ParticipantAll of the dress “controversy” is weird to me–I’m not much of a fashion person, so the fact that I even noticed that it’s different from what she’s worn on previous dates is surprising in and of itself, haha. (I’m a language person; if I overanalyze something in an episode it usually has to do with that.) I mean, we all know it’s way more about with whom Emma is going out rather than what she’s wearing.

I dont get the controversy either- I do like reading peoples thoughts on the whys, because we not get that spelt out to us on show (although it might have been spelt out in the interview Jen & Colin gave, I dont know) 😉
I’m with you on the fashion thing (I’m a jeans & t-shirt kinda gal), although I do like to look nice on the rare occasion I date, so I seriously wish there was a less tedious way to find clothes that a) look good on & b) have them all in the same place lol 😉
It’s weird the “whom” hasnt copped as much flack as the dress to be honest, its a nice, but weird change 😛[adrotate group="5"]surayya
ParticipantAnother lovely recap (have only included the CS/Emma parts here):
…..Killian is someone who’d do anything to protect Emma — it’s something he happily does not because Emma can’t take care of herself but because she shouldn’t be expected to carry the weight of the world on her shoulder. He doesn’t try to save the savior because she needs saving, but because she deserves it. It’s not that he feels she needs to be taken care of because she can’t handle it herself, but he does these little things to show her that she’s loved and treasured — diamonds are resilient as well, but they’re handled with care not because they’re fragile but because they deserve to be cherished. One person shouldn’t be given the responsibility to save an entire town on their own. One of our favorite things about Once Upon A Time is the fact that it shuns the conception that needing help is a sign of weakness. Snow could’ve taken on the entire kingdom by herself, but she needed Charming to remind her of her worth. Anna’s capable of returning safe from the Enchanted Forest, but she needed someone to not only believe in her strengths but to be there for Elsa just as she would. Although Emma’s capable of “sheriff-ing” on her own, there’s nothing wrong with her father being there with her. There’s nothing wrong with Killian wanting to help her because everyone deserves the kind of partner that’ll reassure and encourage them when it all becomes too much……
We’re going to have to agree with Hook on the whole “why should I carry around this ridiculous thing if you’re never there when I use it.” We’re fairly certain there’s not a single soul in the world that doesn’t know how frustrating it is when someone doesn’t answer the phone when we need them to. The scene offered the perfect comedic relief in an episode that was otherwise heavily focused on taking care of deeper issues than Hook’s dilemmas with a cell phone.
Emma Swan’s life has been anything but simple. No one should have anyone they care for die an untimely death in their arms and it hasn’t just occurred in Emma’s life once, but twice –three times if we consider Walsh. One of Killian’s most beautiful traits is how carefully he listens and takes things into consideration thus, when Elsa told him that Emma’s situation makes it difficult to trust, he takes it upon himself to tell her that even though they’re different, it’s safe to trust him. But what he doesn’t realize is that, Emma’s learned to trust him long ago and the issue at hand is that anytime she’s opened her heart to love, she’s either been betrayed or they’ve left her too soon thus instilling the horrifying fear in her that she’ll lose everyone she cares for. Because she’s been an orphan for nearly three decades, belittled and betrayed more times than not, subconsciously it’s forced her to believe that a happy ending isn’t in the cards for her. And for the first time in a very long time, Emma Swan trusts someone other than herself with her heart. It’s the kind of trust however that’s stemmed so deep within her, it’d destroy her to lose him. While in “A Tale of Two Sisters” her magic wasn’t powerful enough to take down the Snow Monster, with Killian’s life on the line, her magic, which came effortlessly to her this time, was powerful enough to save Killian’s life and knock the Snow Queen down. While she’s not fully in control of it, it says a great deal about Killian’s place in her life since magic tends to come easier to her because of the faith he’s shown in her.
However, along with that trust and adoration comes the haunting fear that fate could take Killian away from her. It’s tastefully revealing that it’s always been safe for Emma to be vulnerable around Killian – through the ceaseless adoration he’s shown, he’s made it easy for her to understand that with him, all of her is welcomed. And for a woman who’s been shunned down in the past, freely being able to address her fears of losing a man only to have him assure her that she never has to worry is wonderfully comforting.
Morrison has an indescribable way of making the audience feel each and every one of Emma’s emotions. Through her breathlessly, tearful line deliveries and childlike expressiveness, we could not only see how afraid Emma is of losing Killian, but even without having gone through the heartbreaking losses she’s seen, you could feel the depths of her pain entirely from Morrison’s astounding performances. One of Emma’s most admirable traits is the fact that despite how broken she may have been, she’s never been afraid of being vulnerable – she hasn’t allowed her heart to grow cold; though her walls have been up, she’s remained compassionate. And what this means for Emma Swan, the woman, is that she’s finally at a place in her life where there’s someone she values as her equal — someone she cannot bear to lose because of how much she wholeheartedly cares for him. In the past when Emma’s ran from him, it wasn’t because she didn’t care for him, it was because deep down, she felt that they were kindred spirits and that not only meant opening up, but it meant it could potentially be lost. Just as Morrison’s performance showcased how deeply Emma cares, O’Donoghue’s poised and enamored delivery of the lines “you don’t have to worry about me. If there’s one thing I’m good at it, it’s surviving,” is precisely what Emma needed to hear in that situation. Killian’s confidence in the manner is what she needs to be reassured of the fact that just as he’s done so in the past, he’d do anything and everything he can to be by her side. And we love that once he saw a faint smile forming on her face, for the first time, he felt confident enough to initiate a kiss himself. He embraced her welcoming expression and kissed her in a way that felt like a promise — each of their kisses different and more passionate than the last have always meant something beautiful for this duo. Killian initiating the kiss after a heartbreaking reveal was his way of showing Emma that he’s not going anywhere, that his love for her goes deeper than anything he’s felt before.

“The one thing I am good at is surviving.”
Look at the way her expression softens in the first gif into almost a smile. She has just admitted to him that not only does she trust him, but she can’t lose him. She’s in an extremely vulnerable spot in this moment – probably the most vulnerable she has been since captain swan met. So Killian reassures her that it won’t happen. AND LOOK AT HER. It’s exactly the reassurance she needs. In that moment of vulnerability, Killian did the best thing he could do. He made Emma smile instead of cry or want to put her walls back up. He makes her feel happy and safe from the terrible things that have happened to her, and that she’s scared will happen to her again. The words may not fully extinguish her fear even though she trusts him and believes him. But that doesn’t matter, because in this moment of fear and vulnerability, Killian Jones makes Emma Swan happy. And that’s amazing and perfect.

ParticipantSo I saw a fanfiction prompt on tumblr saying that Emma doesn’t wear Graham’s shoelace and the swan necklace anymore. I don’t think I’ve been paying attention much to notice, so is that really true?
I think (don’t quote me) Emma gave the necklace to Henry in that deleted scene, after the funeral, after the boat trip with Killian, when they were chatting about Neal. I have a feeling she hasn’t worn it since. I don’t know about the shoelace. But that’s easier to hide under long sleeves. But I would have thought it was obvious that if you were dressing up to go out on a date you wouldn’t wear a dirty old shoelace around your wrist (regardless of it’s meaning), or a necklace that reminds you of trust issues with a previous lover.
Oh, yes she did give Henry the necklace. I also agree about the shoelace- bit will see if I can spot it or not tonight either way

ParticipantHow can one dress cause so much discussion!!
Personally, I don’t think Emma is wearing that dress FOR Hook. I mean aside from showing off her cleavage, it isn’t a dress that screams Captain Hook’s girlfriend to me – even in the Enchanted Forest he seemed to prefer her in a different kind of look. BUT, with that said – I think Hook loves Emma in anything and everything. I think Emma just wants to look pretty. Not necessarily FOR Hook but for HERSELF. She wants a chance to be girlie, she never had that. That dress screams girlie – it’s the Storybrooke equivalent of a princess dress. And that is what Emma gets to be for a night – the princess she is. She gets to forget about chasing monsters and remember that she IS a fairy tale princess. No, she doesn’t HAVE to wear a princess dress to be a fairy tale princess but when your life has been about as far away from a fairy tale as possible and you ARE, in fact, a princess why NOT dress the part every now and then?
I mean I love Emma in whatever she wears but it’s nice to see her in something different. I don’t think she HAS to wear a girlie dress to be a princess (I actually prefer Snow’s pearl white pants outfit with the long overcoat thingy that she wears in the EF over anything she has ever worn and it isn’t a traditional princess outfit). But even if she WANTED to wear something FOR Hook, who cares? I’ve been married for 10 years and there have been many times that I have been shopping for an outfit for some function and when I’ve decided what to buy one of the factors HAS been what my husband likes. And sometimes I have decided to go with MY second choice is because I know my husband will like it better and I want him to like what I look like.
There have also been times I’ve tried on a dress and been like “This is so totally NOT something I would normally wear but for some reason I LOVE it” so I get it and it’s fun to be different for a night. Prime example, after Emma wore the black leather dress I saw a faux leather dress and tried it on when I needed a dress for a ballet fund raiser. Surprisingly, I loved it. It was totally not me and shocked me that it actually looked formal enough. I have gotten more compliments on that dress than any other I own. It doesn’t make some shocking statement about me, it doesn’t mean that I am trying to be someone I am not, it doesn’t mean I am out of character when I wear. I means I like the darn dress!!
Re so much discussion about a dress, 1st thing that springs to mind- slightly unhealthy obsession with fictional characters lol 😉
Re everything else you wrote- My thoughts Exactly, so I have nothing to add. Thank you! 🙂surayya

Killy & his spider senses 😉This is Why Hook/Killy Didnt “Blackmail” Rumple (I do wish people would pick up a dictionary once in a while!)
Blackmail =
1) the action, treated as a criminal offense, of demanding money from a person in return for not revealing compromising or injurious information about that person.
2) demand money from (a person) in return for not revealing compromising or injurious information about that person.
Killy Did Not Demand Money From Rumple, Therefore He Did Not Blackmail Rumple.
Killian “Made a Deal” with Rumple, the worst he can be accused of doing here is compelling or pushing Rumple into helping him.

Fangirl Thursday: A New Dress and an Open Heart
This post is a little different from my usual Fangirl Thursday ones, but sometimes you just have to go where the inspiration leads.
I love clothes. I love to shop for them, to look at them in magazines and on red carpets, and to talk about them. As such, dissecting a character’s costume choices is one of my favorite ways to analyze any piece of media. From the evolution of Kate Beckett’s hair to the bright colors worn by Mindy Lahiri, the outward appearance of a TV character gives us a lot of insight into exactly who they are.
Therefore, when a character shows up wearing something different from what we’ve come to expect, it’s important. It’s worth talking about.
This—Emma Swan in a soft pink dress with her hair pulled back, ready for her first real date with Hook—is worth talking about.
We’ve never seen Emma wear anything like this before, and that’s perfect. Because we’ve never seen Emma feel like this before.
The two most memorable instances of Emma wearing a dress were on “dates” in the pilot and in Season Three’s “New York City Serenade.” In both instances, Emma was dressing for work—in the pilot she was working a case and in “New York City Serenade,” she came to her date from work. (I watched that scene again to make sure, and she apologized for being late, prompting Walsh to assume she “caught the guy.”) And even if she went home to change before her date with Walsh, there’s another parallel to be found between that date and the one in the pilot: Emma wasn’t truly herself on either date. We have no idea how Emma Swan would really dress for a date because this is all new—for us as viewers and for Emma as a character.
Emma Swan has always been a guarded character, and her clothes have reflected that. Her leather jackets and her dark-colored clothes are her armor. Even the initial pilot script described her in her dress as “a Terminator in couture.” Emma’s first instinct is to protect, and for a long time, that meant protecting herself by projecting a “tough” image to cover up the fact that she’s always felt like “a lost little girl who didn’t matter and didn’t think she ever would.” Emma feared showing anyone even a shred of vulnerability; she hardened herself in response to her hard life, leaving no room for clothes that would make her look “soft” to people that could hurt her.
But this dress—with its delicate pink color and romantic style—is as soft as it gets. It’s a striking visual contrast to anything we’ve ever seen Emma wear before, and it’s supposed to be. This is Emma without her armor, putting it aside for at least one night with a man she’s come to trust with both her rough edges and her delicate heart. This is Emma embracing a quiet, happy moment where she can put aside her role as the savior and the sheriff and indulge in a little time to simply be Emma, a woman who is finally letting herself be loved for exactly who she is.
The Emma wearing this dress and smiling at Hook is a direct reflection of the Emma we saw at the end of “Rocky Road.” She let the last of her emotional armor fall away in that episode, completely exposing the soft, vulnerable heart that she tried to harden after losing so much. And she did that because—as she explicitly told Hook—she trusts him. That trust allowed her to be completely vulnerable with him, to let the last bit of her guard down. So she can wear a soft pink dress in front of him and smile without reservation now—because she feels safe to be completely herself with him, and that means letting him see the softer side of her personality that she felt scared to reveal to anyone after being hurt in the past.
Emma spent so long looking for a home, for a place where she could feel safe to be herself and loved for who she is. And now she has that. She has a mother who’s holding a camera as her daughter goes on a date and a father who looks protective and proud all at once. And she even has a friend who looks truly happy for her.
This is a moment for Emma and Hook, but it’s a moment for her parents, too. They never got to watch their little princess go to a ball or get courted by a suitor. And Emma never had parents waiting up for her after a date or taking pictures before prom. There’s a sense of innocence to this moment, and that’s reflected in Emma’s dress, too. Emma grew up too fast; she never got to experience an innocent moment like this one, and I’m so happy that both she and her parents are able to have this. And that innocence comes into play for Hook, too. He must feel at least a little bit like the young lieutenant he once was, who might have dreamed of courting a princess before losing his brother and starting down a darker path.
Because Emma is a princess, and in the Season Three finale we finally saw her embrace that part of herself. She danced at a ball with Hook, who called her “your highness,” and she seemed to truly enjoy living in a fairytale for at least that moment. This date is their chance to bring a little bit of the romance of that ball into Emma’s world. Her dress is ladylike because this is her chance to let herself feel like the princess she is. Once Upon a Time is Emma’s fairytale, and this date is her first real chance to have a fairytale moment in a world that felt like anything but a fairytale for too long.
Emma’s life has been filled with so much loss, and she carries that loss with her in many ways. Physically, Neal’s swan keychain/necklace and Graham’s shoelace have been common parts of her wardrobe, but they’re absent for her date. She is trying to move beyond the pain those things represented, trusting that this chance at love doesn’t have to end up like it did with Neal and Graham. This is an Emma Swan trying to let go of the painful losses that made her so afraid to open her heart to Hook. In her pink dress with her hair off her face and her light makeup, she is the living embodiment of the idea of a fresh start.
The Emma we see in this dress is a softer Emma than we’ve ever seen before, but she is by no means a weaker Emma. In fact, she’s stronger than she’s ever been. It takes an amazingly strong person to trust someone with the softest and most vulnerable parts of your heart after you’ve been hurt the way Emma has. It takes incredible bravery to let your guard down after a lifetime of having it up. Emma showed true courage when she fought dragons and witches, but she’s showing perhaps even more courage in this moment—trusting Hook with the softest parts of herself that she’s kept hidden out of fear of being hurt.
Emma Swan is such a great character because she’s layered and multifaceted, like real women are. Yes, she wears jeans and leather, but she can also wear pink dresses, using both of those wardrobe choices to highlight different kinds of strength. Those two things don’t have to be mutually exclusive when you have a character with the depth we’ve seen in Emma. They simply reflect different facets of this multifaceted character.
There are so many different ways that women (and people in general) can be strong. Once Upon a Time celebrates the idea that true strength doesn’t always show itself in wielding a sword or taking down a monster. It often shows itself in opening yourself up to someone when life has given you every reason to fear vulnerability, and that’s what this date and this dress are all about.
The strongest people don’t always wear armor. Sometimes they wear pink dresses.surayya

ParticipantHehe, fan encounter with Colin during filming …
Long post on the way, but just know that our sweet Irish Prince is definitely as amazing as you think. One of the most gracious, kind, and generous individuals you could ever be in the company of. And yes, HE IS AS HANDSOME UP-CLOSE AS HE IS 10 FEET AWAY AND AS FUNNY AND DORKY AS YOU THINK. Love him to bits, fan for life!
P.S. scribblecat27, he signed my CS bag that I got of one of your drawings! He held it up and said, “Is that a bag?” and admired it for a moment 😀 Thought you’d want to know!

Well! We just got back, got to see the whole cast minus Lana, Bobby, Sean & Emilie. Although, Lana and Sean were on set wayyyyy early this morning before we got there. The only person we got to meet was Colin — Josh was a little under the weather and it was a LONG shooting day so everyone was exhausted.
When Colin was signing autographs and taking pictures after we met him, someone who is usually at the filming shoots asked for a picture and Colin said “You already have like 20 with me!” just joking around and the guy was like “Well yeah but that was when you were a pirate” (meaning dressed in the pirate clothes) and I went “He’s still a pirate!!!” and Colin said “I’ll always be a pirate” right back to me. IT WAS SO CUTE.
We couldn’t see what they were filming, they did several scenes and we got to meet a lot of the crew. On the way back to their trailers, Elizabeth Lail & Scott Michael Foster were singing “Let it go” — BE MORE CUTER, GUYS.
But let me just say this about Colin O’Donoghue- we drove 15 hours to see this cast and even though he was visibly exhausted, he took the time to come over and say hi. He was the only one to do so and I am so so thankful. He also leaned on my car and propped himself up on it with his hand and now I never want to wash it! hahaha 🙂 But he made this girl’s trip and this girl’s life and just when I thought I couldn’t love him anymore… he goes and surprises me. Now I think I’m going to go have a good cry. 🙂
