ParticipantI disagree with that meta writer, particularly with the part where they get all aggressive with the “if you don’t agree with X then you don’t deserve Y”. I also dislike the implication that Emma is only wearing that dress for Hook as if Hook’s enjoyment is more important than Emma’s comfort. Emma has worn plenty of dresses over the show that have shown her feminine side but were still in the style of Emma. The dress that Emma wears on the date isn’t Emma’s usual style. I think the problem is more the colour rather than the actual dress itself. It’s a very virginal colour whereas Emma usually wears bold colours.
Agree to disagree- I think it is totally in character given the changes in attire we’ve already seen during 3B & her implication isnt it’s “just for Hook” at all- she said clearly it reflects the emotional changes we’ve being seeing since 3B & that it’s what Emma “wants to wear”, but looking good for Hook WILL have been a factor in Emma’s selection- thats simply the nature of going on a date & that was her point there.

ParticipantLove this meta-
That pink dress is a message from Emma to Hook, AND the viewers stuck on “Season 1 Emma”:”I’m a complicated woman. And you don’t know me as well as you think you do.”
Hook has demonstrated a fantastic understanding of Emma’s emotional side – we’ve been shown again and again how well he reads her. But his interactions with her have, almost entirely, been limited to epic quests of realm hopping and saving loved ones (and the future).
As such, Hook’s impression of Emma is similar to that of fans who often refer to “Season 1 Emma” – she’s a woman with emotional walls, gruff and rough around the edges, jeans and leather. And like many fans, he fell in love with that woman. She’s strong and brave, perceptive and willful, powerful and determined. And the clothes she wears are part of the way she conveys those traits – the ones she wants others to see.
But as we saw in 3B, when Emma had a year without painful memories and a wardrobe to match that emotional state, there is a softer side to her as well. She wore silk shirts, high heeled shoes and boots, more skirts and dresses than we’d seen in the other 2 1/2 seasons combined, and a soft red coat in place of her leather one. This wardrobe change was intended to reflect a woman who didn’t wear her clothing like armor. She even went to battle the Wicked Witch in a skirt and heels!
There were elements of this version of Emma all along – the flowing curls she wore in her hair in S1 (that takes time), the make-up, the cashmere sweaters, the dresses she wore in her younger days in the Tallahassee flashbacks, the dress she donned to head to Manhattan with Gold and Henry. And most importantly the fact that she told Graham “You don’t need to dress a woman like a man to give her authority”.
Emma knows Hook fell in love with her in jeans and boots – but it didn’t go unnoticed by her that he enjoyed seeing her in a dress when they traveled back in time. And I think when they have their little chat about planning their date Emma might feel like she has something to prove:
Emma: I know how to plan a date.
Hook: You know how to chase a monster. I know how to plan an evening.
The implication being “You’re a tough lass and I love you for it but better leave the romance bit to me”. And I think Emma might take this as a challenge. She’s going to show him a thing or two when she dresses for their date. That pink dress is Emma saying “You don’t think I know about romance? I’m going to knock your fucking socks off with just how soft and feminine I can be when I’m not battling monsters.” She wants his jaw to hit the floor – in awe and shock.
Because this night is very much about finding quiet moments – spending time together NOT battling monsters. And according to JMo it’s about getting to know one another – showing vulnerability. Given all that it makes perfect sense that Emma would wear the furthest thing from armor. It makes perfect sense that she would wear a dress that is, fashion-wise, the opposite of the black leather she wore to her date with Walsh (which Hook witnessed). Hook has already seen that side of her – and now she’s going to show him something different.
It makes perfect sense that she would chose to wear something so soft and so feminine – and it’s going to take his breath away, not just because she looks so beautiful, but because that dress is for him. Because she’s offering him a part of herself that she hasn’t given to anyone in an incredibly long time – maybe ever.
And if you don’t think that’s fucking beautiful, if you don’t think that fucking pink dress – and all the character development it took to bring her to a place where she could wear it – are beautiful, then you just don’t deserve to see her it it.
Note: Maybe she already had the dress, maybe she bought it in town, or maybe (as many have suggested) most of her wardrobe is still in NYC so she had to borrow something from MM. It doesn’t matter where the dress came from, what matters is that she chose to wear it.I agree with the writer of this meta- we’ve known for ages Emma wears her clothes as metaphorical armor & we saw clearly in 3B the change in her clothing style (as mentioned) to reflect her change in persona, thanks to her cursed memories. Now she is the product of her cursed memories, along with her original memories combined & the understanding that has come about because of them both; in short she has chosen to let love back in & be more vulnerable with someone because of it. This dress perfectly reflects that IMO & as stated above, is nothing more than the culmination of Emma’s 3B emotional changes.

ParticipantSo I saw a fanfiction prompt on tumblr saying that Emma doesn’t wear Graham’s shoelace and the swan necklace anymore. I don’t think I’ve been paying attention much to notice, so is that really true?
Will let you know- I’m rewatching all 3eps of S3 tonight 🙂

ParticipantInteresting meta about the purpose of the date … it’s spoilery past the promo, but does include much the same speculation about the hand[spoiler] as we have had 🙂
[spoiler]I’ve had a few conversations over the last few days that have really had me thinking about this date intently. With the release of promo pictures, I was thrilled, we all were. But the more I looked at them, and the more discussions I watched, the more I began to think this date is not what we all think or want it to be.
The more I looked at the clothing, the more I realized things. Emma looks so young and innocent. The last time we saw her hair in a ponytail she was a seventeen year old dating Neal. In the pilot Emma’s dress was hot pink, and on her date with Walsh her dress was black. Both of those dresses were made to look sexy. This dress is pastel, with a much softer cut. It’s very pretty, but very different from any dress we’ve ever seen Emma in before.
Hook is also in modern clothing. He even went to the lengths to make a deal with Gold to get his hand back so he could embrace Emma with both hands. He even came prepared with a rose. Very different from the Killian anyone has known in the last three hundred or so years.Obviously on a first date, you aim to impress. You usually aren’t very much yourself on the first date at all. Everything that goes through your mind is going through a filter of how it could be perceived. You don’t want to come across any certain way. Most first dates are simple. We talk about the weather, movies, music, where we grew up, what our interests are, etc.
Over time you get to peel away the layers of the other person. We slowly show pieces of our souls and pasts that are difficult. We uncover the demons hiding in the closet. We get to see the worst of someone. We get to see how people react in all kinds of situations from intense situations to straight up frustrating situations We see them when they’re angry, upset, hurt. And usually it’s when we realize we love someone not despite these things, but because all of these things are a part of what makes them who they are, that we know we’ve found true love.
And here are Emma and Killian doing it in complete reverse. They’ve already seen each other’s ugly sides. He’s seen the pissed off mother, the exhausted savior, the brokenhearted daughter, etc. She’s seen the snarky flirt, the evil pirate, the scared man, etc. They’ve seen each other when they’re stuck in Neverland and haven’t showered for a week. They’ve seen each other when they have a near death experience. They’ve seen each other when at they’re at their worst.
And here they are together. They didn’t have to get dolled up and go on a first date to fall in love. They’re where they are because they fell in love with each other for exactly who they were in the rawest, most imperfect versions of themselves. I can’t think of a truer love.
And here they are trying to backpedal to the impression stage. In Emma’s case, he’s already seen her in the sexy red ball gown and fancy hairstyle. She’s showing him a softer, more innocent and vulnerable side. He’s showing her that he’s here to adapt to her world and that he’s not going anywhere.
I’ve also seen it pointed out that she is wearing neither Grahams shoelace or Neal’s necklace. Add the fact that she asked him on the date, it looks like Emma is moving forward.
I’ve wondered to myself what they’d talk about on this date. Could they even talk about the weather? They’ve been so busy with crises they probably haven’t even realized what the weather has been. What is Emma’s favorite flower? When has she even had five seconds to think about flowers? “What did you do this week?” “The same thing you did. Fought monsters, handled crises after crises, watched Netflix.”It’s not like they’re going to reveal their intimate pasts in a public place either. I think there could be some definite awkwardness coming their way.
Add in the embarrassing part of her parents trying to get back part of her life that they missed out on by being there with a camera, I think it’s a recipe for awkward.
I think this all has a point though. It’s not just for gratification. I think that this relationship is confusing because it is backwards from the normal and they’re in bizarre circumstances and situations. Right now they’re trying to figure it out and how and if it will work.
So what happens when the date gets awkward? What happens when the date goes wrong? What happens at the end of the date? What about the next day when Cinderella trades her dress for a red leather jacket? When the deal with Gold goes south and Hook is back to having a hook as opposed to a hand?
Realization comes. Emma doesn’t love Hook because of a change of clothes, flowers, or even being able to embrace her with both hands. Hook doesn’t love Emma for pretty dresses, high heels, and fancy hairdos. They love each other because of who they are. They don’t need sit down dinners or elaborate dates to figure that out. They already know.
Maybe it will take Killian being upset about his hook for Emma to express that she doesn’t care if he can hold her with both hands or not, she loves him regardless. Maybe this “normal” date to try and fall in love the normal way will cause them to realize that they aren’t normal. They don’t do things the normal way. They don’t need to impress each other to try and fall in love, they already love each other.
& she has bonus theory…
I’ve talked about the original Snow Queen story, and what the broken mirror shards could mean for different storylines. I think that if there is a shard of glass, Killian is the most likely recipient. Realizing that you truly love someone, only to have that someone suddenly only be able to see the ugly in you? Horrible. But solidifying that you love someone and don’t need elaborate dates because you already know their soul right before their whole makeup changes? Crucial.
Emma already told him that she can’t lose him too. What better way to foreshadow what’s coming up? Why not put that to the test? Why not see just how far she’s willing to go for the man that she truly loves. She knows his soul, and once she knows that and accepts that, we could see her fighting against everyone believing he’s just gone back to his pirate ways. She knows him like no one else. She may have to stand alone, but to see her be the one to fight against all odds for the one she loves would be an astounding and beautiful character development.
I really like that theory a lot!

<script async=”” src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js” charset=”utf-8″></script>At this point the haters are just hating for the sake of hating, because they have nothing plausible left to actually hate. I’m finding it laughable really… if we replaced Hook with Regina or Neal, they wouldnt have an issue with what Emma is wearing, it’s childish & vapid behavior, so whatever- some people obviously enjoy behaving like douche bags not just publicly, but globally 😉
IF they were watching the actual show as told, rather than as if it should be telling their own personal head cannons (cause how dare Adam & Eddy be telling their story LOL), then they’d have picked up the subtle & not so subtle signs since S3 that perfectly show the progression of Emma’s character & often how her wardrobe reflects that 🙂
I Love that tweet! 🙂usually couldn’t read the OUAT comments on TVLine stories last season because they were so ridiculously anti-Hook/CS (which in and of itself was ridiculous because everyone knows Matt Mitovich practically mans the helm of the CS ship so yeah, his articles are always going to slant pro-CS) but the articles that I’ve read this season directly on the site seem to contain a lot more positive comments. Not sure if people are coming around, CSers are just getting louder and the haters slinking away with their tails between their legs, or what…but it was refreshing. I don’t need others to squeal and go crazy like we do outside CS specific sites/our thread – just have respect for the character/ship, as I(we) try to have respect for others’. I really don’t think that’s asking too much.
Nope, not asking to much- ship & let ship & shipping is fun 😉
I’ve noticed the same thing re- less overt hate tbh.
I also have noticed after almost 2seasons of CS & Hook being brow based by 2-3 ships, CS’ers seem to be dropping firm but fair fact bombs on the haters (that writers, JMo, Colin, A&E for those!) & it’s worked a treat in most cases. All thats really left now is plain old hate for hatings sake- pure & simple. It’s almost like the show has gone through the haters arguments 1 by 1 & proven categorically how incorrect they are LOL- it’s quite refreshing not to have say “IMO” about “interpreting” what Hook or Emma is feeling these days as well lol 😉 -
