Things I didn’t like: While I enjoyed certain parts of the episode like the Arthurian legend, the plot points were mostly very dull and repetitive. There was major retconning of of how the dark one curse works. Another amnesia curse? Really?! *eye roll* Hook’s harebrained idea of releasing Zelena and endangering Henry would’ve backfired had it not been for Regina. I don’t think Emma would appreciate her boyfriend endangering her son’s life again, but of course, she’s left in the dark. Hook skirted Emma’s question of how they got to the EF.

My favorite thing: The things I enjoyed the most about this episode were Regina’s cunning and snark. As usual, her lines were best written and true to her character, as well as delivered very well by Lana.

Prediction: Moreover, I see Regina becoming the new savior, replacing Emma. Knowing that these writers are huge fans of Star Wars, I wouldn’t be surprised if Regina takes up the mantel of savior and uses light magic to neutralize the dark magic enveloping Emma, thereby brining balance to the “force” of magic. Emma said to Regina: “Now save me as I saved you,” which sounded like foreshadowing to me. After 6 weeks, they all came back to SB, and Emma said there was no savior in town. One can infer that in order to set Emma free, there needs to be a new savior. The fact that Regina was dressed in red (the color heavily associated with savior Emma) points towards Regina becoming the next hero. I think that could be what Merlin’s prophesy predicts, (“When the light becomes dark and the dark becomes light, a new savior will arise to end the night”). Also in support of my inference are clues from the past several seasons: Regina was willing to die to save Henry and the town from the fail-safe, Regina broke Snow’s dark curse with TLK and used light magic to stop Zelena in S3, and Regina’s hero blood is what Henry used to rewrite history in S4. Regina is the new Emma.

    1) How would you classify Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone?

For young adults (teenagers versus children’s lit)

    2) Thinking about the series as a whole, where do you rank HP: SS?

    Probably somewhere in the middle.

    3) What do you think of JKR’s writing in this first book? Does it suffer from being her first published work?

It is a bit juvenile in some places, though still entertaining enough to captivate adults.

    4) What surprised or shocked you the most in re-read of book 1?

How much Albus Dumbledore took a hands-off approach and to what end. Like Harry, I knew Albus Dumbledore wanted Harry to find the sorcerer’s stone, but I didn’t know the greater reason the first time I read it. Upon the re-reading, it’s a bit chilling to know what Dumbledore is asking of a boy.

nevermore wrote: Yes, but we can’t have a logical solution to an illogical problem, now can we? Ok, in all seriousness — would a hug/relieved kiss from the kiddo work as a TLK? Would a routine peck shared by an established, long-married couple have curse breaking potential?

Henry has been keen to save his mother, along with Emma’s parents, Hook and the rest of them. So I find it curious that none of the characters even suggested it. There may not be enough “gravitas” for the sake of the show (I fully get that TLK question has to carry out over at least 11 episodes), but it’s interesting to note the length to which the writers went to avoid the elephant in the room. Henry and Emma hugged, as as did Emma and Hook, yet neither one even attempted to kiss Emma. Weird!

My issue with TLK and Emma right now is that she shouldn’t need it. She is TL Incarnate; she shouldn’t actually need any assistance from anyone.

While I 100% agree that Emma ought to be the one to save herself as she has before, I’m very surprised that no one even thought to mention TLK — not even Hook. Goodness knows he’d like to be the one to save Emma, so the fact that his character didn’t even mention it or attempt it is odd, especially since he’s been so keen to try it before. I’m not saying a kiss from him would’ve worked, merely that he didn’t try, which struck me as very strange, especially given how much Hook and Emma usually lock lips.

The fact that Emma is still the dark one 6 weeks later indicates that either no one tried kissing her or they did and it didn’t work…Come to think of it, I’m wondering if Regina is going to be the one to save Emma. As odd as that sounds, Emma did give the former evil queen clear instructions “save me as I saved you.”  Perhaps Regina has to take up the mantel of new savior and use light magic to neutralize the dark magic enveloping Emma. After 6 weeks, they all came back to SB and Emma said there was no savior in town and yet Regina was dressed in red (the color heavily associated with savior Emma).

I wonder… Can TLK be initiated by the person who is cursed? It seems to me that the whole TLK canon hinges on the cursed person being saved by an outside intervention from someone who loves them no matter what, but also with no hope of the kiss saving them or having any sort of efficacy.

Even so, Henry could’ve willingly kissed his mom just because he was glad to see her. Bata bing.

What do y’all think the Scooby Gang did?

Took away her freedon and made her crush someone’s heart.

Why the heck didn’t Emma just kiss someone? Henry is Emma’s cannonical true love going back to season 1! Emma had the perfect opportiunity to kiss Henry as soon as her family arrived. TLK is supposed to break any curse, and unlike Rumplestiltskin, Emma wants to be rid of the dark one curse! It should’ve worked on her. The reason of course is obvious: Emma Swan must go dark and TLK is a series-end sort of thing. But still, from the perspective of the characters, plot hole. I’m surprised Snow and Charming didn’t at least suggest it.

Now Henry is being persuaded by Hook to trust the woman who led Neal to his death?
