Cora could find his name on the dagger and guess it to be his name thus keeping in line somewhat with the traditional Rumple tale. BUT it doesn’t explain how she knows how it works. She called it the Kris dagger in Manhattan and I don’t think we’ve ever heard it called that before. Her knowledge of the dagger seems pretty extensive. So I think that if the dagger is how she found out about Rumple name, it isn’t all she found out.

In Manhattan, are you sure Cora called it the Kris dagger and not the cursed dagger? Too bad this episode isn’t on DVD so we could check the subtitles. Anyway, there are a lot of things Cora knows about Rumple, his son, his dagger, and the specifics of the curse that are very specific. If she and Rumple were lovers, as the spoilers suggest, perhaps she charmed the Dark One into giving up his secrets, which was why Rumple was so careful not to repeat the same mistake with Belle. In Skin Deep, Rumple said something close to, “Perhaps you just want to learn the monster’s weaknesses!” which makes me think Cora did just that. 💡

Snow’s kingdom is the only option. Look at this way: Cora has a child, Regina. King George and his wife do not, instead they take Prince James (who is much younger than Regina and is the same age as Snow). Until Prince James, George’s kingdom had no heir for Cora to wed Regina off to, and by the time they got James, Regina was too old to marry the heir.

The other option is that Cora was married to King George at one point. She had Regina, and guessed Rumple’s name, thus keeping the child. She then willingly took the poison to become barren and so escape giving another child to Rumple. However, King George wanted a boy for an heir, and so divorced Cora and adopted Prince James. Thus, Cora remarried Henry Sr. and made sure Regina married another king, Leopold, since she believed Regina had been denied her birth-right to rule by King George, Regina’s father.

In two weeks, Slurpeez, one of us will finally be right 🙂
The one thing about your theory I’m not sold on totally is the “guessing of the name.” Rumple has an odd habit of introducing himself to people, and it wouldn’t explain how Cora found out about the power of the dagger.

Yes, we’ll see. Honestly, I’m sure I’ll be happy with whatever outcome, because Adam and Eddy are so clever with the plot.

In the traditional tale of Rumplestiltskin, the miller’s daughter had to guess the imp’s name to keep her first-born child. The title of this episode suggests the plot will at least follow that direction. Since Rumple has been around for centuries, it’s entirely possible that his name was lost to history by the time he met Cora. All of his contemporaries would have been dead for about 200 years (except for Smee and Hook, who were in a different realm). It’s possible that Rumple was only known as the “Dark One” when he introduced himself to Cora, and so she had to guess his name. That is why Cora scribbled his name in the back of her spell book. In 2×2, We Are Both, Regina reads the name in her mother’s book and summons Rumple by his name, after which he introduces himself to her. By the time Rumple meets Cinderella, Prince Charming, and Snow White, his real name was in wide circulation again.

I wonder if the thing Henry does that he’s never done before is as simple as calling Rumple “Grandpa” for the first time.

That could definitely be the case, like the first time Henry called Emma “Mom” in the S1 finale.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Eddy and Adam drew upon literature for inspiration, plus Robert Carlyle is thoroughly Scottish. According to Wikipedia, William Shakespeare himself “borrowed” this story of Macbeth from Holinshed’s Chronicles, a popular history of the British Isles known to Shakespeare and his contemporaries.

So much for avoiding double threads 😉

Ok – so now I’m thinking that instead of being an EF flashback, perhaps this will be a dream or memory that amnesia Belle has just before she remembers everything. Please, writers, if you read this, make Belle all better!

Still doesn’t answer the question why take over Snow’s Kingdom? ❓

That’s only a theory at this point; we don’t know if anyone sought to take over Snow’s kingdom other than Regina after she murdered Snow’s father, King Leopold. He had a separate, adjacent kingdom to that of King George. The two kingdoms of Leopold and George were later united by the marriage of Snow White and Prince Charming.

Henry Sr, believed to be Regina’s father, may never have been a royal or had a kingdom. Cora may have been married to someone else first, like King George, keeping him as a candidate for Regina’s birth father. The king may have divorced her later, and Cora married Henry Sr, a wealthy landowner with an estate.

I still think George and Cora were married and then later divorced.
