CHARMING KNOWS WHO EMMA’S HEART LONGS FOR.
After their adventures in Echo Cave and Hook’s selfless confession, have you noticed that Charming hasn’t been on his case? In 3×04 and 3×05 the thought of Hook even breathing next to Emma had him on edge, but even more than the moment he saved him, Charming saw Hook’s heart after the confession. He saw the look in his eyes that screamed, this is the hardest thing I’ve ever done but if it’s for Emma’s happiness then it’s all worth it. Because of the fact that Hook went first, even before him and his wife, Charming was able to see that Hook’s intentions with Emma were always honorable: he wanted to take care of her, adore her, and put her first, just as he does with Snow.
Charming and Emma have talked about Hook’s brother, and while we have absolutely no idea how this conversation came to be, it only matters that it happened. And maybe Emma brought it up, maybe Snow, but it’s bound to mean to something.
Emma then mentions Hook to Charming at the docks. Charming and Hook have a very similar trait in which they’re perceptive. Because of these little moments, and the fact that Emma wasn’t filled with utmost glee when the news broke of Neal being alive, he must’ve understood that she didn’t want to reconcile with him. As I’ve said numerous times before, he wasn’t pushing Emma towards Neal but rather trying his hardest to get her to admit her heart’s desire (which she somewhat did by bringing Hook into the conversation).
Fundamentally, Emma was surprised to see Charming at the docks, so how on earth did he know she’d be there? Of all the places: their loft, the station, why the docks? As I said above, he’s exceptionally perceptive. This wasn’t coincidental. She didn’t go to the place where they’d all parted just because she missed the scent of salt. Despite the minimal interactions, Charming without a doubt understands his daughter because of how alike they are. Just as the Troll Bridge was his and Snow’s place, the docks can be seen as Hook and Emma’s. Somewhere along the way of trying to be her father and friend, he’s figured this all out.
Later, Charming was extremely concerned for Hook when he slid on the floor, he quickly made sure to offer a helping hand then check in on him while Tink did her thing. Though it’s evident that he now respects Hook for everything he’s done, I’m positive he wouldn’t have been as concerned for his safety had he not known about Emma’s feelings as well. His interactions with Neal are rarely ever present and when they are, they lack chemistry – note, I’m not talking about Josh Dallas and Michael Raymond-James but rather Charming and Neal – they’re two men who honestly wouldn’t get along.
As different as Hook and Charming are, they’re both fighters, and fighting honorably is something they both continuously emphasize. They’re fueled by love; they’d go to the ends of the earth and back for those they care for. Plus that pat on the back? Brothers. They’ve legitimately begun to act like family. I always felt that for Charming to accept someone other than familiar people, it had to be a prodigious step. We’ve never seen him as close to someone before because even amongst the dwarves he’s always sort of been left out, but with Hook, despite their bickering, they’ve essentially become friends.
Point being, Charming knows who his daughter’s heart longs for, and he approves because he sees the utmost honorable pride in Hook’s expressions when he’s fighting for Emma’s happiness. I feel as though this friendship and acceptance began when he realized that Hook’s not only right for his daughter, but getting to know him would be important for his relationship with Emma as well.
Daddy’s approval will someday mean the world, and she’s got it.
