Yes, as a I wrote above, I think fan service is what helped contribute to the overall decline in writing on the show. When you give certain fans what they want, it takes away an element of surprise, since you’re just playing into their expectations. Where’s the mystery gone? Truth is, it stopped being a show you could unravel, because there are no more layers of depth to be uncovered. It’s all about surface appearances with the emotional depth of a bad teen movie. And when the official script begins to look more like a fan wrote it than did a professional writer, then the show runners have a problem on their hands. Sometimes you do get a very talented fan who creates a good piece of writing, but the average fan-fiction piece is usually very poorly conceived, even more poorly executed, and very much what you’d expect of an armature writer. And that is what OUAT looks like now: bad fan-fiction. It’s no wonder the ratings continued to decline so much in S3.
Your whole post was a great analysis, but this is my favourite part.

textbookoneParticipantTHIS. FRIGGIN. POST. I bolded a few things I think need to be outlined for some >>
I didn’t ship SwanFire because I was looking forward to Emma and Neal having a pretty wedding or because I have a crush on MRJ.
I shipped SwanFire because it was the logical bookend to a series that was defined by Rumple trying to fix the mistake of choosing power over his son. This show began with Rumple.
The earliest flashbacks are to his childhood.
The series should have ended with his son living Happily Ever After.
The series should have ended with Henry, Rumple’s grandson, being allowed to have his mother(s) and his father. Why pair Bae/Neal with Emma?
Not only did they happen to meet and fall in love in this huge world, they are the two people who suffered the most from Rumple’s mistakes.
They both defined themselves by the belief that they were abandoned by their parents.
They both don’t really belong in this world.
The have a son.
They were True Loves and Soul Mates.
I shipped SwanFire because I always believe in the most simple elegant solution.
The child Rumple lost due to his cursed mistake (Bae), and the child that was created to remedy that mistake (Emma) match.
It was perfect.
It made sense.
They and Henry are the three new central fairy tale characters that were created for this show.
Emma and Neal/Bae were both good people who deserved a happy ending.
They deserved to live Happily Ever After.
They deserved to live Happily Ever After TOGETHER.
A&E, you took Rumple’s son. And you told us that Rumple would NOT be able to get him back. After the mystery of season one’s “BaeWatch” (remember the good old days?), after season two’s introduction of the mystery man who we all deduced was both Bae and Henry’s Father, after everything, for three years, you killed Bae for nothing.
I’m disgusted by Neal’s death because by killing Rumple’s son, in the middle of the third season and while surely renewed for a fourth, A&E undermined the premise of the series. I’m not done with the show because my ship was sunk, I’m done with the show because I think A&E simply aren’t very good storytellers. I’m done with the show because I don’t think A&E are good Showrunners. I don’t think they have the plotting skills or emotional intelligence to warrant spending any more time watching Once Upon a Time.
By failing to grasp how important Bae/Neal was to the central arc of the series and to Rumpelstiltskin, they have ruined their show. Short of backtracking and finding a loophole to bring Bae/Neal back from the dead, they have negated the curse’s reason for being cast.
Rumple reuniting with Bae was in the DNA of Once Upon a Time. Losing him forever, for me, is the end of Once Upon a Time.
There is no reason for me to want to watch any new episodes.
I simply no longer care.
Bravo to all of that! Is there a link somewhere so I can reblog it on tumblr? This is too good not to share!

textbookoneParticipant
As for the Will and Hook being testy spoiler thing, I actually think (or hope) that he will be the voice of the audience, in that he questions Hook’s past or general motives or current possible blackmailing issues. Maybe this’ll be one character that won’t roll over and be blindingly charmed into a ‘bromance’ with him just like that, she said with misplaced optimism.
Who are you and what have you done with my Sad Twin?
Also, yay for it arriving in one piece! It it hadn’t I would have figured that the tiny shoes had laid waste to everything breakable (or “breekbaar” apparently). Them things be deadly (but fashionable!)!

textbookoneParticipantI’ve heard the argument many times from the anti-Neal front that he wasn’t a central character. If you’re looking at it as Amount of Screen Time = Character Importance/Status to the narrative, then no, Neal can never be considered a main character. But if you’re looking at it from a narrative level, then Neal is all over the the plot, right through to the core of the story. Even on this page Jo has very succinctly broken down Neal’s connections to the other main characters (all characters with more screen time). It’s these connections tell us his importance. They illustrate just how woven into the tapestry of the show he was overall, they weave him in and out of the story both before he was officially introduced in the show as Neal, carried him through the story even with minimal screen time, and in a world where these past connections aren’t ignored due to terrible writing, would carry those thread into the future. Just because someone is dead doesn’t mean that they stop affecting your life. They will always be there, just in a different way. But of course, this isn’t one of those shows that understands now necessary it is to address those kinds of things. But I digress…
Just because a character had less screen time does not mean that they were any less important to the plot or the characters. Yes, it might mean that the writers themselves didn’t see them as important enough to focus on, but Neal still made an impact and he was and still is important. And I’m not even sure what I’m arguing anymore… 🙁

textbookoneParticipantNo, we’ve definitely lost pages. Only a few days ago we had something like 1643 pages. I know this because I never close the thread tab in my browser, I just reopen it from the last page we were at the night before and for the last few days I wake up in the morning and have to backtrack significantly to find out what the “new” last page is. I’m surprised that we’ve been hit with that much spam recently. I’m not sure if other threads have been hit with the same volume of spam (because I go no where else in the forum for my own sanity), but it’s kind of crazy. I shouldn’t be surprised though, considering how often this seems to happen.
We have. It’s the aggressive spam removal in play. Our thread was hit pretty hard with spam so we lost about 30+ pages over night. You’re not going mad, my dear.
Yay! Not crazier(er)! Mentally I’m still in the wrong time zone, so I’ve been up until something like 4am and I’ll forget that no one else is awake (except our overseas Ranchers) and I can’t find the thread because the last page I was on disappeared. And because it’s late I have one of those moments of “Was I *really* on page 1633, or is 1617 where I was? I’m so confused…” I will remind myself of that next time I think I’ve lost the thread (though it would be nice if I could adjust back to non-Mountain time).

textbookoneParticipantWe keep losing pages at an alarming rate. Is it the spam filter again?
It’s not so much losing pages as posts that were on one page have now moved to the previous page. For example, some posts that were on page 1616 are now on page 1615. I know this because the Neal pictures I had posted on 1616 are now on 1615.

textbookoneParticipantAnd yes, I mean duet (not duel). They were hoping to be on a reality show for money. Just a community access channel. It would have been awesome, but alas, the bear wanted to sing Aladdin’s part in A Whole New World, and he got a knife and it just went downhill from there. It all makes perfect sense.
I like you. You can sit on my stoop any day.
Yay! I have stoop approval! When I eventually camp out on your stoop, I’ll remind you of this day.
