The second clip makes me more suspicious of AU Robin. Why would a common thief like Robin want magic, and why hasn’t he aged? Could he be Jafar in disguise?

Emma’s magic has been shown to be either white or yellow (except when she was the dark one). Regina’s smoke magic is purple, but her actual magic energy is red. Cora’s smoke magic was purple, too. Zelena’s magic has been consistently green, both in smoke form and energy form. I think Rumple’s magic has been shown as mostly red, as has the magic of Peter Pan and Gideon, Rumple’s second son. Also, I think Hook had red smoke magic when he was a dark one.

Wasn’t he? He could have killed someone who was about to propose (but it’s okay because it was probably some random dude unrelated to Emma so no one cared about him).

Good point. For all we know, Hook may have stolen the engagement ring in the past and stashed it on the Jolly Roger. He may not have paid for it at all but instead taken it at his pirate booty. That’s what pirates do.

Also, for the love of all that is holy, can someone please explain to me where Hook got the money to buy the rock? Does he have a job? Does anyone have a job? How does money circulate into SB? Or does Regina print it? How does produce? Seriously, what is the political economy of this place– because I don’t understand it one bit.

I was wondering the same thing! The ex-pirate has been unemployed for a long time now and sponging off of his girlfriend. He was basically homeless before he got his ship back or moved in with Emma. Why don’t the writers give him a job already? It seems like he’s going to be in it for the long haul, so why not show him providing for his future family? Maybe Hook pawned one of his murder victims’ rings or had some stolen money put aside from when he and his crew acted as highway robbers during the missing year. I suppose we can be thankful that at least Hook didn’t give Emma a ring from one of his many murder victims, as I was fearful he might.

I’m hoping it’ll be positive, but I have my doubts, though I was pleasantly surprised by last week’s episode when Rumple helped Robert basically without a price. Rumple understood what it was to long for his lost son. It reminded me of early seasons when this show really used to be about family and reconciliation. I loved the dynamic between Rumple and Baelfire, and I hope tomorrow’s episode does it justice.

I wish Zelena had been written out long ago. She isn’t a likeable character at all in my opinion. I think it’s terrible that she gets to raise her daughter, whom she conceived by raping Robin Hood, while neither Robin nor Neal got to raise their children because they died young. What is this show? Before I get accused of just being disappointed about a ship, I’m not even talking about romance but about parenting and children. The morality of the show is total crap. The writers don’t care at all about what kind of message it sends that the feelings of murderers and rapers are more important than the general welfare of children and infants.

I…get that he’s “changed” because he doesn’t murder people anymore but this is one of the biggest problems with OUAT; because they care more about redemption for the villain that for justice the actual scales are never balanced. Hook doesn’t and won’t lose anything for making people lose the most precious thing of all (their life). And the constant affirmation by everyone that it’s okay, it doesn’t matter, because he’s “changed” really undercuts the crime in the first place. At least for me. Hook, and Regina/Zelena (less sure about Rumple) will walk away having to pay very little for their crimes. Hook gets the girl, the happy ending, the family, the love, the acceptance, and an unnaturally long life (he is like 200 years old now). Whereas Robert, a guy genuinely trying to do the right thing and make up for his past mistakes (actual atonement!) gets a knife through the heart. The moral message here is…not great.

Indeed, it’s not great. No main villain (besides King George) has really served much time nor actual punishment for his or her past crimes. Why is it that only George is serving his time in the hospital basement? Zelena hasn’t served serious time for murdering Neal, and she gets to raise her and Robin’s child (against Robin’s strong wishes). Regina has served no time for murdering Graham nor has Hook served any for murdering Merlin. Rumple has lost out on his family as a result of his own misdeeds, though he hasn’t done time since the EF. The rest get the family they wanted. Indeed, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of justice on this show. What is going on?

I’m going to quote from A Clash of Kings by GRRM here to underscore this point. King Stannis chopped off the finger tips of a smuggler named Davos, but then he made Davos a knight for his faithful service and loyalty after Davos swore allegiance. Davos keeps the finger bones in a bag around his neck to remind him of justice.

Stannis: “Why do you keep them [the finger bones]? I have often wondered.”
Davos: They remind me of what I was. Where I came from. They remind me of your justice, my liege.”
Stannis: “It was justice,” Stannis said. “A good act does not wash out the bad, nor a bad act the good. Each should have its own reward. You were a hero and a smuggler.”

King Stannis has a reputation for his justice. While I don’t always agree with Stannis or his deeds, on this point I think he’s right: a good act does not wash out the bad, nor a bad act the good. Sure, a person is capable of both good and bad. A former pirate like Davos can quit smuggling and instead serve the realm as a knight. However, King Stannis didn’t let the crime of smuggling go unpunished. While medieval justice was harsh, the point remains. Davos was both a hero and a smuggler (a bit like Hook). Yet, Hook’s misdeeds remain unpunished (as do those of Regina, Zelena and Rumple). There isn’t real justice. Even for fantasy, OUAT is far less realisitic than ASOIAF, which is a fantasy but firmly based in reality.

I don’t get it either. Do they want us to like Hook? They have him be a murdering, serial killer who lies to Emma all the time. Who hides his past and has tried to murder the entire family. None of Emma’s family really thinks well of him. Then they have an episode where they pretend like he is helping Charming and then at the end he finds out he killed Charming’s father and he lies about it again.

If they do want us to root for Hook, they’re not doing a stellar job because we keep getting mixed messages. I used to think the writers were writing CS as a cautionary tale (and some part of me still does), but maybe they’re just trying to have their cake and eat it, too. They want to make drama for drama’s sake by having Hook and Emma have yet another hurdle before they make it to the alter, but the end result is to remind the general audience why Hook and Emma never should have gotten together romantically in the first place.

Rumpel’s actions in that scene also suggest that Robert did not really have true love in his life — not true romantic love with Ruth, nor true parental love for the boys — otherwise Rumpel should have kept the hair for a backup of the true love hair spell. Maybe a person has to be oblivious to personal guilt, like Charming and Snow, in order for his or her love to be pure.

I’m pretty sure Robert and Ruth did have true love. Ruth gave her emerald ring to David to give to his future wife. In episode 1×6, Ruth said, “True love follows this ring wherever it goes, my son. I had it with your father, I’ve had it as your mother, now you will have it. Take it.”

I thought this was a nice moment as well. It’s nice that every once in a while the show remembers that Rumple was also a father who had lost his son and was desperate to find him again.

Yeah, that. It was a nice nod to Rumple and his love for Bae — his one real redeeming quality in my estimation.
