Rather than starting a new thread, this seems like a good place to keep track of any mention made of Excalibur and the dagger (feel free to add to it):

    From 4×22:

The Apprentice: Long before… Your stories began… The sorcerer battled the darkness. He was able to keep it from consuming the realms. He tethered it to a human soul that could be controlled with a dagger. The Dark One. The sorcerer is the only one with the power to destroy the darkness once and for all before it destroys everything. … He’s far, far from here. Find him. His name is… Merlin. You must… Stop… The darkness. Find… Merlin.

So I wonder if Excalibur was the sword that Merlin originally used to battle the darkness. Perhaps Merlin broke the blade and tethered the darkness to the tip of it, becoming the dark one dagger.

    From 5×1:

    Merlin: Don’t.
    Young Emma: I’m sorry.
Merlin: I wasn’t talking about the candy bar, Emma.
Young Emma: How do you know my name?
Merlin: I know many things. And I’m here to tell you, don’t do it.
    Young Emma: I don’t understand.
Merlin: When you do something that you’re not supposed to do, even if you do it for the right reasons, bad things will happen, Emma. Bad things.
Merlin: One day, you will have the opportunity to remove Excalibur from its stone, but you must not. Leave the sword alone.

Lancelot: Where’s the rest of it?
Arthur: This is all there is.
Percival: How can you take the throne with half the sword? What will you tell the people?
Arthur: Nothing. All they need know is they have a king. In the meantime, we have a new quest to begin. We must make Excalibur whole!

    From 5×2:

Guinevere: These strangers frighten me, Arthur.
Arthur: You know Merlin’s prophecy as well as I do. They’re meant to be here.
Guinevere: Merlin tells us what happens, but he doesn’t tell us how. Percival… is dead. Who knows what other trouble they’ll bring?
Arthur: They’re here to destroy the Dark One. That won’t be easy. But helping them may be the only way I’ll ever get my hands on that monster’s dagger. Guinevere, if I don’t make Excalibur whole again, we’ll lose everything we worked so hard to build.

HeadRumple: As long as the dark ones existed, one thing has always held us back. The pull of the family we were so desperate to protect. The friendships that make it impossible to forget who we used to be. The magic that threatens to undo our most evil deeds. And, worst of all… The love that refuses to give up on us. You see, no matter how hard we try, we can’t escape the reach of the light. But, Emma Swan, you can change that. That’s why you brought that sword here. You can do what no Dark One before you has ever done. You can make that weapon whole again and use it to snuff out the light… forever.
(Emma attempts to pull the sword from the stone and is blasted back.)
HeadRumple: Did you really think it would be that simple, dearie? If you want that sword, you’re gonna have to pay the price.

    From 5×3:

(Emma goes to swing the dwarf axe at the Stone of Destiny which is holding Excalibur.)
HeadRumple: A dwarf axe. Now, that’s a creative path to failure.
Emma: Dwarf axes cut through everything.
HeadRumple: Nothing cuts through magic. Except maybe a kiss. Have you thought about kissing it out? You’re running out of options, deary. You see, we want you to, uh, snuff out the light. So, we need a hero to pull Excalibur from the stone. Now… and let’s face facts that’s not gonna be you. So, why don’t you stop messing around and go get the hero we need? Oh, and, uh, you and I both know who that is.

Mr. Gold: What do you want from me? You are the Dark One now, not me.
Emma: That’s right. You are not dark. You are also not light. You are nothing. Your heart is a blank slate. And that, little man, makes you useful. Because now I can make you into the last thing you ever thought you would be. A hero. And not just any hero. The purest who’s ever lived. and then… and then I have a job for you.

    5×4:

Arthur: Look around. Someday this village, will be the great kingdom of Camelot, and I will be King.
Guinevere: ( Laughs ) You have some very strange dreams.
Arthur: But they’re not just dreams. …Can I trust you with a secret? This tree … a man is trapped inside of it. A great sorcerer known as Merlin. He spoke to me one night. He gave me a prophecy. Told me I would pull a sword from a stone and become King of Camelot.
    Guinevere: King Arthur?
Arthur: Yes. And you will be Queen Guinevere.

Arthur: …. Now that you’re a member of the Round Table, it’s time to share Camelot’s greatest secret. ( Shows David Excalibur ) The sword that made me king is broken. For years, I’ve hunted its missing piece… Something known as the dagger of the dark one.
David: ( Looks taken aback ) I’ve heard tales of it.
Arthur: Well, I think you’re the man to help me find it. After all, you’re the only one who needs it as bad as I. You’re desperate to destroy the power of the Dark One.
David: Only Merlin can do that.
Arthur: Perhaps. Perhaps not. No one knows what Merlin really wants, but with that dagger, we wouldn’t need Merlin. I could reforge Excalibur into the sword it once was with the power to destroy the darkness once and for all. Can you help me in this quest?

Arthur: First you try and steal my wife, and now you want to deny me the dagger after all I’ve done for you!
Snow: Please don’t hurt him! ( Hands Arthur the dagger ) Here.
Arthur: I have waited a lifetime for this. Now I control your daughter. I can command her to reunite the sword and free Merlin. Excalibur’s blade will be the last thing he sees before I use it to run him through. Then I will use the blade to snuff out the darkness once and for all. I can become what no one thought I could… The greatest king in all the realms. Dark One, I command you to appear! I said I command you!
Snow: She’s not coming. Arthur: Why? What have you done to the dagger?
    Snow: The dagger’s not real….
Arthur: You betrayed me. You broke the sacred trust of the Round Table.
David: You tried to trick me with a catchy title and a comfy chair.
Arthur: David, you deserved a seat at my table. Every choice I’ve made is for the good of Camelot! I’m trying to destroy the darkness!

David: Finally a blade that can stand up to Granny’s meatloaf.
Snow: So, now what do we do with it?
David: Well, Arthur wanted to reunite it with the dagger and use it for evil. But that doesn’t mean that it couldn’t also be used for good.
    Snow: Like helping Emma.

Rumplestiltskin: ( to Guinevere ) Good girl! But be careful. Love is a weapon, dearie. The most dangerous weapon of all, which means the pain you should worry about isn’t the kind inflicted by a broken sword, but the kind that comes, from a broken heart.

Guinevere: Yes! I wanted you back! To be the man I loved! My King. And now I realize I don’t want any of it. Not unless it’s real.
Arthur: It can be. You can have me back. You can have it all. I just need the dagger. Tell me where the vault is!
Guinevere: Don’t you understand?! You have to make a choice! Stop trying to mend that sword, or your marriage and your kingdom will be broken forever.
Arthur: And what if I can’t?
Guinevere: Then I’ll follow my heart to where it belongs.

Mr. Gold: I remember how the darkness feels. But you don’t have to give in to it. You just… You could just set me free.
Emma: The only one who can get me that sword is you.
Mr. Gold: I can’t be the hero you want.
Emma: Of course you can. You’re like a dull knife sitting in a drawer.

    From 5×5:

Emma: … Arthur has them under some kind of spell. He wants them to bring him the dagger. He wants to reunite it with Excalibur.
    Regina: Unite it?
Emma: It was once one blade. It was broken in half a long, long time ago.
Regina: What happens when they’re together?
Emma: He wants to kill Merlin with it. I don’t have to tell you how bad that would be for all of us.
Regina: How do you know this? How do I know this isn’t the darkness in you rearing its head?
Emma: It’s true. We don’t have a lot of time. Arthur’s expecting them soon.

Emma: You’re not going anywhere until you get me my sword.
Mr. Gold: Well, you have so much power. W-w-why do you need Excalibur?
Emma: Tell me, when you were the Dark One, did you advertise your plans?
Mr. Gold: My plans were always hidden. But my reasons were not. Every time I used magic, I told myself it was all for my son… to protect him.
    Emma: How noble.
Mr. Gold: Despite my best intentions… I still lost him.
Emma: I’m stronger than you were.
Mr. Gold: Well, that… that really doesn’t matter. The more you justify what you’re doing, the more you push them away. And take it from me… you will always lose the ones you love the most.

Merlin: I’ve been waiting for you… Emma. And you… The boy who would be king. My great hope. How you’ve disappointed me.
Arthur: I disappointed you? You gave me false prophecies. Sent me on an impossible quest! You ruined my life!
Merlin: Put it away, Arthur. We both know that broken sword can’t hurt me.
    Arthur: This is not finished.

    From Arthur in 5×5:

    Arthur: She had Excalibur?
Hook: Trapped in a stone in her basement.
Arthur: Well, then we need to get it back at once. It would be disastrous if the Dark One took possession of it.
Hook: That have anything to do with its striking resemblance to the Dark One dagger? King Arthur: How do you know about the dagger?
Hook: I’ve spent a lifetime trying to end the Dark One’s existence. I know much about the dagger. What I don’t know about is your blade. Care to enlighten us?
Arthur: Yes. There’s a reason they resemble each other. They were forged as one weapon and then broken in two. I’ve spent years trying to reunite them.
Snow That’s why you were so interested in the dagger when you arrived.
Arthur: I apologize for not telling you sooner, but I had to make sure I could trust you. The restored weapon has great power. It can eradicate all dark magic forever.
    David: That’s a good thing.
Arthur: Of course. But in the wrong hands, it can also destroy all light magic.
Hook: That’s her plan. To snuff out the Light forever.
Emma: What happened in Camelot? How did Emma fall so far?

    From 5×6:

Merlin: What’s important is… do you remember what I said?
Emma: You said something about Excalibur, and you told me…
Merlin: …that one day, you would have the opportunity to remove Excalibur from its stone.
Emma: Well, I hate to burst your bubble. Someone beat me to it.
Merlin: Perhaps, but the sword will return to whence it came. And now that the darkness is within you, it’s more important than ever that you heed the rest of my warning. Leave Excalibur alone. The fate of everyone that you love rests upon it.

Mr. Gold: Now, you may have Excalibur, but you’ve made one mistake in all of this… one terrible mistake. You’ve turned me into a hero.
Emma: There are heroes all over this town, and none of them have been able to stop me yet.
Mr. Gold: Well, that’s because none of them… are me.

Rumple managed to pull Excalibur from the stone and is now a hero. Were you surprised? Did you think he could do it? And now that he’s a hero by virtue of said sword pulling, can he stop Emma?

I wasn’t surprised that Gold was able to remove the sword from the stone. Emma did say that Mr. Gold was the only one who could get her that sword. She said his heart is now a blank slate, making him not just any hero, but the purest hero who has ever lived. Emma also compared Gold to a dull knife sitting in a drawer. Now that he’s been sharpened, I think he does pose a real threat to the dark one. Even though he lacks magical ability, he still has centuries’ worth of knowledge and experience of living as the dark one. Gold said he knows Emma better than she knows herself, so I think he’ll be able to predict and uncover Emma’s plot.

In context, it seems to be about the sword. But it tells us nothing about what the sword is, or why it leads to bad consequences.

I agree that Merlin’s warning doesn’t tell us the answer to the why question. (I am a bit surprised that Gold didn’t know more about why Emma wanted Excalibur, seeing how he was the dark one for centuries). Reading between the lines, perhaps Merlin’s warning has something to do with Excalibur’s origin and with Nimue. Merlin said that the dark one had destroyed the one woman he’d ever loved, leading many to think the woman Merlin loved is the first dark one. Yet, Merlin also said in 5×6 that Nimue is the only person who could help them defeat the darkness. We also have what the apprentice said about Merlin and the dagger in 4×22 about the sorcerer tethering the darkness to a human soul via the dagger, which we know was once part of Excalibur. Now we just need to know who forged Excalibur. I guess we’ll find out more next week.

What is Emma’s plan and how does it involve using Merlin’s magic?

So, in reply to my own question, I think Emma’s plan is obviously to use the apprentice’s wand to re-forge Excalibur. Perhaps Emma thinks she can use it for good, although Merlin did warn that doing so even for good reasons would lead to bad consequences.

This is actually the more interesting part of the conversation for me. So anyone who wields Merlin’s magic dies? Does that mean that whatever plan Emma has cooked up–I guess reuniting the dagger and Excalibur–will single her death? And Emma seems to know this.

Yes, she does. Yet, Emma is immortal, so in theory, she wouldn’t even have to worry about possibly dying from reuniting Excalibur. (Unless Excalibur is the exception, much like the dagger). So why does Emma need Zelena’s help? Is Emma trying to lure Zelena to her death? Zelena did bring up killing Neal again. Maybe Emma is trying to get revenge. (Unlikely, but Zelena did bring it up).

EMMA AND MERLIN EMBARK ON A PERILOUS QUEST TO RETRIEVE PROMETHEUS’ FIRE FROM THE BIRTHPLACE OF DARK MAGIC

So the darkness was born in the place where the “sacred spark” is found. Must be a creation and fall-from-grace story borrowed from Greek mythology. I know that Promethus is credited as the creator of humankind who gave humanity fire. What went wrong for the darkness to be born?

In Camelot, Merlin spearheads a mission to reunite the dagger with Excalibur so he can use the weapon to save Emma from the darkness threatening her soul…Meanwhile, Merlin brings Emma along on a journey to confront his ancient nemesis and retrieve the sacred spark he’ll need to reforge Excalibur.

So what I’m getting from this Camelot flashback is that Promethus’ fire is necessary to re-forge the blade. I wonder who originally created Excalibur. Maybe Prometheus himself? I’ve been playing around with a theory that whoever wields a whole, intact Excalibur has power over Merlin the way whoever has the dagger has power over the dark one. Maybe Promethus decided to check Merlin’s power by tying light magic to the original sword, lest Merlin be as powerful as the gods.

Both parties are tested, but one suffers a blow that could derail the entire operation.

Sounds like Merlin is the one dealt a blow by the first Dark One, seeing how Emma as the dark one is impervious to harm. I’m guessing Merlin gets struck by Excalibur, which is said to be able to harm and even kill him.

In a flashback to long before the Age of Arthur, young Merlin finds purpose after he is blessed with magic and immortality,

Blessed by whom? The Greek gods?

According to at least one legend by Geoffrey of Monmouth, Merlin was born of a nun and of the devil (or an incubus). “Merlin is a paradox, he was the son of the devil, yet he was the servant of God.” And who do we think might be coming to OUAT? Hades. If Hades can be considered the devil (a conflation of pagan and Christian beliefs), then I wonder if Merlin will turn out to be the son of Hades in OUAT.

but when he falls in love with a young refugee named Nimue, everything changes for Merlin, as their romance starts a chain of events that touches every one of our present day heroes

Yeah, to echo what RG wrote: Flowers of DOOM!

Yes but Arthur says the bit about hearts beating as one after he magic sand roofied her, so that part is clearly a lie on Arthur’s part. We know their hearts don’t really beat as one metaphorically since Gwen was seconds from leaving.

I know it’s a false parallel, because Arthur is one shady dude. I was wondering if the sands of Avalon could come into play again. Could a person be made to appear alive if his or heart were used for the curse? I’m probably overthinking this.

If anything, the writers might go for Gwen and Lance’s heart really beating as one.

    Most likely.

Merlin tethered the darkness to the dagger, but who made Excalibur? 5×7 synopsis is starting to make me wonder if it was the Greek god Prometheus.

Thought of the day. So after pondering Broken Kingdom (since this week’s episode was so dull), this stood out.

    From 5×4:

Guinevere: Yes! I wanted you back! To be the man I loved! My King. And now I realize I don’t want any of it. Not unless it’s real.
Arthur: It can be. You can have me back. You can have it all. I just need the dagger. Tell me where the vault is!
Guinevere: Don’t you understand?! You have to make a choice! Stop trying to mend that sword, or your marriage and your kingdom will be broken forever.
Arthur: And what if I can’t?
Guinevere: Then I’ll follow my heart to where it belongs.

Possible foreshadowing? Maybe…if the flowers of doom (to borrow RG’s phrase) mean anything. *yes, I’m choosing to think so until shown otherwise*

Talking about the broken sword and broken hearts brings to mind something Rumple said in 5×4:

Rumplestiltskin: ( to Guinevere ) Good girl! But be careful. Love is a weapon, dearie. The most dangerous weapon of all, which means the pain you should worry about isn’t the kind inflicted by a broken sword, but the kind that comes, from a broken heart.

Also, there was something that Arthur said at the end of 5×4 that caught my attention:

    Guinevere: I love him [Arthur].
Lancelot: No. It’s not real. He must have used the sands of Avalon on you. Guinevere, we can break this spell.
Guinevere: Not interested. Take this traitor to the dungeon where he belongs. ( A couple of guards come forward and arrest Lancelot and he watches in sadness as Guinevere kisses Arthur, as he is escorted out of the building. )
Arthur: ( Turns to face Mary Margaret and David ) You’re not the only couple with hearts that beat as one .

So, interesting that Arthur/Gwen are being compared to Snow/Charming. Maybe things aren’t quite what they appear?

Do we actually know that Excalibur is what we think it is/does what we think it does? Mostly the information is from Merlin, Arthur, Emma, and Clippit!Rumple. None of these are reliable narrators — even Merlin, who so far appears to be a good guy, clearly has his own agenda, and isn’t sharing it.

While we don’t know exactly what Merlin’s agenda is, I think he can be trusted. If he said not to pull out the sword or else bad things would happen, then Emma probably would’ve been better off leaving it alone.
