SirMedrautParticipant
Are there any actual dragons of note in Arthurian Legend? Like, I know the show Merlin had that one dragon in particular that was chained up in the cave and gave Merlin guidance, but I dunno if he was based on a pre-existing character or was an original creation? I think I’d prefer someone like that be the baby daddy, rather than them taking a character who isn’t known for being or turning into a dragon and just tacking it onto their character.
Not strictly speaking, no. In Geoffrey of Monmouth’s History of the Kings of Britain, there’s an incident or vision of sorts where a red dragon fights and overcomes a white dragon, where the red dragon was said to represent the Welsh and their ultimate/eventual victory over the white Saxon invaders. That motif has been expanded on or alluded to in various works (like the two dragons on Merlin), but there aren’t any actual, characterized dragons in the various legends that I can recall.

SirMedrautParticipantAs I’ve held Morgana-is-the-Black-Fairy as a headcanon dear to my heart essentially since the first mention in 3×11, I’m glad y’all are finally on the same page. I’m going to be devastated if she’s not in season five, honestly.
It’s probably strange, but I think personally the question that’s nagging me most about Merlin is that I really wonder what type of actor they’re going to cast. His Apprentice was an old, stately man with a beard; I’d just be surprised if Merlin was, too, I guess.

SirMedrautParticipantRather than Merlin, I’m with Gaultheria, my money’s on Arthur Pendragon.
Though, admittedly, the idea of Arthur turning into a dragon and having a child with Maleficent just doesn’t sit right with me, so I’d much rather it be Medraut/Mordred Pendragon, which I think would just be far more fitting all-around, but I’m not holding my breath on that

So apparently Ariel won’t be meeting Ursula at all…which begs the question then – what the heck is she doing in the episode? Not that I’m complaining, I’m thrilled to have Joanna back even for a scene, but…why?

SirMedrautParticipantHalf dragon, huh? I guess I can settle for half. Close enough.

SirMedrautParticipantShe’s got her own castle but doesn’t seem to rule over anywhere. What she does have in that castle, however, is a number of treasures that she’s protective over, per OUATIW, I believe. It’s been a long time since I saw that episode but I believe there was implied to be a lot more besides the looking glass Will stole, right? At least the Merry Men were there for something else entirely? Very traditional dragon to sit on a horde of treasure like that. Rumple collects things too and he’s not a dragon, of course, but that’s neither here nor there.
Similarly, Regina has transformed into a rat (though only the once way back in 1×02 I think, right?), but no one has ever referred to her AS a rat. Whereas we’re only a few episodes in and Mal’s already been explicitly called a dragon by at least Cruella and Emma, and I think there might have even been one or two (Regina/Rumple?) more that aren’t coming to mind immediately. The other two QoD-centric titles are plays off of song titles, but Maleficent’s is, of all things, “Enter the Dragon.”
It could all amount to nothing, but I’m putting my cookies in this basket for the time being.

SirMedrautParticipantAnd once again someone (Emma) refers to Maleficent as a dragon, correcting herself from originally calling her a woman. Really starting to believe that she might not be a person that can turn into a dragon, but the other way around.

SirMedrautParticipantI feel like making Walt Disney the Author would be too much of a jump-the-shark moment for me. Besides the fact that he was a very real person (yes, yes, so was Blackbeard, but it’s not quite the same; Walt lived and died within the last century), he *isn’t* responsible for all the stories on OUAT. Most of them come from Disney movies, yeah. To name a really big one: Rumple doesn’t. The Wicked Witch doesn’t. Robin Hood, Mulan, The Little Mermaid, and Beauty and the Beast are also Disney films that have been featured with varying levels of prominence that were released after Walt’s death. Even the ones that came out while he was alive – 8 different people have writing credits for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but not one of them was named Disney. He oversaw and produced the films, I’m sure he likely had plenty of input, but was by no stretch of the definition a writer.
I know it’s a semi-popular thought, but the idea of him being the Author just wouldn’t sit well with me for reasons like these, honestly. I’ve come to a point where I’ve got no idea who the Author is and while I expect the Sorcerer to bear a recognizable name (Merlin, naturally), I’ve half accepted that the Author might just be the Author until proven otherwise. I kind of like the “Stranger Than Fiction”-esque idea of the Author not knowing what he/she is writing is real (much better than the Author being omnipotent giver-of-happy-endings, for sure).

SirMedrautParticipantI’m with MP on this one, I don’t really see much similarity myself besides the hat. I get a sort of Lady-Mob-Boss-chic feel from Mal’s SB outfit; I like it a lot, honestly, though I know I’m in the minority. She’s already shown herself in flashbacks to be the dominant Queen of Darkness, the outfit to me feels like an extension of that. The Don with her gang of witches. I dig it.

SirMedrautParticipantI really disliked the Stefan/Maleficent angle of the Jolie movie, so I’m really hoping they don’t do it here, too. This article gives me vague hope, in their description of Maleficent as “half reptile” and the mention at the end of dwarves and eggs. Some reptiles (including, ahem, a couple of komodo dragons in captivity) are capable of asexual reproduction. They’ve referred to her as a dragon enough now, I think, to assume that she’s more than just an exceptional human witch capable of transformation. I think (hope) Mal might actually be mother and father of the baby.
