There have been one-liner indications (Snow’s “banditry” line in explaining to non-remembering Henry how she knew Emma from jail) that Emma’s past is known. It would be a brain-burp moment if the Charmings didn’t know the specifics of how their daughter wound up in jail, but then, Emma isn’t a glowing symbol of informative openess.

They know Emma was in Phoenix jail (& for what) from S1 when Sydney dug up the dirt on her thanks to Regina- Emma however didnt tell them who got her put there- as far as we know.

IF they know, however, and went ahead naming their child after a man with direct ties to considerable pain and grief to their daughter, it reeks of insensitive stupidity. I hope, for that reason, they don’t know the ugly details. I don’t want Snow and Charming to be that dense.

Which is why I fully believe that they dont know what exactly went down & am disappointed that we probably wont ever see them know it- they’ll simply sweep it under the ‘forget about it’ rug. *sigh* Oh well :/

Naming the baby Neal most likely came from Snow. She was very pro-Neal despite having no reason to be so pro-Neal. The only way Snowing can know about Neal abandoning Emma in jail and still think positively of him is if they see it from his view as a big sacrifice to get Emma home rather than from Emma’s view that she was abandoned by the guy she loved. Still, at most Neal should’ve been a middle name rather than the baby’s first name. Snowing also need to learn that when something goes wrong, it’s actually possible to be the work of someone else other than Rumple or Regina.

    Agreed.

    1. After asking Neal if he knew who she was when they met, when he says no, Emma replies “So if you didn’t know, you were just using me, you just needed someone to take the fall for all the watches that you stole”. That’s what Emma believed for 11 years. No wonder she has severe trust issues. She met a guy she thought was the love of her life and loved her in return and instead he abandons her to take the fall for his crime. 2. Neal seems shocked that Emma made a deal with Rumple. As he says later to Rumple “I’ve seen what you do to people who break deals”. So why does Neal encourage Emma to break her deal with Rumple by MAKING A DEAL with her? Neal says to Emma she should lie to Rumple, “you do that, you never have to see me again”. Neal is a mix of Milah and Rumple rolled into one. I think the choice of not to pursue SwanFire was made during season 2, however I think the choice to kill Neal was not made until halfway through 3A. Season 2 Neal was very bitter towards Rumple. In SSTTR, Neal was telling Rumple to stay away from him, that’s the last words they spoke to each other before Neverland. In Neverland, once Neal found out Rumple might want to kill Henry, he wanted nothing to do with Rumple. Neverland was only about a week timeline wise. By the end of it, Neal suddenly forgave Rumple. It was a nice scene but still, bit of a quick turnaround, almost as if they were suddenly trying to tie up the loose ends of Neal’s story. Unless Neal suddenly got a case of the “I could’ve had it a lot worst”, he should’ve at least still been a bit wary of Rumple.

Absolutely agree with all 3 of your points.

Yup @priceofmagic . You got it. Let’s look at another piece of dialogue from that scene:

Emma: Did you know who I was when we met? Neal: If I had, I wouldn’t have gone near you.

Imagine how hurtful that is for Emma to hear Neal say that to her. Regardless if that was the truth or not, it still hurts her because she loved him, was excited to have a life with him and a home for the first time in her life. And Neal just admitted if he knew who she was, he wouldn’t have gone near her AT ALL. I think that’s why I can’t ‘ship it. Emma Swan is an amazing, beautiful woman and deserves better than that. She needs all encompassing love, love that has faith in her, her abilities and appreciates her for the wonderful person she is. And Hook is all of these things for Emma and more. and then, there’s this from Hook:

Emma: So, do you think Rumpelstiltskin was right? I’m in the book now. (Hook chuckles) He said everything, besides our little adventure, would go back to normal. Do you think that it is? Hook: He’s right. Otherwise I’d remember that damned bar wench I kissed. (Emma smiles.) Emma: How would that prove anything? Hook: I know how you kiss. I’d have gone after her.

But here’s where Hook greatly contrasts with Neal. Had he remembered Emma, he would have gone after her regardless of who she was. As soon as soon as past-Hook met Emma, she was the only one that mattered and I truly present-Hook’s assessment about that meeting. There’s no reason not to believe that past-Hook’s attraction to bar wench Emma would not have turned into love later and if it did, guess what, he doesn’t need to pursue his revenge anymore. He would have given it all up then for the opportunity for a second chance at a happy ending. And we know this is true because he wanted a chance with Bae to start over, for a second chance but he was denied that opportunity.

Yep, I’m the same- I cant ship Emma with anything but the deepest, loyalest, strongest of love, it’s nothing less than she deserves & I never got that from Neal, but did/do from Hook/Killian.

Will use spoiler tags in case anyone reading this thread hasnt watched Ep5 yet, but my favorite part of the ep was probably when Claire found out the guys were defending her honor- that whole part was so brilliantly played- from Claire’s “here we go…” as the men met out punishment highland style, for bad mouthing one of ‘their’ ladies, to Claire’s reaction when finding out they were brawling to defend her

& that ending….. I seriously went “What?! No! Darn it” … I thought for a sec the end had been cut off or something LOL

I’ve just thought of something, Hook knows that Neal sent Emma to jail. She mentioned it to him after Neal’s funeral. But whether she told her parents, I’ve know idea. Seems strange it hasn’t come out though. Surely they must have wondered why Emma was so resistant to getting back with Neal.

Yep exactly, I think someone asked if we would get Snowing/Charming’s reaction to Neal having Emma sent to jail, after Charming decked Hook last season & A&E said ‘yes we would’, but we havent, so I doubt it’ll be off screen stuff, unless it’s referenced on screen as such.
I guess when you think about it, there’s been metric crap ton of sh…sugar gone down since E11, but there’s no more excuses not to touch on it now- Emma is starting a new relationship, so surely it’ll come up & we at least get WTH?! reactions from Snowing- as it’s a long time coming- I dont even want to consider if they dont touch on it, as they’d have Not been ok with what he did to her. It’d be OOC for them to sweep that under the rug like it was nothing, given the crap Snow gave Charming for not telling her about the dreamshade poisoning :/

    Yep, totally agree with POM.
JMo, A&E also said Emma’s “I love you” to Neal, was said to someone she thought she’d never see again & in that situation, where things are happening & someones dying you say things you’d never ordinarily say.

Yup, and I think it would be inappropriate if Emma cried the reverse to Neal in that situation too, that she hated him for abandoning her. It goes back to that general feeling, when someone close you is about to die, you don’t want them to leave this world with a bad feeling, but a positive one. It’s why Emma called her parents “mom” and “dad” in 2×22.

But I think it also makes it clear, when she tells Hook that she loves him, it needs not be in a high stress situation. The first ‘I love you’ needs to come out naturally in order for it to have an emotional impact, not something forced. I think that’s really important.

Oh, for sure- I couldnt agree more.

    Agree with the above!

In regard to Neal, I have to say, re-watching S2 during the hiatus…it’s been tough to watch. I guess because I’m watching much more closely, but I cannot believe when he laughs at her, or belittles her or talks down to her. It’s funny, you see Neal assume Emma still loves him, you see Rumple tell her she still has feelings for him, you see Snow doing it…but you never really see Emma’s reaction – ‘I don’t still love him/want to get back together with him’ – waver. Until that very moment the portal opens. And as said, what are you going to do when you assume someone’s headed for imminent death? Tell them they suck and ruined your life? No, you try to part with the most positive feelings you’ve had for that person, and push the bad away for that final moment. It’s human nature. But Emma’s declarations at the portal don’t tell me she still was in love with him and wanted to be with him again. Her actions when she finds out he’s alive, though? What part of “I wished you really were dead” screams ‘let’s get back together!!’ What part of hiding out at the docks and standing him up (oh, and wondering if dear ol’ Dad’s just trying to keep you from another man) says ‘I love you!’ Except for that one moment at the portal, I don’t ever see present-tense Emma even momentarily contemplating resuming their romantic relationship.

Yes, exactly- I’ve been rewatching S2 as well (decided to do a total rewatch to fill in the time until S4 starts 😉 ) & have reached the same conclusions, even in hind sight I just dont see Emma investing in anything other than her past with Neal.

And I also don’t know for sure if Emma really told anyone exactly what Neal (and August) did to her. We know Henry knows because she “told” him in their false memories, but beyond that I either don’t know or don’t remember. But I do wonder if Snow would’ve still pushed Emma toward Neal if she’d known that he had sent her to jail for his crime and while she was pregnant, no less. Come to think of it, we really need more clarification about who knows what regarding a lot of things on this show…

    Agreed on the clarification 100000000%
I am still miffed we didnt actually get Snowing’s response to what he did to Emma- A&E said it would be addressed, but it hasnt as far I as I can recall & I doubt they’ll go there now he’s dead…. or maybe they will…. do you guys think it might come up as part of the ‘trouble’ Emma has with the relationship?

This was such a great episode.

    A few random notes.

    1) that green coat Claire was wearing in the opening scene: ye gods. need. like….NEED

    2) the scenery of this show is breathtaking

    3) loved Claire’s “here we go…” before the fight

    4) Jamie sleeping outside her door!

    5) really nice seeing the smaller villages of the Highlands. such interesting people and culture

    6) the ending = AHH!

    I know right!
I’m loving the little tweaks to the story because in cases like the ending of this ep, you dont know which why they’ll swing.
