This is…the most random returning guest star for the 100th Episode yet…

I think it makes sense when one considers the possibility that only villains are returning in droves from the Underworld.

The question is are all the writers singing from the same hymn sheet?

I think they are (at least when it comes to major story arcs of the plot and main characters). For example, it’s well known that the writers all come together for “writers’ boot camp” at the end of each season to plan out and formulate a general roadmap for each season. While they may not know they exact details for each episode, they do lay out when certain big plot points will happen according to a time-frame. For example, the writers likely decided sometime at the end of S3 that Emma would be going dark by the end of S4. They had to find a way to do it. They also knew they’d be introducing the concept of the Author in S4 and the concept of the Sorcerer in S5. Next, they probably sketched out the major plot points for S5 at the end of S4. For example, A&E hinted before S5A even started that S5B would “be hell” which correctly hinted at the Underworld coming to SB.

The one in which a portal to the Underworld is opened in SB.

All the villains are back (at least for one episode)! So a portal to the Underworld must’ve indeed opened in SB’s cemetery. I have a feeling the Souls of the Departed will be put back by the end of the 1-2 episodes it takes to close the portal. Logistically, I doubt the actors who play Peter Pan and Cora would stick around again for an entire half season.

Let’s all light a candle for the yellow bug. I have a feeling it’ll be okay in the end. Emma will revive it with her magic or something. I’m pretty sure the writers won’t ruin it for good, because to them, the bug stands for Emma herself, not just Swanfire.

But it felt slightly rushed…Rumple saves Belle from a bear and bam, he’s the hero Emma needs? I love that he did and was BUT hold the phone–they note at the end that the town is full of heroes (like, I dunno, Belle, who is right there in the room?) and so it seems a little off.

It was very rushed, but it makes “sense” when one considers what Emma has said about Rumple in previous episodes. I wrote about this in the Rumple the hero thread.

So Vortigan really was the Dark One we saw in Dreamcatcher. How does Nimue play into this, then?

In legend, I don’t think there is a link between Nimue and Vortigan (other than both knowing Merlin). Vortigan was a glorified warlord who knew Merlin as the boy who predicted why Vortigan was unable to construct a castle. Nimue was the woman Merlin loved, but I think that is an entirely different legend.

In OUAT,  I’m not exactly sure how these three tie together. Possibly Vortigan is Merlin’s rival. Merlin accused the dark one (probably Vortigan) of destroying the only woman he’d ever loved (i.e. Nimue). At the time, some people thought Nimue must the dark one behind the mask. However, in 5×6, Merlin’s voicemail says that Nimue is now the only one who can destroy the darkness. So that calls into question Nimue being the dark one if she can still help.

Lancelot may know where to find Nimue, since she is often called the Lady of the Lake. In 2×3, Lancelot said his mother had raised him by the lake. Might Nimue be Lancelot’s mother?

Is Vortigan the second Dark One after killing Nimue like I theorized earlier?

    Could be.

Or does Nimue really have nothing to do with the darkness, against all expectations…?

Doubtful. I think Nimue is Merlin’s downfall. In one legend, Merlin becomes infatuated with her, but she refuses to return his love until he shares all of his magical secrets with her. Having the gift of foresight, Merlin foresees she is trouble, but he is powerless to stop it. He simply continues to teach her his magic, until one day, she lures him to a cave and/or traps him in a tree (according to different versions). I guess the writers of OUAT have made Vortigan a stand-in for Nimue entrapping Merlin, so maybe, but there is probably some twist.

Also, remember Hook enchanting his hook to be able to rip out a heart in 5×1 (he’d intended to remove Zelena’s heart to control her, but she outwitted him). So, that would mean his hook is still capable of removing a heart. While it could just be a red herring,  it could be Checkov’s hook…

    1. There’s a large amount of crisscrossing of religious symbolism going on here. On the one hand, there are crosses everywhere. On the other hand the synopsis reveals the spark of life is Prometheus’ flame. While I expect a dose of Christian symbolism due to Arthurian legend being set in medieval Christian Europe, it strikes me as odd to see a cross on the base of what what is presumably a pagan alter to the Greek god.

    2. Both the original Dark One and present-day Merlin are dressed in black and have crosses on their belt buckles. Contrast that with earlier pictures of Merlin in white when he is with Nimue.

    3. Whatever Nimue’s pendant symbolizes, I’m guessing it’s not a good thing. In Arthurian legend, Nimue is Merlin’s downfall. Hence, the FLOWERS OF DOOM.

    4. Snow’s dress is lovely.
