What I suspect will happen in the finale — and actually what will bring about the demise of this AU — is some sort of inherent flaw in the very design of the story, such that while it all appears like a HEA for the villains at first, they remain fundamentally unchanged, and it all comes apart at the seams in the end. Perhaps, a literal Catch-22 scenario (so, a logical fallacy in the very premise) that then references the Isaac Heller/Joseph Heller name.

Wow! Great analysis and theory. I concur. The fact that Cruella’s last name in ALWM was Feinberg would also seem to corroborate with what you wrote. Here is my analysis of the significance of that name and what it means for villains getting their happy endings.

Whenever a CS scene happens, my reaction is the same one Tiana has:

Hook annoyed me so much last episode. The way he deliberately antagonised Rumple in the diner and gloating, knowing that Rumple couldn’t do anything in retaliation without making his situation worse, then acting all sweetness and light for Emma’s return. It’s two faced and petty, and most of all, it’s actually shades of bully boy behaviour picking on someone you know can’t fight back for what ever reason, and Hook knew Rumple couldn’t do anything because he called Rumple “toothless”.

THIS! What Hook said to Rumple just really rubbed me the wrong way. He said, “So I get to find my happiness, and you will never find yours.” It wasn’t just gloating. It was sheer vengeance and hatred, as if he really hadn’t changed at all in the past several centuries. Hook is extremely hypocritical. He tries to come across as a moral guy to Emma, preaching about the virtue of forgiveness, all the while still harboring extreme hatred in his heart.

Maybe we should keep all this in mind–the writing of Heroes and Villains is Rumple’s subjective lens.

You could very well be right. Is that why Hook is still a one-handed pirate in the AU? Nothing about his outward appearance seems to suggest he’s changed at all. We’ll see what Hook’s characterization is like.

I never thought I’d say this, but I think I love Cora.

So concerning what Rumple and Isaac do to Hook in this AU, someone somewhere else suggested this interesting theory. What if in this reality, Hook becomes the coward? I could totally see Rumple telling Isaac do that to him.

I could, too. However, the brief snippet we saw of Hook makes him look like a swashbuckler still. He’s still dressed in black, he’s still wearing guy-liner, and he even has his hook still. Based on that, I think Hook is still a pirate in the AU, since he seems to straddle the line between hero and anti-hero. Come to think of it, how does Hook still have his hook if this is an AU? It seems Isaac didn’t want to change Hook’s characterization that much, since he could’ve easily written Hook has having a hand again.

Also, if this is an AU in which the heroes and the villains swap places, then how is it Belle is still dressed like a fairytale princess? Belle is a hero in the original story, so shouldn’t she be a villain in the AU? I suppose maybe Rumple influences Isaac to leave her alone, since his happy ending is about being a hero and getting the girl. Yet, if the rules are now stacked against heroes, making them into villains who don’t get their HEA, then that role-reversal should technically also apply to Belle, meaning she wouldn’t be getting her HEA.

Because now all the heroes and villains will know what it’s like from both perspectives. It’ll be a new case of “we are both.”

That sounds about right. A&E have hinted that the finale would result in changing circumstances (a la “magic is coming” end of S1) rather than totally changing the characters themselves. Though the characters keeping their AU memories would change their perspective, and arguably, their characterization.

Maybe because they are bringing in MRJ! :) :) :)

I know it’s only wishful thinking but do be kind and don’t squash my hopes by being a voice of reason that provides me with logic. Let me live my dream until Sunday.

Oh man, if only! If that happened, I’d have to pinch myself to make sure I weren’t dreaming. Like you, I know it’s probably wishful thinking….but yeah. Let’s go with that fantasy until shown otherwise. 😀

Hmm, now I wonder… At this point would that actually be a shocking twist? I mean, this has been foreshadowed so much throughout this half of the arc. Rumple’s death had been essentially flagged with neon signs and the whole Dark One problem suggests that Emma would be the most likely candidate. Is this all actual foreshadowing or is it the magician trick of focusing the audience’s attention on one hand while the other is pulling a fast one? Are we maybe being blindsided here?

I know what you mean, but unless that outdoor scene of Emma holding the dark one dagger and disappearing turns out to have been an intentional false ending, then I think it’s happening. Rumple will no longer be the dark one, and Emma will take his place by adding her own name to the dagger. I know sometimes shows film more than one ending so that even the actors don’t always know which direction this show will go, however, Once has never been that sophisticated. Big huge end-of-season spoilers like the first curse being broken, Henry being kidnapped, and time-travel have all been spoiled each and every year. Season 4’s ending is no exception, with it having been spoiled months in advance that an AU would be happening. I think Emma becoming the next dark one, and therefore the big bad of S5, is the twist that is being set up here.
