It seems like Rumple and Regina’s desire to force the Author to rewrite their stories is ill-fated, as Geppetto warned.
I’m not sure Regina wants to force the Author to rewrite her story. Keep in mind the Author or the Sorcerer sent Robin Hood the alternate page 23. Why would he do that if he felt like Regina was going about getting her happy ending by force?
She was also very humble when she asked the Blue Fairy for help. I think the reason Regina gets her AU and Rumple doesn’t is because she DID go about everything the right way. I just think about how smug Rumple was in the scene in Heroes and Villains in Regina’s car at the town line. He thought he had it all figured out.

Am I right to assume this would occur before Marian but after King Leopold’s death? Or should I just not assume anything because this is (seemingly) an AU?
