ParticipantToto was the best thing about Zelena & Dorothy’s encounter.

Participant–Was anyone else super annoyed at Hook’s impatience with Henry and the stories Henry was writing? Like it wasn’t good enough that the newly minted Author and 13 yr old couldn’t zap them out of the Underworld already?
Yes, it was super annoying. Hook was the one acting more like a petulant than was Henry! If I didn’t know any better, I’d say the writers were deliberately making Hook out to be a terrible father figure. To think that Emma didn’t rebuke the pirate! Would the real Miss Swan please stand up?
Do you think it’s deliberate that the writers are showing that any relationship, even one between the god of the underworld and the wicked witch, is healthier than CS?
Gosh, I really hope so! I tend to think the way the “heroes” are going to defeat Hades isn’t though any nefarious means but by Zelena and Hades’ relationship. Probably, they’ll kiss and melt Hades’ heart so that he can be happy again. If “Zades” is the couple who ends up sharing TLK this half season, I’ll laugh my but off so hard. It would send such a slap to another couple who’ve had at least 3 or 4 failed TLK’s by this point.

ParticipantA Tumblr post:
//Honestly the fact the freaking god of death that can’t even physically feel his own heart, that’s objectively the darkest villain we’ve had in a long time still treats his significant other better then even some of the so-called HEROES do speaks volumes.

ParticipantI like the name “Zades” better than HaLena.

ParticipantLOL! Even Zelena and Hades probably have true love!
My only satisfaction right now will come from Hades and Zelena having a big TLK and Hook/Emma continue to fizzle and never get the magic rainbow.
ETA – Hades, the lord of the UW whose heart of frozen, said he would never do anything to hurt Zelena, and he thinks what they have could be true love. Does anyone else wonder if this is a deliberate contrast to when Hook, under the influence of the dark one curse, said he wanted to hurt Emma the way she hurt him? I know Hades could be pulling the wool down over Zelena’s eyes, but the acting choices make me believe he’s in earnest (unless Hades is the biggest sociopath of all).

ParticipantSo, for example, is there a sense that a character might be popular for a short period, but “fade” fast (for whatever reason) whereas others might have most long-standing appeal?
Yeah that’s a good question. Because a character like Regina has been super popular since the beginning and really only gains in popularity as time goes on. But Hook has soured to the point where only one set of shippers like him/defend him and as time goes on he only becomes more polarizing. I’m also curious how they come up with these focus groups and what sorts of questions they ask.
I do wonder why Regina is more popular than Hook. I never ‘shipped’ SQ for the same reasons I never ‘shipped’ CS: too quasi-incestuous and too much direct and indirect harm. Both Hook and Regina have tried to kill Emma and her family. I get that Regina has arguably come further in her accepting responsibility for her past villainy than has Hook (though he did acknowledge he was the problem just last episode). As Regina also said in 5×15, she and Hook are a lot alike. Both spent decades seeking revenge.

ParticipantI don’t know if the writers are really aware of any meta-messages they are sending, and if they are, I don’t think they give flying squirrel dung about it.
So I rewatched certain scenes from 5×15: How could could the writers not be aware of how problematic Hook and his relationship with Emma is? They had several meta lines from various characters:
1. Hook admitted the depth of his crimes and thought maybe he should pay for them.
“I’m the problem. Emma, you were the dark one for six weeks and only gave into the darkness out of love. I plunged in head first, in a second, for revenge. I was weak! You raised the bar really high, Swan, and the fact is, I don’t measure up…I’m not sure I deserve saving. “
2. Liam told Emma that what she did to Hook was incredibly selfish.
“Killian’s been fighting darkness his entire life, and you pushed him off a cliff…It was a bloody selfish thing to do. He had a chance to die a hero, to move on, and you took it from him. Is [saving him] what he really needs, or what you need? … Stop thinking about your own desires, and let him go.”
3. They had Regina tell Emma that she was too good for Hook. “To be honest, you’re too good for Hook.”
The writers wouldn’t include those lines if they weren’t at least aware that (a) Hook easily gives into his darker nature (b) Emma acted selfishly by trying to keep him alive (c) she’s actually way too good for the pirate and he isn’t worth saving.
However, what they might not be aware of is how problematic it is to just then sweep those concern under the rug in the name of “forgiving one’s self” (as if that makes up for murdering Merlin or trying to send Emma’s son and parents to hell). *sigh*
