Emma & Neal Appreciation Week
Day 2: Why you love Swanfire
I could talk for days about why I ship these two, but I think it all boils down that I truly believe they are each other’s perfect match, their other half. There is just so much about them that I find so beautifully poetic.
They represent such opposites in so many ways, and then in other ways they are so completely the same. Emma is the product of true love, Neal is the son of the dark one. But they both grew up alone, feeling abandoned, orphans, lost. They became thieves, living on the streets, just trying to get by. Their situations were so different, but it left them both in the same place. Alone in our world, trying to make it on their own, knowing that their parents chose for whatever reason to not be with them anymore. The lost boy and the lost girl.
And then despite hundreds of years of circumstances, they found each other (maybe it was fate). And they fell in love. And for the first time, they each had someone who truly loved them and who truly cared about them. They wanted to settle down, get a real place, be together forever. They wanted more than anything to create that family with each other that they never had before. And then destiny got in the way, and Neal left her so that she could get home to that family he knew she always wanted (that family he never had) and it was awful and it was tragic and it was heartbreaking and you know what it did a lot of bad and caused a lot of scars and that pain will never go away – but within that pain there is still love.
While they were apart, they held onto pieces of each other. Emma was heartbroken and had every reason to hate him and move on and never look back. But she went to Tallahassee for two years. She wore that keychain around her neck for over a decade and now I’m waiting for the day he pulls it out of his pocket because he still has it now. She drove that yellow bug, that place they met, the thing that was once their home, for over a decade. Neal kept the dreamcatcher with him for all these years, it kept the nightmares away. Despite all the hurt, they never let each other go.
And then over a decade later, despite all odds, they literally crash into each other again. And in that moment, they both knew that despite everything, they still desperately loved each other. Emma didn’t even know the truth about why he really left her yet and she already knew she still loved him. And after all of these years, they still trusted each other instantly. They still had each other’s backs. They fell into co-parenting Henry with ease. They worked together and relied on each other and valued each other’s opinions They promised to always take care of each other, and after everything, they still are.
Much like with her parents, Emma is having to re-understand so many things about her past when it comes to Neal. For so many years she thought this man, this man that she loved more than anything, this man who was her first home, set her up and left her to go to jail because he didn’t care about her. And now she knows that’s not true, and it still hurts and it’s never not going to hurt, but now she understands the why. And she’s admitted that she’s still terrified and after losing him twice she can’t go through that pain of having him ripped away from her again, but she still loves him. She never stopped loving him. And she probably always will.
And then you have Neal, who has never in his life had anyone fight for him. Or if they did, he lost them anyway or betrayed him again. And anyone else he has trusted, has only used him. His mother left him. His father chose power over him. The Darlings took him in, but he sacrificed himself so their family could stay together. He finds a home with Hook until he learns the truth, and then Hook gives him up to Pan. He spent hundreds of years on that island, in that cave. He trusted August to take care of Emma, and instead August took his money and broke all the promises Neal had made him say before he agreed to leave. He finally tries to open up and love someone else, and she uses him and tries to kill him. His father always says he’s going to change, but let’s face it the man has a habit of relapsing on those promises he makes. Neal has never felt that he’s worthy of anything or anyone.
He has this absolute hope and faith in people, that people are inherently good, and he trusts them. And then they use him, lie to him, leave him. He knew when he left Emma that he hurt her, and he regretted it everyday of his life. He took the easy way out and didn’t try to win her back the first chance he had because he thought she would never forgive him, would never be able to love him again (and if anyone know show hard it is to forgive that kind of betrayal, it’s Neal). But he’s not going to make that mistake again. He knows she loves him, and he knows that he loves her, and he knows he’s never going to stop fighting for her. after all, true love isn’t easy, but it must be fought for.
They have both faced so much, together and apart. They loved each other so much, and hurt so badly when they lost each other each time. When they were hanging over the portal they got a chance to admit those feelings they still had for each other, but without having to go into what that actually means for them because there is no promise of tomorrow when the person you love slips out of your fingers and falls to their (presumed) death. In the echo cave, they had to face the real truth of what they feel and why. The brutal, honest truth. And that truth is that they are still scared, and they are still hurting, but they still love each other.
And I believe more than anything that this was exactly what they needed. Everything’s out now: no more secrets, no more regrets, just honesty. And with that they can truly build back up to what they both want more than anything, to finally have that chance to be together and to be a family. They aren’t perfect and neither is love. Love is messy, love is complicated, and love is hard, especially a love with as much history and as many component as theirs. But they can do it.
They’re almost home.

ParticipantKeep the faith! Here is a breathtaking song by Amy Stroup called Hold Onto Hope Love, which really fits Emma and Neal’s story:

I disagree with this post about SwanFire not following any of the rules because it does, and it follows ALL FOUR!
I agree with all of your points!

ParticipantI love this quotation! From Tumblr:
“During their farewell hug, the way that Neal takes a moment and looks over to Henry. Because it’s not just about the girl to him. It’s about the family. And it’s not just about the family. It’s probably also about feeling good that he can have a moment to show his son (who is oblivious to all that has happened between Neal and Emma since prior to the portal fall) that he loves his mother. That he still loves his mother. And doesn’t wish to be separated from either of them. A moment to reinforce the idea that ‘this parting is not an abandonment’. Neal loves Emma, Henry loves Emma, Henry loves Neal and Neal loves Henry.”
