You know what we haven’t seen yet? Rumple going to his son’s grave. Is there a reason why they show decided to skip that.
Son? What son?

textbookoneParticipantI’ll be here all summer, to help lower your expectations of this new season. I mean we wouldn’t want to get all hopeful and stuff. We all know what A&E do with hope. They CRUSH it.
I’m now humming the jingle for Lowered Expectations (from MADtv I believe) in my head. Curse you Sad Twin!
How about Elsa freezes Hook completely, so Emma has to try and free him with TLK, but she can’t get near him. And there are woes (but none of any real substance, because that’s how Once rolls these days), which how they justify CS having their own hardship.

textbookoneParticipantLinking for language but ALL OF THIS. And this sentence in particular just got me: “they’re not just on the same page. they’re filling in each other’s blanks.”
emma spent her whole life looking for someone to let in and neal spent his looking for someone to let him in. neal’s been left with this aching for home, and emma’s aching to know what that’s even like. emma’s trying to figure him out in that scene; neal’s giving her all his story that he can because he needs someone to ask. emma needed hope because she’d never had it, neal needed hope because he’d lost it. they’re not just on the same page. they’re filling in each other’s blanks.
shoot me in the face–WHY?!
I’ll be over here in this corner with my feelings.Running off to read the whole thing now, but ye gods is that beautiful! I just want to incorporate all of that into my Sad Neal fic, but I should probably ask first.
@Corbin – HUGS! Oh so many HUGS! I know we don’t really know each other (because I never hang out on the chat), but I’ve had my fair share of family crap go down over the years and even then I can’t even begin to understand how everything you’ve experienced must feel. Just remember that you’re strong and you’re not alone. Lots of love baby bison. Lots of love.Co-Mayor of Sad Town | Twin of Co-Mayor of Sad Town | #HopeforRogueBison
textbookoneParticipantIf You Love Someone
If you love someone, you do what’s best for them, even if it’s not what’s best for you.
What Neal and Emma had wasn’t a romance, it was love. Complete and total, unconditional and selfless love. It’s not lust, nor romance. It’s not a spur of the moment thing. It’s love. Plain and simple.
Neal loved Emma. Period. There’s nothing else to it.
Now if one of the main themes in the show is, “True love conquers anything,” then why did they end one of the truest loves on the show?

textbookoneParticipantI was typing something larger on transit this morning and this part started happening. I don’t know yet if/where it will fit in the larger scheme of what I was writing, but I felt like sharing this now in case it turns into nothing.
I bought into the potential of their beautiful love story because I don’t have one of my own. I bought in to mantra of hope and happy endings because I live in fear everyday that I won’t get one of my own. I loved Neal and Swanfire for so many reasons, but among them being that I don’t need or want an epic love story with a charming and daring rapscallion or prince. I just want a solid love story, one that feels true down to my bones. I don’t need adventure, I just want home. I want to be with someone who’s arms feel safe, who is my equal. I want a love story with forgiveness and patience. I want to know that however we are separated, by time or by distance, that fate will bring us together again. It will take work, but we’ll be stronger for it in the end, and it will make us better people.
I have never seen a relationship on TV, a connection closer to what I want than Swanfire, and all the things it had the potential of being. Swanfire may not have gotten a chance to see through all these possibilities, but there was so much potential, so many ways it could have played out. Swanfire was my hope and my escape, but it is a story that will remain without the end I was so hoping for. It makes me look at my own life and wonder if that hope for a love story, that hope for a happy ending will be just as unfulfilled.

textbookoneParticipantGoing back and reading other reviews by Alex Cranz, I really appreciated this part of the review for 315:
There were two things the show and the actors consistently got right though. One was Gold and Neal. They were father and son and portrayed all the recrimination and reluctant affection that would be found between a former orphan and the father who had abandoned him. Neal was always at his best when he was calling Gold out for his selfishness and reminding him of why he didn’t want to have a conversation with him.
The other was Emma and Neal. There was history in their every interaction. Emma’s anger, confusion and love, and Neal’s wistfulness and longing for a romance he’d utterly destroyed by his own hands. They were always “what might have been” in a show that usually looked towards fate and the future for its romances.
And naturally in their final episode together they were at their best, sharing fun moments and grounding the oft operatic show in something sublimely real.
In losing Neal the show and Emma are quite alike. They’re not losing a great love or a critical character, but they’re losing the wonderful potential for something–someone–that could have been great.

That was really good @Rainbow. Thanks for the link! Alex Cranz makes some really good points. I just wish there were more voices like this out there, and that they were loud enough to get more attention and respect than just “people whining because they don’t like things”. This was some of my favourite points:
It was a gradual shift, but one day Emma and Mary Margaret were no longer main characters. There was Regina, there was the menfolk, and then there was them. Their relationship on the show has suffered. Delicious mother/daughter drama has been left un-mined so the show can explore the motivations of wicked witches and dastardly pirates.
Emma in particular has struggled. While Mary Margaret has been sidelined, the few times she has been given a chance to guide the story its been alone, or in an effort to explore her relationship with Regina (and Ariel). Emma, on the other hand, has spent an entire season hunting for her son and dodging penises.

textbookoneParticipantNot quoting anyone, because multiple people have been talking about it, but I 100% agree about Emma not really knowing Hook, not without knowing his history. It’s one thing to have a connection with someone, where you can claim something lame like “knowing their soul”, but that’s only one layer of a person, and if you don’t know their history, if you don’t know their past, how much do you really know about a person? They say that if you don’t know your history, you’re bound to repeat it. I wouldn’t be surprised if people start making the same mistakes again, more so than they already have.
That said, I’ve always thought that Neal and Emma just click so well because they spent months living in tight quarters with each other. As we saw in 322, Neal opened up to Emma pretty much from the beginning. I’m sure Emma was the harder nut to crack, the one who held personal information in longer, but in Tallahassee she was open and warm to Neal. Maybe I’m grasping at straws, filling in the blanks because we simply don’t know for sure, but how can you live with someone in the back of a car for months and not know them inside and out?
Maybe, given time Hook and Emma can get there, but right now they have nothing on what Neal and Emma had. He told her him name from the start, he wasn’t trying to be evasive or mysterious, he just opened right up. First date he tells her about his dad. Neal wore his heart on his sleeve and was just openly him from the start. The whole thing just sucks so much…
I don’t even know what I’m trying to say anymore. I’m just a jumble of words and feelings right now. Sorry for the word barf.

textbookoneParticipantI was also wondering why you decided to have Snow and Charming name their baby “Neal” instead of “Baelfire.”
Horowitz: Honestly, because they’re in Storybrooke. We realize that Prince Baelfire sounds better, but I just felt like if he’s going to go to kindergarten, “Neal” might be easier to swallow. But it is Storybrooke; he could always be Baelfire in the Enchanted Forest.…What ?
Like I said in the thread about the article, he’s either Neal, or he’s Baelfire. The baby doesn’t get to be both by default. Pick one and stick with it, A&E. Neal was his chosen moniker, Baelfire was his birth name. Almost everyone knew him as Neal. So are you naming the baby for the person you knew, or the boy Rumple lost? 1 name. Not both. Prince-ling Namestealer Neal is a new character, a new person. Nealfire is someone else and you don’t get to reapproprite BOTH names just because.
