Something so awesome about Emma’s arc this season, besides the beautiful growth she has shown and how much more open and vulnerable she is willing to be, is the fact that for the first time in her life, she’s accepted that she needs to live rather than survive, and from that has come her finally being able to make her own choices about her life instead of having things decided for her by others, which has been happening for her whole life. She finally is able to make active decisions instead of someone else choosing for her or feeling like she can’t do things because she needs to protect herself.

And what choices does she make?

    image

    image

    (just to name a couple).

A lot of voices have a lot of things to say about Captain Swan, despite Hook clearly stating that Emma’s decision about their relationship is just as important as his.

But these are the choices she made. Newly healing from the issues in her past, she chooses that what she wants to do with her time is go out with Killian, become intimate with Killian, let Killian inside her walls. How she plans to live is to explore her relationship with Killian, to be open to the casual intimacy we saw in this week’s episode, and most importantly, to share with him a part of her that has been closed off to nearly everyone else for her entire life.

Just as I wrote about here, Emma wants someone to share her life with. She wants the intimacy they have or she’d still be pushing him away. Every time they have ever kissed, Emma had a choice, and she chose to kiss him instead of walk away or tell him no like she did with Graham. She smiles as he kisses her cheek, smiles when she talks about how well their date went.

Emma is happy, and it’s because for once, she’s finally in control of her own life and making her own choices, and that includes her relationship with Killian. She’s happy because, for once, she trusts someone and feels she can lean on them when she wants to (not that she needs someone, but it’s nice to have someone). And I never want happy Emma to go away. Ever.

Perfect example of a “huge” Regina Fan’s review just popped up in my tweeter feed (& I agree with pretty much all her points about Emma & Regina, but I personally would like them to be friends- they dont need to be BBFs or anything- I prefer Elsa for that role *prays to the PTB to keep Frozen cast*, but it would be nice if they at least liked each other enough to ‘want’ to help each other out, rather than doing so only because of Henry kind of thing)

…..Here’s the thing with these scenes: I love Regina. I hate that she’s heartbroken and that she feels so alone and I understand why her sarcasm and sass are her go-to weapons because she doesn’t trust anyone to get close to her without hurting her. That makes my heart hurt for her and I just want to hug her. Her genuine disbelief that Emma considered them friends is the essence of her character – she never thinks anyone is truly on her side and she assumes she’s always going to be alone because that’s how things have always been and that is something she has in common with Emma. I like that Emma recognizes that loneliness inside Regina and wants to help her see that it doesn’t have to define her life just like Emma’s family and Hook have helped her see she doesn’t need to hide behind her walls.

But the execution of the scenes bothered me. Regina’s ranting at Emma in this episode was over the top. We saw this anger in the season premiere. We saw the sass the last time the two women crossed paths in 4×03. Was it really necessary to have most of their scenes in this episode revolving around Regina sniping at Emma and Emma sitting back and taking it because she felt guilty? As a fan of both of these ladies (with an admitted bias for Regina), I spent more time wincing and rolling my eyes and wishing Emma would just walk away instead of letting Regina continue to berate her. Let’s not forget Emma’s entire life sucked because Regina cast a curse that forced Snow and Charming to send their newborn through a portal – yet we don’t see Emma ranting at Regina every chance she gets.

Most of this episode made it seem like Regina hasn’t grown at all from that woman who once blamed a child for all of her problems and vowed to destroy her and that’s not fair because she has grown – we’ve seen it. We’ve seen it in the way she dealt with Zelena’s threats last season, in the way she saved Marian from the snow monster and the way she didn’t hesitate to help when Robin asked her to save Marian and the way she’s putting his happiness above hers. That’s the Regina we need to see more of, not this ranting, angry, bitter Regina who hits the same notes every time she shares a scene with Emma (also, can we talk about her being surprised Sidney betrayed her? Of course he did! Regina, you’ve screwed the man over one too many times and he found an out and took it).

Eventually, Regina did take Emma’s olive branch and I hope this one sticks. Here’s the thing: I don’t think these two women should be friends. I know it sounds harsh and goes against the show’s theme of hope and forgiveness, but I don’t think it’s necessary. It’s one thing to let go of baggage and anger – that needs to happen, mainly on Regina’s side since Emma has already done so. But I don’t need them to have coffee dates or talk about boys. I need them to be mature so they can parent their son together and make his life easier and they should work together and pool their magic to keep the town and their loved ones safe when there’s a new threat. That’s all I want from this relationship – cordial coexistence.

While Regina’s growth is difficult to spot at times, Emma’s continues to shine beautifully. After reaching out to Regina, Emma headed back to the sheriff’s station and her time with Lily and the decision she made to walk away was still on her mind. Hook found her and offered her a drink and then asked her what was wrong. This is nothing new for them – he’s been reading her moods since they climbed the beanstalk in season two. But now Emma doesn’t resist as hard when he asks her to let him in – she showed him the box of her childhood things and when he asked to look inside so he could get to know another part of her, she agreed.

This was a huge step for Emma – she let another one of the walls surrounding her heart crumble away and allowed him to see her painful past, not only the mementos she kept in the box, but the emotions the memories brought to the surface. As always, Jennifer Morrison and Colin O’Donoghue demonstrated how perfectly in sync they are as she kept her face controlled, letting the audience see Emma trying to hold everything in while he gave her a gentle smile and carefully and respectfully looked at what she’d kept. His patience allowed her to let her guard down and Morrison relaxed just enough of the tension she carried in her shoulders for viewers to see how much Emma trusted him in that moment.

Emma found her video camera (and naturally it was keyed up to the Emma and Lily part) and explained to Hook that she’d been thinking about her friend and hadn’t watched it since they made the video. Again, he understood this was a big deal for her to share this and let him in and he took her hand and let her set the pace. Emma accepted the comfort he offered and snuggled closer as they watched the footage – it was a beautiful, quiet moment between two people who have always been able to communicate without words…..

@WickedRegal …. why would you think an EvilRegal said anything about Lana or Regina????? Did you even take the time to actually read the posts or did you just react because a silly stirrer is trying to create drama… There has been No, Zero, Zip, Zilch Lana or Regina bashing going on thank you very much.

    Fact:
I said “Emma fans” not EvilRegals, go back & actually read what was written o.O

Gonna be blunt here, I find coming in here & saying we are “Bashing Regina & Lana” a bit rich to be honest, if Hook’s supposed ‘wrong doings’ can be discussed, dissected & touted all over these forums mostly out of context & usually with Hook haters personal opinions trumping cannon or “Because I want to hate him” attitude lol- even when it’s not in relation to the character being discussed & that not be considered “bashing”- then, sorry but you can blimmin well bet your darn cotton socks Regina’s actions & the facts behind them will be discussed when it comes to how she treats Emma or Hook in a CS thread & it is the furthest thing from bashing.
Lana gave an interview & what she said was discussed- NO ONE, has bashed Lana or called her names- they have said they arent pleased with how she worded what she said- MASSIVE difference!
You may not like what has been said, but frankly nothing but cannon events & how they relate to Emma has been discussed- that isnt “bashing”– No one has said “Regina is an evil so & so because I want her to be- so there”- we’ve said we dont approve of her actions & how she treated Emma- BIG difference.

You have come in here hurling unjust accusations, while using obnoxious gifs, with nothing constructive to add to the conversation at hand, other than what appears to be a 4yr old style tantrum over the people in this thread not agreeing with your opinion on Regina’s treatment of Emma, or that Regina is the be all & end all of the show (your stats are seriously skewed by the way- almost every character fandom “thinks” their fav is the most loved & the polls prove it- just saying), with your “I speak for an entire fandom & what I say, goes- Oh & pass on this snide remark to however you’ve been talking too well you are at it” attitude & all you are coming off as doing is trolling & baiting- it isnt nice, isnt warranted is frankly uncalled for. Not Cool!

    @Sarah_TN

This one spoiler above all others proves Hook isnt dying anytime soon 😉

Is there anything you can tell us about Hook’s arc for this season of Once Upon a Time that we haven’t heard yet? Anything on his childhood/parents? –Ana
Series cocreator Adam Horowitz would only say that when it comes to the good (?) pirate, “There is more delving into his past to come” – though the burning question of whom he traded the Jolly Roger to, in the name of finding Emma, won’t be revealed until “somewhere down the road.”

Now We all know “somewhere down the road” could be 4seasons from now- look at how long it took them to get to the writer of the book! They wouldnt even bother considering us finding out who he traded the ship to, if they had plans to off him- so rest easy 🙂
    http://tvline.com/2014/09/05/homeland-season-4-spoilers-carrie-quinn/

Colin was also filming for 409.

We will not see more of Hook’s backstory in the first 11 episodes, but we will in the second half of the season. http://www.onceuponafans.com/ouaf-interview-getting-iced

& then you have to remember that we have this:

Did you always intended to have Hook in love with Emma? Was that something you planned out or was it something that developed because of the actor’s chemistry onscreen?

    Eddy: Always.

Adam: Always. I mean, listen… You go into these things with the best intentions. That is to say we loved the idea that Hook and Emma would be kindred spirits and that is why we kind of wrote that in the beanstalk episode of season 2. But of course, you know, there’s always the chance that there isn’t any chemistry. We were very lucky that we feel that Hook and Emma have an enormous amount of chemistry so that kind of allowed us to stick to the plan that we wanted.

    http://www.tvfanatic.com/2014/05/once-upon-a-time-producers-tease-struggles-of-redemption-a-shock/

They didnt spend 2 seasons establishing this big romantic arc for Emma & Killian, just to then go kill him off, especially when Emma’s only just opening up to love again & terrified she’ll lose him like she lost all the others (that would destroy a large chunk of the character growth Emma’s made over the last two & half seasons, which makes no sense from a story telling standpoint). Will Killian be in danger/life threatening situation/s this season- Of course, it’s a given, since he loves Emma & wants to keep safe. But look at it like I do, Emma & Killian are the savior & the survivor- who is the one person who could survive being the saviors romantic partner- the one guy in all the realms whom has survived 300yrs worth of dangerous entanglements with DO Rumple, Pan, Cora, Regina, Maleficent, Blackbeard, Daddy Charming 😉 & who knows else 🙂

Anybody have anything that might lift a downhearted soul?

Hook flashbacks in season 4b- why announce them if they were to kill him of. Besides Rumple, he does not have any connections to someone from his past. It would be pointless to show us his history if he was to be killed. To what/ whom could they parallel that??? On happier note: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nALPljW-rs4 They have planned CS to be TL from the beginning.

Totally agree with @lady here, they also said we’d see Emma fight for Killian & it would inspire him

Awww, Thank you for posting that wonderful S2 Once promo- it really is timeless & still gets me in the feels everytime I watch it (I wish they’d do more like it tbh)
