ParticipantLOL, just noticed on a totally non- Once or even TV, related forum (talking mostly Equine genetics- so about as far from OUAT as you can get), that a couple of the users must be big CS fans, as unlike everyone elses equine related avatars, a select few have CS avatars LOL! Goes to show the power of our ship- it sails across science based forums as well as fiction based ones š

ParticipantYep, I tend to agree A&E tried to define TL & SM to keep everyone happy- although they could have done that by simply stating āthey are one in the sameā.
I think this would have upset me more because what I would really want to know, is what the difference is between the two. If they said they were the same, it would retcon a lot of things. Cora and Rumple for instance. They were stated to be soulmates but their kiss wasnāt true loveās kiss because it didnāt break his curse. Only Belle did that.
But then whats the point in discussing that TL & SM is just semantics?
We cant say all love is ‘TL’ or truly loving someone = TL, then say ‘except for this couples love… because well they have to be special & those guys dont have the same love because then this couple wont be special’- it goes back to my 1st post bringint it up… well I guess we can say those things, but you know what I mean lol š
The same way I dont think we can say Soul mates = a deeper love or connection or whatever, than say TL, because if we say SM = only one person for you, does that make it deeper then TL, since TL = simply truly loving someone?
Personally, I think they are essentially the same thing – TL & SM, just the mode of “getting” to the level of ‘working TLK’ is different.
Love= eventual developing of feelings after the moment of meeting.
TL = a love connection almost from the moment of meeting.
SM = a soul connection from the moment of meeting.
All types of love can turn into TLK, love (IMO), so that TLK will work for the 3 types of love, making it ‘TL’ by default…. if that makes sense? š
Edited to add: Not ALL Love & Soul Mates automatically turn into TL, these couples need to work to a greater or lesser degree to achieve ‘functioning TLK’ status.
The “TL” couples- you know the types- almost instantly fall for each other, never have eyes for another & end up growing old together- even if they fight it at first š They dont have to work so hard at attaining ‘working TLK’ status, because for them, their love is so all consuming, they are more like one entity, than separate individuals in a relationship.
Soul Mates are those that instantly meet & feel they’ve met their other-self- they feel most confident & comfortable confiding inĀ each otherĀ above all others/ have a level of trust that just seems to be there- no matter if they fight it at first or not (ie CS Vs OQ- Emma fought her SM connection with Killian, Regina didnt fight her SM connection with Robin- yet both women still seem to unconsciously seek support from their other half’s out esp when poop hits the fan, as do the men & both allow a level of frankness & closeness that isnt afforded to others- ie. Emma on the park bench with Killian & Regina on the log with Robin). Now theses couples dont have to work so hard for the ease & trust- it’s already there (even if past experiences interfere, the desire to trust this person is still there) & obviously SMs will love each other in one form or another (friendship, best friends, lovers or TL) by default, but they CAN work on & develop their relationship to get that next level of love- TLK level.
Love is the same as Soul Mates, but that level of comfort & trust 1st has to be developed BEFORE they can then develop into TLK level- much like Rumple & Belle’s situation- I’m sure there was more feelings of despair & indifference at the start of their relationship, slowly they developed a comfort with each other, this developed into trust, which developed into friendship, then love, then TL.
So what I’m saying is not all Love is necessarily ‘TLK’ love, but that ALL Love can be developed into TLK level love, which automatically means if TLK works, that they have TL, which makes “them one in the same” when it comes to ‘outcomes’.

ParticipantWhatās interesting is why, upon meeting Hook again, did Rumple ask āHowās Milah?ā He seemed saddened when Hook said she was dead and then proposed finishing the duel. Why did Rumple seem to think Milah was still alive until Hook said she was dead?
I’dĀ assumed he’d “looked her up” DarkOne/ FTL style lol š I think the problem we get a lot with the show is we get fixed in our thinking of what happened to these characters from S1, then S2 etc. then a new season starts & we get new back story that sometimes contradicts where or how we thought things worked out from there + a lot of ‘stuff’ gets mentioned in passing, so manyĀ reactions/responses/ what happens goes down off screen, leaving us fans with a single sentence (in many cases) as conclusion or reference.
Yep, I tend to agree A&E tried to define TL & SM to keep everyone happy- although they could have done that by simply stating “they are one in the same”.
The way I’m going to choose to look at it from here on out is this:
Love- You meet & may or may not be attracted to the other, but over time develop feelings then love for the other & it turns into TL- ie. RumpBelle.
True Love- You meet & there is a spark of love there almost right way, which develops/gets stronger as time goes on & turns into TL- ie. Snowing.
Soul Mates- You meet & there is a spark of total understanding (not sure how to word it… ‘read you like a book’ comes to mind lol) right away, which develops/gets stronger as time goes on & turns into TL- ie CS & OQ.
So for my interpretation of the 3 concepts, is not so much the end product that differs- not one of the 3 concepts results in a less powerful love, than any of the others, it’s simply the starting point that differs between the 3 š

ParticipantI think the main problem with Milah is that the first time we see her, she is being particularly horrible to Spinner Rumple. The audience has gotten to know Rumple throughout season 1, we saw how he was treated in Desperate Souls and to see his own wife treat him like that instantly put Milah on a lot of disliked lists. Spinner Rumple is a very pitiful character to the point that you just want to give him a hug and tell him things will be okay.
Yeah, see despite liking Rumple & knowing his story, I still didnt dislikeĀ Milah when she was introduced. But then I wasnt watching through the filter of “poor Rumple” either, frankly much of his pitiful ‘adult’ situation is self induced IMO- I cant abide by people leaning of ‘stuff’ that happens in the past as a reason/excuse for not getting their sh..poop together & getting on with life… From my own observations & experiences living as a ‘victim’ is a choice. All I saw was a woman stuck in a horrible situation (created by her husband’s choices- NOT her choices), who had the balls to walk out of a controlling, loveless marriage, so I applaud her for that. Could she have handled her situation with Rumple better- Of course! I dont hold her leaving Bae against her because A&E addressed that already- Milah “KNEW Rumple was a good father” (being a good husband & being a good father dont go hand in hand- some men are total pigs to their girlfriend or wife, yet worship their children/their own flesh & blood) & that she “didnt feel a pirate ship was a safe place to raise a young child”- fair enough.
Also I donāt think Rumple had much choice other than to tell Bae that Milah was dead, the truth that Rumple had been led to believe was much more horrifying. Rumple didnāt know Milah left of her own accord (and how exactly could he tell Bae that his mother chose to abandon him?), Rumple had been led to believe that Milah had been kidnapped and was going to be raped by a ship full of pirates. Why on earth would he tell his young son that?
He could have told Bae his mother was kidnapped & he (Rumple) wouldnt fight to save her (which is what that line “a man unwilling to fight for what we wants deserves what he gets). But agree he wouldnt have said that & lets face it, they couldnt have had the events play out any other way as they needed Milah to be the wedge between Hook & Rumple & they needed Milah out of the way so Rumple would become the darkone- as Obisgirl said “Milah, like Neal was a plot device” š
I would love to see Milah fleshed out more. Sadly, I doubt she will be back. I remember Bobby C. saying that Rachel (the actress) got the most hate mail. That blogger made a good point that I never noticed. Rumple never apologizes to Milah for destroying their lives and marriage. Yet he makes Milah apologize to him. What is sad is that she is being condemned for abandoning her son, but she left him with a loving parent. Yet Rumple abandoned Bae and left Bae alone and defenseless to hang onto his power. I donāt understand how Rumple being abandoned by Malcolm explains or in a way excuses what he did to Bae or why he wouldnāt move for a fresh start with Milah. I like Rumple as entertainment. Heās a great character fun to watch and his motivations are understandable, meaning you understand what drives and can see things from his point of view. BUT he is an extremely selfish man. Everything is about him. I think the spinsters did him a disservice raising him to believe that he was a superspecial snowflake that everyoneās life should revolve around his āpainā and needs, without any consideration to others. Maybe it was genetic. Malcolm was similar.
Agree with everything you say hereĀ sweetgrass- everything š

ParticipantLittle bit off topic, but really love this meta on the whole Milah/Rumple relationship with ties to Killian & Bae (I know we’ve discussed Milah a few times & this brings up/ points out, things about her & that whole Rumple/Milah/Killian situation, that I think even we’ve missed in our discussions lol). Although I dont agree with absolutely every point made, over all it is thought provoking & I find myself agreeing with the vast majority of what is written š

ParticipantMajor CS Spoiler Alert: http://www.eonline.com/videos/224613/ouat-creators-tease-frozen-cross-over-surprises Hook and Emma go on a proper date. I wonder if that is why Hook got new clothes. As for the whole True Love/Soul Mate discussion, I donāt think Eddie and Adam gave it much thought so the answer was rambling and non-sensical.
Haha, love Colin photo-bombing A&Es interviewĀ & agreed.
Hehe this is a great Colin interview (Colin really did like Emma’s wench costume :P)

ParticipantInstead of analyzing the clumsy reply given, Iām more inclined to shake my head at A&E and stick with my own interpretation:
Yeah, exactly what I’m doing- the answer they gave DOES change cannon on the show, so in this one case (ok- lies, 2nd case – I cant stand the name Snowing gave their baby- I just find it way creepy that they called their son after their daughters Ex boyfriend- the guy who trampled her heart, taught her it was good to be aĀ criminal, got her pregnant as a teenager, let her rot in prison & abandoned her- so I’ll call him anything but that š ) I’m just gonna ignore their ”oh crap- didnt expect that question’ response & go off of what they’ve had the characters on screen actually tell us in dialogue multiple times already.
