ParticipantOh, by the way Lola, I get Outlander through Starz on my Kindle Fire. Not sure if that is a doable for Canadian viewers, though. Sorry I didn’t answer you before! I missed the question. They had the premiere online for free for a bit. It has, so far, been quite magnificent.
When I read the books (I got through the first 3 before becoming exhausted a third of the way into the 4th!) I figured there was no way they could personify Jamie. Even back then people always speculated who would play certain well-loved literary figures in movies. The Jamie in my mind was so vivid to me, I didn’t want it being spoiled (cough Lestat cough) by a sub-par actor portrayal. It was pure magic in my brain and there was no way I felt it could be done justice in a big splashy Hollywood film. I am so very glad it didn’t make it to the big screen. There really WAS no Jamie in existence in the acting world.
Serialized TV, on cable is the perfect way to go. And season two has already been ordered up, I hear
I think Clare is spot on to my mind’s portrayal. And well…
Isn’t Jamie just perfect after all??? Smiling even now as I write this. Just abso-verrrra-lutely perrrrfect.
The 1st episode is still out on the Starz site, it’s also on youtube 🙂
Haha, I did that with the GOT books lol … but now I’ve decided not to read those books anymore, as the show is too different.Totally agree with you on the TV series over movie/s. A movie or even series of movies just would not have done the story justice at all! In all honestly the 1st ep felt in many ways, like a big budget movie with the speculator back drops & the way it was shot etc.
I’m hoping Peter Jackson will get it together & finally get started on the Temeraire TV series- which he decided would make a better tv series than movie series for the same reasons as Outlander (however, dude be dragging the chain on that project & I want Napoleon’s war on dragon back now, darn it!)Yep they have a season 2 already- I believe Outlander’s ratings have brought in recorded breaking highs for Starz & many are calling it the next GOT (as in massive mass following) 😉
Having watched ep1 before reading the books, I kind of think of the actors as the characters, but the book Jamie I thought of as ‘bigger’physically/bulk wise (kind of like a Chris Hemsworth/Thor type body) & darker haired than TV Jamie lol- however TV Jamie is the ‘perfect’ Jamie in spirit & that translates into looks as well, he simply ‘is’ Jamie for me now & I suspect, that just like Daniel Radcliffe took over my mental ‘book’ image of Harry Potter- (he looked nothing like what I originally pictured Harry looking like in my mind), Sam Heughan will do the same with Jamie & that’s soooooooooo not a bad thing lol 😉
Clare is spot on to my minds eye as well- maybe just a little taller if I had to nit pick about something lol, otherwise I cant fault anything at all about her- That moment Jamie tells her to come or he’ll throw her over his shoulder, the actress’s expression was just pure Clare & when she drinks out of the wine bottle- sold me totally on Clare.
They certainly hit the Outlander casting jackpot!I also love the fact they dont subtitle the Gaelic & they allow us into Clare’s thoughts through the little bits of narrative- it really draws you into the world & really puts you as a viewer, into experiencing the story through Clare’s perspective- just like in the book.

ParticipantI’m loving everything about this series. The cinematography, the vision, the detail, the dedication to Celtic soul, the characterizations, lighting, mood. Splendid.
I recall reading the books and thinking afterward that when I walked out the door, I should have been surrounded by the Highlands and men should have been in kilts :)…and all looking and sounding like Jamie.
ahhhh escapism, thy name is Outlander.
I know right & I love that it’s a bit of everything as well- it’s not just historical, or fantasy, or romance, or science fiction etc. It’s encompasses everything & it’s kind of nice that are sticking quite faithfully to the book.
I will admit to enjoying the fact that unlike GOT, a third of the cast hasnt been, or isn’t in danger of getting killed off with-in the 1st 3eps lol 😉I actually binged read Outlander after watching Ep1 & now cant decide if I should read book 2-7 yet or not lol.

ParticipantTLK…dunno, but I am certainly not adverse to having them try a few hundred times (grin) IF the “kiss of life” wasn’t already the “one”.
TLK really doesn’t affect me as much. Honestly, now that I give it a moment’s thought, I don’t put much stock in definitive kisses. I kind of embrace all off them into one big telling/sharing/soul revealing/tactile /magical/ complex acceptance of “being”.
ONCE’s appeal to me is a much bigger mind universe of here, now, then, before, after, what if…the voyeuristic appeal of seeing someone else’s brain fantasy in script form. Anything can and will happen and I just go with the flow of being out of control about the whole deal!
moving on from Sunday existentialist pontificating …(la la la)
Jamie and Clare…I have a date with them this evening, surayya! And I could certainly chime in on The Outlander thread now n then
Ancestorally being a good Scot (Clan Sutherland!) I get verra easily lost in the wondrous highlands for hours after watching wee lass Gabaldon’s world come to the small (Kindle Fire) screen
Lady, I concur! There is not much that is healthy about the relentless obsession of dead-fictional character agony. Wrapped up in? Well perhaps more Warped than wrapped. Or wrapped too tight or…well. It is an embarrassing downer part of the fandom at this point.
In some form or another, almost every fandom has it’s …mucking fuglies…as we used to call them long long ago in a fandom far far away
“Are you not entertained?? ARE you NOT ENTERTAINED?”
…no, Maximus, (grin and a gladiatorial wink) we are mighty bored by it all at this point.
I get you on the TLK thing- When Emma kissed Graham, he got his memories back- so she broke the curse on him & yet there was no ‘whoosh of rainbow light’ & every other instance of actual curse breakage has been with TLK & had the ‘rainbow whoosh’ effect …. including when Emma kissed Killian, so I’m still on the fence- did she really loose her magic or not. It is still debatable & it wouldnt surprise me if that ‘whoosh’ was put there as a tease, that’ll pay off later down the track when/if we get a cannon TLK.
Yay, will be nice to talk about something with no sour grapes attached to it, will see you in that thread later on 😀

ParticipantGotta add, loving the Scottish accents! I’ve always been a sucker for Irish & Scottish accents- it makes the guys 10% hotter than they are IMO lol 😛

ParticipantSo happy that you like it RG. @Bo-Peeps and @surayya, were you both able to see the preview episode outside the US? Wont let me play it from the link because I’m in Canada. Guess I’ll have to wait for the Aug 24th premier here
Sorry I missed your post!
I have a proxy so can see whatever wherever, I just change gateways if needed.Have you seen it yet? Cant wait to hear your thoughts- I’m up to episode 3 already, so I’m glad I didnt just pop in & start blindly fangirling my heart out lol
The scenery is amazing isnt it RG…. Jamie & the horse flesh are pretty impressive as well (I’m quite taken with the grey saddle cob lol) 😉
I’m not sure what else I can say, as dont want to spoil it for anyone 🙂surayya
ParticipantI got the rose coloured glasses from 2 places… but I assume you are referring to the Sf thread in this case? (I dont go in there & only know about some of the weird stuff they say due to 2nd hand accounts from someone/s who do have a nosy around many of threads on this site … I dont even know if they are a member or active on this site tbh, but anyway wicked
words gets back to those with burning ears one way or another lol). Oh, dont you worry I find it hilarious that those whom enjoy the show & see it how its intended to be watched = watching through rose coloured glasses, I had a good belly laugh (followed by an intense coughing session *hate being sick*)…. if thats what they need to think to get themselves to sleep at night- good luck to them lol
No, I haven’t been in that thread for a while (when I have ventured in there I found it strange and nothing to do with SF weirdly enough) I’m just going off what you’ve said. But exactly, shock horror we are watching in the way the writers intended. My god, how dare we??? How dare we enjoy a show the way it was inteded to be enjoyed. They totally don’t make any sense. I hope you feel better soon. *hugs* I had that horrible cough thing for weeks and still not over it completely.
Funny you say that, as from what I’ve been told you are bang on about it having little to do with SF – whatever floats their boats I guess 🙂 I refuse to go in that particular thread as I quite like my sanity lol 😉
Aww, Thanks- yes it’s been a month & I still havent been able to shake this horrid cough- the last 10days have seen me on bed rest (it turned into pneumonia, because I’m an idiot & didnt stop), so I’ve had heaps of time over the last few days to catch up on the online gossip 🙂As an aside- is anyone else here watching Outlander? If not, give it a try, it’s really good.
*Swim’s waaaaaaaaaaaaaay down the shallow end of the pool* Jamie is hot!… the horse flesh is really nice as well- for anyone else who notices those things 😉
Might be a nice change from the negativity being spouted by septic ‘fans’ on this site, if us Outlander fans maybe started up a discussion in the outlander thread on here (at least, I’m pretty sure I didnt dream there was an outlander thread on here o.O ) Any takers?surayya
ParticipantHAhahahaha! I now have a new, all time favorite gif set (grin) Many, many thanks, surayya!! “Things”~ Our new “wink wink” code word (hubba hubba)
Creative, joyful, and funny people….gotta love em. And speaking of “gotta love em”…the only weapon to use against obsessive killjoys is to…be happier than they are miserable
Drives em crazy. Refuse to be part of the joy-sucking sludge. It is a masochistic person who once they have made their feelings known, continually complains and whines when they could remedy their misery by just going somewhere else or finding positive things where they are. Their choice is their sad folly. Troll fans. Blog/Site killers. However, there is one month and a handful of days before all these lovely visuals we’ve been spoiling ourselves with come together with words and storylines, sass and sauciness, torment and tyranny, lust and longing, accents and eye emoting and …ahhh…new leatherrrrrr. (Even for our girl Emma!) It’s going to be an adventure! (When can we expect Henry to get his first motorcycle jacket, eh??? His true test of growing up…can he pull off the leather look??? )
Hehehe, who needs tacos when you have “things” 😉
& yeah, thats why I have to laugh at the double standards – it’s that or let the haters win by leaving 😉
I’m not sure that looking through rose-tinted glasses is actually an insult in the way they mean it. Besides, so what if we are? It’s not our fault if they can’t find anything in the show to enjoy. Who cares. There are many shows I don’t like that the rest of the world seem to love. This is my little guilty pleasure. I don’t care if it’s never going to get critic accolades, becasue quite frankly a lot “critically acclaimaed” things are just boring. I’m happy to be paddling around in the shallow end enjoying a lot of eye candy. *giggles* Wonderful, now when I hear the word ‘things’ I’ll be giggling to myself. Just like when I was watching PotC: At World’s End when they kept on referring to Elizabeth as Captain Swann. I think my housemate thought I was slightly mental.

I wont even go into some of the crap I’ve heard recently re. a certain small but vocal faction of the fandom. I mean seriously they should take a step back for their own well being if they truly believe what they are saying & not just trolling- It might just be me, but I cant find things that really do border on, if not cross into mental illness, funny- obvious sour grapes yes, total rubbish yes, ignoring fact to suit themselves, of course- but people so deeply emotionally invested in fiction they are depressed or sad whenever they think about the show…. no, not funny IMO. I genuinely would rather those fans took a step back & got help if they needed it, than continue to immerse themselves in something that makes them so depressed or sad.surayya
Participantsurayya
ParticipantLOL- apparently if you like/enjoy the show still & want it to continue, you are wearing rose coloured glasses Bahahahahahahahahaha.
Gotta love how the septic faction try to justify their bashing & hate by saying that anyone who doesnt agree with them is “wrong”- god I love the stupidity of this fandom for a good belly laugh. It really is a petty person who wants a show to tank just because their favorite character/ship has been killed off .
*goes to giggle in the corner*
On a more serious note I really dont understand why those who have lost interest/enjoyment in the show continue to badger & try bring down those who derive pleasure & enjoyment of it still- are these people really that self/ship absorbed & selfish that they begrudge others the enjoyment of something, simply because they dont anymore?!
I actually have to pity some of the posters (& yes even some from this site/chat), as they seem to lead rather hollow lives given they’ve invested so much of their own personal happiness in the well being of a fictional character & given they seem to have a distinct lack of ability to grasp the difference between reality & fiction- I really, seriously dont understand ‘mourning’ & b!tching about the death of a fictional character 5mths after the fact- the lengths some folks (even on here) have taken it too all but screams mental health issues to me & I do hope these people get the help they seem to need in their lives.
It almost seems like instead of ship wars, this site is turning into positive Oncers vs negative Oncers which is a shame, as this site used to be a great one :/
surayya
ParticipantI only think they look similar because they are shot in a similar fashion, everyone’s pics last season looked ‘the same’ because they all got shot the same manner- just clothing, poses & some of the genders where different- it’s the exact same deal here IMO 🙂 Cant wait to see the rest of the casts pics!
