Something so awesome about Emma’s arc this season, besides the beautiful growth she has shown and how much more open and vulnerable she is willing to be, is the fact that for the first time in her life, she’s accepted that she needs to live rather than survive, and from that has come her finally being able to make her own choices about her life instead of having things decided for her by others, which has been happening for her whole life. She finally is able to make active decisions instead of someone else choosing for her or feeling like she can’t do things because she needs to protect herself.

And what choices does she make?

    (just to name a couple).

A lot of voices have a lot of things to say about Captain Swan, despite Hook clearly stating that Emma’s decision about their relationship is just as important as his.

But these are the choices she made. Newly healing from the issues in her past, she chooses that what she wants to do with her time is go out with Killian, become intimate with Killian, let Killian inside her walls. How she plans to live is to explore her relationship with Killian, to be open to the casual intimacy we saw in this week’s episode, and most importantly, to share with him a part of her that has been closed off to nearly everyone else for her entire life.

Just as I wrote about here, Emma wants someone to share her life with. She wants the intimacy they have or she’d still be pushing him away. Every time they have ever kissed, Emma had a choice, and she chose to kiss him instead of walk away or tell him no like she did with Graham. She smiles as he kisses her cheek, smiles when she talks about how well their date went.

Emma is happy, and it’s because for once, she’s finally in control of her own life and making her own choices, and that includes her relationship with Killian. She’s happy because, for once, she trusts someone and feels she can lean on them when she wants to (not that she needs someone, but it’s nice to have someone). And I never want happy Emma to go away. Ever.

Totally agree with this review of Breaking Glass:

    Overview:
In Storybrooke, Emma and Regina form a reluctant team to find Elsa and the Snow Queen. In Boston, 1998, runaway Emma Swan makes friends with a girl who seems to be in a very similar situation to her own.

    Thoughts and Discussion:
As a huge fan of Emma Swan, I have to admit that I found this episode really quite difficult to watch. The first viewing left me confused and troubled … or, dare I say vexed?
Who was this Emma Swan I was watching? Why was she acting like the proverbial kicked dog, slavishly looking for approval and acceptance from the abusive master? Where was her characteristic spunk and gumption? The witty comeback or pointed rejoinder? Emma Swan is no one’s chump. Well, not usually…
And then I watched it again and this is what I got.
Emma Swan is better than Regina Mills
She just is and this episode proves it. With re-watching, I found my perception and interpretation of this episode changed dramatically. Parts of it still get the blood boiling, for sure, but the realisation that this episode is not about Emma AND Regina but is in fact ALL ABOUT EMMA makes everything more understandable.

Okay. Emma and Elsa look through boxes of files for information on the Snow Queen. Elsa is frustrated she favours confrontation as the way to find her sister. Emma favours caution. They don’t know enough to go in half-cocked; Snowy seems to know them both while they don’t remember her – they have to be careful. They find some photographs. They are pictures taken of Emma and Henry when Regina had her under surveillance. They bring back happy memories for Emma – the first time she walked Henry to school, the first time they got hot cocoa together. But there is also a picture of Emma talking (arguing with?) Sarah Fisher, aka the Snow Queen. Emma has no memory of the incident. The pictures also remind Emma of a time when she and Regina “hated each other”
Elsa: Well it seems like you’ve come a long way since then
Emma: yeah, well, looks like we’re right back at it. Just wish I could fix it.”
[Just a side note – I’m not sure how Elsa is equipped to make that observation. Reggie has been sulking in her vault for the entire time she’s been out of the urn and on the odd occasion she has witnessed Regina in action, she’s done nothing that would indicate that she even liked Emma let alone suggest any level of ‘improvement’.]
Emma is not so sure “I screwed her over and once you screw someone over there is no going back.”

Okay – so this is one of those previously mentioned moments that make the blood boil. Emma didn’t ‘screw Regina over’. It’s a not even a ‘mistake’ or an ‘accident’ that Marion came back – it’s just one of those things that happen. In life the cards don’t always fall your way and that’s just the way it is – playing the blame and victim game is just not necessary. Hearing Emma say she screwed Regina over is nauseating; If only they’d added “Regina believes…” as a prefix to the sentence… But I’ll come back to this in a little while.

Anyway, finding the photograph spawns a visit to Regina to see if she knows anything about it, which leads to the two of them kind-of teaming up to find the Snow Queen. From the outset, Regina’s interactions with Emma are negative, bordering on abusive.

Emma is friendly, encouraging and complementary towards Regina (some might even say submissive). She offers her assistance and her support and demonstrates a truly forgiving heart: “Despite everything (*) you’ve done a lot for me Regina (**), so yeah, you’ve got my back and I want you to know that I have yours.”

(*casting a curse that separated her from her family and caused her to be raised an orphan, stalking her, invading her privacy, trying to prevent her and Henry forming a relationship, trying to kill her and her parents on numerous occasions… I could go on.)

(**shared custody of Henry, assisted with Greg, Tamara, Pan and Zelena, taught her some magic, and cooked some lasagna… Not exactly what I would call balance scales.)

Regina on the other hand, is rude, dismissive, derogatory, self-involved, self-pitying, selfish and short-sighted – “Miss Swan, one thing is abundantly clear. You’ve never had my back and you never will.” Really? She’s got a short memory too.

This pattern repeats itself until even Emma begins to get fed up with Regina’s attitude.

They take on Snowy’s Ice Warrior and are only able to defeat it when they join forces.

Emma discovers that Regina lied about her knowledge of Sidney.

And, even after being kicked down so many times, Emma goes back to see Regina yet again. She is meek and takes the blame for everything that has happened since Marion’s return on her own shoulders – Look, in all honestly, I don’t think the scene is well written – It actually doesn’t make much sense and the writer is obviously trying to force the parallel with Lily/young Emma but it doesn’t quite work – I’ll come back to this later too.

The only concession Emma gets to her assumption that her and Regina could perhaps be friends is that Regina no longer wants to kill her. Wow. Big of her.

Like I said before, the Emma and Regina portions bothered me tremendously until I watched it through again a couple of times. And then I noticed the keys to understanding this episode don’t come with Regina. They come from Emma.
Key 1 – The pictures of Henry
Key 2 – The memories of Lily
Key 3 – Her mood, afterwards at the sheriff’s station

The pictures of Henry make her happy. They also remind her of how much she’s gained since coming to Storybrooke – her son, her parents, a brother, and a boyfriend … a home. It is a marked contrast to her former life – Emma Swan is a lucky woman. But those photographs were taken for a conniving Regina Mills, so they also remind Emma of a time when Regina was her out and out enemy. Emma has grown a lot since then; she thought Regina had too but circumstances have conspired to make things difficult once more. Emma does not want to return to the days of unproductive enmity between herself and Regina. It would not be kind to Henry, it would not be good for the town, she has bigger problems to worry about and, quite frankly, she has better things to do with her time than re-engage in hostilities with Regina Mills. This is where Emma shows her quality; she could continue to just ignore and be ignored, but she remembers an experience from her past and it informs her decision to be the bigger person and make the effort to try and smooth things out between herself and Regina.

That past experience that is so lively in her mind comes from a time when she first attempted to run away from her miserable life in a group home. As Emma inexpertly attempts shoplifting, she is befriended by a similarly aged girl called Lily. Emma jumps to some conclusions about Lily’s situation and Lily does not correct her – Lily feels alienated from her family, so what is the harm in letting her new friend think that she too is a refugee from the foster system. The girls break into an empty lakeside mansion (though one suspects that Lily’s family are the actual owners) and have an evening of videogames, binge-eating junk food and sharing secrets. Lily has a star-shaped scar on her wrist; she likes to pretend that it makes her unique and special (like Harry Potter). Lily draws a star on Emma’s wrist to show that she’s special too. In the way fourteen year old girls do, they bond quickly. “Let’s promise to stay friends, no matter what. There won’t be anything we can’t come back from”. Until Lily’s dad finds them and asks her to come home. Emma feels betrayed. She can’t understand how anyone who has everything she ever dreamed of – parents and a home – could ever want to leave. Emma rubs off her faux scar as she walks away, never to see Lily again. Back to the foster home for you missy. The important thing about this memory is the fact that Emma regrets that she broke her promise to be friends forever, that she screwed her friend over. She now realises that a lonely kid is a lonely kid regardless of the situation and that she was wrong to dismiss Lily’s pain just because of her naïve preconceptions of what a family is. With hindsight, Emma is able to put herself in Lily’s shoes and see it from Lily’s perspective and she’s determined not to make that same mistake again. Which is, of course why she tries so hard with Regina all episode – she, who is so happy, who has everything, puts herself in Regina’s shoes and is able to make the offer sympathy and friendship.

One of my favourite quotes from Buffy the Vampire Slayer goes: “To forgive is an act of compassion, Buffy. It’s not done because people deserve it. It’s done because they need it.” And I think that this is really quite applicable to Emma and Regina too. Regina has done a lot of bad stuff to Emma that could fuel hatred for eternity. One of the main premises of OUAT is that vengeance isn’t the answer. Emma knows this. She is able to look at her life and all the good things she’s got now, and put the past in the past. Does it still hurt? You bet. But is she going to let it define her life? No *flocking* way. She’s done that for long enough. Time to move on. And this is why Emma is better than Regina.

But there’s one last element to this perspective – at the end of the episode Emma is in the sheriff’s office. At first glance you think she’s just a bit emotional from remembering the past, but then Killian comes in and judges her mood as vexed. Killian has been set up as someone who can read Emma well. He’s a trustworthy judge here. Vexed; it’s an old fashioned word that means annoyed, angry, irritated, provoked, upset or aggrieved. And so we realise that this has been a hard evening for Emma. It’s not easy putting the past in its place. Regina is not easy to like, Regina is not easy to get along with. It has not been pleasant, allowing herself to bear the brunt of Regina’s barbs and taunts. Would Emma have loved to have told Regina off? Of course she would have! But that was not the purpose of the exercise. What Emma does achieve is a truce in hostilities and, more importantly, an ally who can be relied on in times of crisis.

    Parallels:
    Emma/Lily
At first, I found this parallel really problematic. It was implying a level of intimacy and friendship that never existed between Regina and Emma. And then you realise that this not really about Regina – it, like the whole episode is about Emma and It only works when you realise that in the parallel, Emma is identifying with Lily, not her younger self.
In a nutshell – Lily and Emma form a friendship that is based on their mutual similarities – both are runaways, lonely, unloved and (Emma thinks) are fugitives from the foster system. They pledge life-long friendship. Emma cuts Lily when she finds out that Lily does in fact have a family who love her. Emma feels betrayed by Lily. Later, Emma regrets the action and wishes she had not been so brutal to her friend. She feels that she screwed Lily over and that once you screw someone over there is no going back.
Regina and Emma are friends (of sorts), it is bases on their mutual similarities – both are mothers to Henry, they both have magical abilities and Emma adds that they both know the feeling of rejection like no one else. Regina cuts Emma when Marion is bought back from the past. She feels betrayed by Emma. Regina feels no regret of her actions and Emma forces the reconciliation because of her identification with Lily.

So again, the parallel is more proof of why Emma Swan is better than Regina Mills. Emma is the one who has learnt from her mistakes and is capable from seeing things from another’s perspective. Emma is prepared to be the bigger person and put past hurts aside for the good of everyone, Regina included.

A parallel of three relationships – Swan Queen/ Snowing/Captain Swan

We do get to see three relationship on show here and it’s difficult not to contrast them against one another.
Swan Queen – The relationship between Regina and Emma is not a particularly good one. Even if they are technically “friends” now, it’s very unequal and probably always will be. Regina hasn’t had many friends in her life for a reason; she likes to be completely dominant and that doesn’t equate to a natural friendship developing. Emma had to do all the work to move the relationship past Regina’s irrational conviction that Emma had somehow deliberately sabotaged her happiness and the venom that came with it. Regina still has a long way to go folks. So no, I don’t think it’s likely that we’re going to see Emz and Reggie hitting ladies night at The Rabbit Hole anytime soon.

Just a word on Regina here – Our first clue that Regina isn’t exactly a changed woman is the way she treats Sidney. She refuses to uphold her side of the bargain and release him form the mirror – sure, it’s temporary except for the fact that the end of his detention in the mirror is on her whim and under pain of continued imprisonment if he doesn’t do as she asks. She is still willing to use other people to get what she wants. Which is not to say she hasn’t made any progress. She has. She is trying to help find a cure for Marion. She is spending day after day cooped up in her vault looking for answers. This is Regina very much trying NOT to revert to her old ways – she’s spent a lifetime in selfishness and seeing herself as the victim and that hasn’t changed. But we know what she is capable of; we’ve seen it. So perhaps (and I’m trying to find the silver lining here) the fact that she has not killed Emma/Marion to get what she wants, does show growth. She’s still got a long way to go. A loooong way. She’s still externalising her problems, she’s still looking to blame others, She’s still uber selfish and only looks at herself in any given situation and, I think, she’s still trying to be good for other people (Henry and Robin) not for herself. She’s still just ‘living with’ what she’s done to others, and seeing her well-disguised guilt as her penance rather than doing anything markedly different with her life.

Snowing – Mary Margaret and David are so cute! They’ve been together forever and they are the blueprint for a productive, true love relationship in OUAT. They’ve got Belle around to babysit so they can take an hour together for an evening stroll. Mary Margaret is reluctant; she doesn’t want to leave the baby at all. David thinks she needs a break and feels it would be beneficial for her to see that the world is not going to implode if they have a little alone time. Their walk turns into a custom-made Snowing adventure when David discovers that Will Scarlet has escaped from his jail cell – A prince and princess without the evil queen on their trail, it’ll be just like old times babe! What is lovely about Snow and Charming is that they know each other so well that they can anticipate the others moves – Snow’s encounter with Will is a case in point. Even though Charming had not concocted the ruse, Snow was able to sense Charming’s fingerprints all over it, get the message, act accordingly and successfully re-discover a little piece of herself in the process. They are of one heart (literally) and, it would seem, almost one mind too.

Captain Swan – The episode is book-ended by two lovely scenes between Killian and Emma that show the burgeoning strength of this couple. Killian brings in another box of files from the mayor’s office –they exchange very flirty smiles from across the room and then Killian announces that he’s taking Henry sailing, unless she’s got anything else that needs doing. (Just make sure Henry wears his life jacket.) Just as they are going in for a kiss, Will makes a crack from inside his jail cell – “befriending the son to get in with the mum. Yep, no one will ever see through that.” Killian turns around and in menacing pirate mode suggests that he keep his thoughts to himself , he then turns to Emma, once more the love-struck softie and kisses her on the cheek before saying goodbye. It’s beautiful. She smiles. He makes her happy. He’s not just about her; he wants to be in the kid’s life too. They are in the process of forming a family.

Cut to the end of the episode and Killian comes across Emma in quite a different mood. She’s had a rough day and is feeling vexed. It would have been so easy for her to send Killian away saying she wasn’t in the mood for company, or for him to sense her disposition and retreat. But she doesn’t ask him to leave and he doesn’t go, even though they would be the easier options. He gives her a drink, which produces a wry smile. He asks about the box on her desk.
    “What’s left of my childhood.”
    “May I have the honour?”
He asks if he can have the privilege, if she trusts him with this rare glimpse into her past. He wants to know her better and he looks on that as a gift. Emma considers him for a full five seconds – you can see her weighing up the risk, and then opens the box. She shows him something that she’s never shown another person (outside Mary Margaret and the baby blanket). This is not a happy box for her. Her childhood is full of painful memories of isolation and rejection. She shares this piece of herself with him – who she knows will not reject her, who understands what it’s like to be abandoned and misunderstood. She doesn’t have to explain it to him. He just gets it. This is so much more real than her heavily explained, ill-received attempt with Regina earlier.
They watch the videotape of her and Lily. He wants to know more about her beginnings. And again, this is a case of it would be so much easier to avoid or not mention it – the past is the past after all. But they share the moment even though it’s not easy; this film hasn’t been watched since it was made and it’s upsetting to see the face of the girl that Emma felt so bad about betraying. Killian holds her close and Emma rests her head on his shoulder closing her eyes, taking comfort from him, finally feeling some peace after her emotionally draining evening until a new, unknown voice catches her attention and the past connection to the Snow Queen is revealed.

These two are clearly earmarked for ‘true love’ – It’s not a case of when, not if. They have been paralleled to Snowing all along. Obviously were just in the beginning stages, but sit back and enjoy CSers, we’re watching a remarkable, epic love story unfolding.

i-love-you-swan: Currently hurting me: This part of 4x04 Obviously him missing the dartboard was meant to be comical, but in the context of what he was alluding to before it - that she only comes looking for him when something’s up - it’s heartbreaking to me. Killian is so shocked that he completely loses focus. Because he can’t believe what he’s hearing. Because while he would happily spend hours in Emma’s company doing absolutely nothing, it’s shocking to him that she wants to time alone with him. In every other interaction he’s had with anyone we’ve seen him onscreen with; someone has wanted something from him. Not simply the pleasure of his company. Not even his thoughts/opinions/feelings on things. In fact nearly everyone has been dismissive of him when he speaks. It’s just been so freaking long since someone has just wanted to be with him, to just be with Killian Jones, not pirate, not Captain, not paid to have sex with him. Just him. Just Killian. [x]

This one had me actually laugh out loud 😉

    >Anonymous asked:
I think if there were any major MAJOR character deaths it’d be Belle or Will Scarlet. They couldn’t kill off one of Snowing with out losing the other because they share a heart. Will is new enough to not be too huge of a sacrifice for the audience. Belle would fuel a crazy good Rumple arc that would last a long time. The only way any other character would die, IMO, would be if the actor wanted to explore other professional options.

I don’t think anyone is gonna die. I think it’s just Adam trolling. I also think he learned his lesson last year with revealing anything about possible character deaths. It overshadows everything. So if anyone is dying or not dying, my money is that it will be a complete surprise.

Also, we know nothing is happening in 4A as all cast members have been seen filming the finale.

    Except Colin of course.

    Because dead.

Saw this & I agree with the Answer:

Q~ Okay to be honest I think if Milah came back and had to pick between Killian and Rumple (the men they’ve become now and not who they once were) I honestly think she’d choose Rumple.

    A~ Disagree.

I don’t think she would choose either.

I think Milah wanted freedom more than anything. Killian facilitated that at the time and they fell in love as they embraced that freedom. But he is not the same man anymore. And with any relationship, timing is everything.

And Killian and Milah’s time has passed.

But I don’t think she would ever go back to Rumple. Never ever ever never ever never. Ever. Never ever.

(not that I think Rumple would want her back either. At all.)

    Pretty time …

    LOVE this-

"The Captain and The Swan" For centuries, captains of the sea, ancient mariners, have guided their ships in the dark of night, using the stars. The night sky has many constellations, named centuries ago and passed down from one generation of sailor to another. Among those stars and ancient constellations is one called Cygnus, The Swan. Prints and iPhone Cases/Skins - Available here - For my friends who sail “Captain Swan”.

Can we talk about how happy Emma must have been to find her parents waiting up for after the date?
WE CAN TALK ABOUT IT FOR ALL OF ETERNITY.
    MORE CHARMING FAMILY MOMENTS PLEASE.
I honestly don’t know which is better, Emma totally fangirling to herself against the door, Snow’s excited face, Charming’s absolute 100% doneness or Emma’s smile when she sees them. This is pure gold.
