because of Zelena, you can bet Regina wouldn’t have been so forgiving. So I think everyone was a little insensitive of the fact that Rumple had lost the most because of Zelena. 4) Zelena seemed to keep the dagger on her person at all times so freeing Rumple in FTL may not have been an option at that point. Belle was able to speak to him and get the required information when the others were ready to just give up. The idea was to defeat Zelena which in turn would’ve freed Rumple since, even if Rumple wasn’t in the cage, Zelena only had to command him with the dagger which would’ve made him a danger to everyone. Zelena already tried to force Rumple to kill Belle once, he’d have never forgiven himself if he had actually harmed her. Whilst Zelena still had the dagger and was free, Rumple was a danger.
This! All of this! Thanks PoM, you said it better than I did. 🙂
seamstressParticipantwhich Belle are we supposed to analyze? season 1&2 Belle, or season 3 Belle? Belle is not Belle anymore. Do you remember that Belle who discovered the buried gold inside her “beastly” employer’s heart? Remember that Belle who was so sad that Rumple lost his son, she cried for him, the Belle that loved Rumple so much that his feelings mattered most to her? Remember that Belle, the one who said that she will never stop fighting for him? Belle, who understood why she had to stay in SB while her beloved man goes out to the land without magic to look for his only son? Belle, who understood and accepted that she had to stay in SB while her beloved man goes to save his grandson at the risk of his own life, but who had complete faith that she will see him again? Who is she now? Now she is an immature baby. Let’s analyze her one subject at a time: 1) Belle, who was mature enough to understand and accept that she had to stay in SB: she is now complaining about “he didn’t need me” that’s why she didn’t go with them on the ship, because she wasn’t important enough. Belle became a little girl who needs to feel important! Who cares that her boyfriend was going to his death, SHE doesn’t feel important! 2) Belle had complete faith that she will see him again did she really believe that she will see him again as shown in season 2? No. season 3 Belle was sure he was already dead. Did you see her reaction when Ariel said she had a message from him? “he’s alive?” she asked, astonished. (yay! He needs her help! Now she has something to do! Now she can feel important!) 3) Belle used to care about Rumple’s feelings… now all she cares about is herself. When she enters his shop for the first time since he was resurrected she is all happy that her sparkly boo is back. Never mind HOW he got back. HIS feelings don’t matter. His only son died because of him, but SHE got him back. Yay! 4) Belle said she’ll never stop fighting for him It took them 8 months to decide to break into the castle. Not to free poor Rumple, but to get information from him so they can save Snowing’s new baby. She knew Robin-Hood, she knew he can break into the castle. Did she have to wait so long to break in and try to free him? Steal the dagger? Something? Where is all that fiery “I will never give up on him”? Isn’t part of never giving up on someone, trying to free him from a cold hard cage? Even when they did finally break in, freeing him was only the secondary goal, a side effect if Zelena is defeated.
1) I think it’s very understandable to be afraid that your man doesn’t really need you when he is the most powerful sorcerer of FTL and you are just an ordinary, non-magical woman. Belle was just being human there. And she did miss Rumple and was worried about him.
2) Rumple went to NL to face his undoing. Remember, the prophecy? He thought he was going to die. Belle knew this so of course she was happy and surprised to hear Rumple was still alive.
3) I must admit that this bugged me too. Not the fact that Belle asked him not to go after Zelena, but HOW she did it. No condolences or making sure Rumple was okay, only that demanding “promise me you won’t go after Zelena”. Yeah, it felt pretty harsh. But maybe it’s just the writing..
4) The writing again..
seamstressParticipantI was watching the situation from the characters’ POV.
Imo Neal’s death was the stupidest and most unnecessary thing ever, and I doubt I’ll ever be able to forgive the writers for it. But I’m trying to move on and focus on the remaining good stuff aka Rumbelle. 🙂
seamstressParticipant@seamstress Belle is actually not that confident. In Dark Hollow and even in Snow Drift we saw a self-doubting side of her. She didn’t think Rumple needed her in NL and she thought that every time she had tried to be a hero it had backfired (Dark Hollow). And in Snow Drifts Rumple’s dagger is too much responsibility and power for her and only when Rumple lied to/assured her that he trusted her with this task, she kept it. However, I admit that these moments are rare but since Belle’s screen time is not very high, it’s normal that her “flaws” – though that’s not really a flaw – can only be seen shortly and from time to time.
Very true.
I like to think that before Belle met Rumple, she was kinda like spinner!Rumple before the ogre wars. As she told in Skin Deep,”I always wanted to be brave. I figured, do the brave thing, and bravery would follow”. Just like Rumple! But there aren’t a lot of opportunities for women in FTL to show what they can do, and Rumple was just a simple peasant so there weren’t a lot of opportunities for him either. Then they got their chance: Rumple was called to the front and Belle made a deal with the Dark One. And as we know, things didn’t go quite as planned for either one of them. Kindred spirits, totally. 🙂
However, we know why it was so important to Rumple to prove himself. But we don’t know why it was so important to Belle to show what she was made of. Did she simply got the idea from her books, or was there something else? I hope this will be further explored. There are good theories based on what we saw and heard in Skin Deep and what we know about Belle’s father, but those are still just theories. And as RumplesGirl said, the things that happen off screen have a little relevance.
And about Belle seeing Rumple as a noble person: he indirectly told Belle and Bae that he didn’t want to be the kind of man he was before, when they came back from NL and since then Belle had absolutely no reason to doubt him (Mostly because he was dead for a few months and then held captive by a lunatic witch).
True. I had forgotten about that. But I still think that she was being a bit too gullible. Rumple is still the Dark One, after all..
Nontheless, I hope that we’ll see a very strong reaction of her when she finds out that he lied to her, killed Zelena and then used her as an alibi. Whether she will be angry at him or doubt her own morals if she won’t be angry that he killed Zelena (that would be nice and come full circle with her dark side shown in Lacey), I don’t know, but in my opinion it’s very important for the recognition of Belle’s character that she doesn’t forgive him after 1 episode and everything is back to normal.
I agree, but I hope that the “strong reaction” doesn’t mean the silent treatment and separation for the half of the season, and then she just returns to him because she is tired of being angry, and they never truly deal with the issue. I want them to put more effort into this. Both of them. They are married now, so they can’t just walk away/sweep problems under the rug.
