Worth noting – pretty sure I saw a tweet from Adam a week or two ago stating that due to guest star availability/etc, they’re filming some scenes from the preceding few episodes concurrently with the finale. Will edit with the Tweet if I find it.

I mean, we do know for a fact that the plan for 4A was changed when they got the go-ahead for Frozen, and the lamp has always been (IMO) the most likely candidate for what was originally going to come out of the portal. It’s been a heck of a detour if so, but maybe some of that is finally coming into play in the back half?we also know they thought of the Zelena/Marian twist at some point during the season, right? So that could have delayed this plot AGAIN so as to not have Zelena and Belle pregnancy drama at the same time.
I’m veering into murky conspiracy theorist waters, but it -does- fit, I think.

After rewatching the scene again, the more I think about it, the more I think there’s a slim chance they might have been considering this as far back as season 3. Maybe they just introduced the Black Fairy’s wand back then just to solve the current problem – but it DID appear in both arc finales, and correct me if I’m wrong, but season 3 ended with the initial Rumbelle marriage, right?
Plus, does anyone else remember A&E’s strange insistence post-3A that we’d learn how Pan got the picture of Henry “someday”? Could it have come from the Black Fairy, somehow?
Though, to be honest, I’m also still not entirely convinced BF’s name isn’t Morgana and I’ll forever be haunted by the fact that prior to 5A, A&E’s answer re:Morgana was a “Can’t say” which changed to a definite “No” mid-arc. I can’t help but assume that implies a change in plans, so either they were deciding between her and Nimue for First Dark One, or she had another proposed role that they either chose to cut entirely or delay until a later point.
While we know the writers change their plans and/or make up a lot as they go along, when they got around to deciding on who Rumple’s father was, and especially over the process of writing an entire arc highlighting it, I find it frankly impossible to believe the discussion of who, then, was Rumple’s mother didn’t come up in the writer’s room.

I wonder if it’s worth noting that Rumple has the Black Fairy’s wand in his possession at some point (presumably) after this – Emma used it to reopen the time travel spell in the S3 finale. Could be that there’s another piece of the story to be told if they’ve actually considered this before now, but…not going to hold my breath on that one.

So…was Rumple the child of BlackPan or is the unsaid implication here actually that he was never Malcolm’s biological son? Seeing as how the Black Fairy gave him away without even naming him or whatever the line was? The episode title is plural, after all, and traditionally ‘Changeling’ has been used, ahem, interchangeably (sorry) to refer to the children taken by fairies (the mentioned victims of the BF and, more positively, Gideon) and the fairy children left behind in their place (Rumple, I guess?)
just exactly how retconny is this retcon, anyways? And will we ever actually get any follow up on this? I’m so frustrated.

That is actually a really good point. Not familiar at all with the actress, but was mainly trying to remember if we’ve ever gotten a recurring character before whose casting wasn’t announced or even hinted at prior to the press release? That + the article’s lack of specifying her as recurring or joining for a multi-episode arc, which I think they typically do if that’s the case?
oh, come to think of it, beyond the obviously indicative episode title, we didn’t get any casting confirmatiom for Nimue until really late in the game, did we? Maybe I take it back then. I’d love to be wrong.

Well….I’m disappointed that the Black Fairy is presumably going to be a one-off appearance, but I *am* excited to finally be able to put my Black Fairy Morgana theory to bed one way or the other three years later.

Nitpick: The “Firebird” is the name of a distinctly different bird in Russian folklore, not an interchangeable word for Phoenix (though phoenixes are strictly speaking “fire birds”, yes). Assuming the title’s meant to refer to resurrection, I’m actually really bugged that they didn’t go with simply Phoenix or From the Ashes or something because Firebirds don’t resurrect.

Going to propose an alternative meaning, seeing as I just finished rewatching season three and with this likely being Zelena-centric – the first thing the title made me think of was a Zelena quote from 3×14 when she’s shaving Rumple with the dagger and she’s talking about how the two of them never had the option to ‘put on a good face’ in the past because no matter what they did, their “outsides showed exactly what was rotting on the inside.”
While I think the past few guesses in this thread are probably more likely than a title being influenced by a passing line two seasons ago, I wouldn’t be surprised if we were to see Zelena going green (again) in Oz in 5×16. Also given her speculated connection with a certain Lord of the Dead, “Our Decay” feels to me like an extremely appropriate title for an episode revealing HellWitch backstory, though I can’t help but think that 16 is too early for those flashbacks and based on what little we know and what we can assume, too crowded storywise (not that it’s stopped them before, has it?)
