Back on the thread August is not Pinocchio- https://oncepodcast.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=564&hilit=hot+button&start=20#p4725
I wrote:I’ve been wrestling with WHY Emma does not recognize August on sight ever since he started acting so fatherly toward Henry. I’ve come up with three theories thus far:
1. Emma has gotten in the face of so many dead-beat dads in her most recent line of work that she no longer remembers the face of the fireman back when she worked as a waitress.
2. Emma has slept around with so many guys the one who got her pregnant is merely “one more notch in her bed post”. August could only stir up some visceral recollections for her if she got in bed with him again. Visual recognition won’t work for her.
3. Emma has a major hot button called “abandonment issues”. It’s human nature to go blank and dissociate any encounter that pushes our hot buttons. August’s abandonment of Emma and her baby would have been so painful that she would have blotted it out of her mind to restore her composure.I like my 3rd theory much more than the other two. Emma’s abandonment issues have been worked in other episodes making them seem more central to the character arcs and plot movement.
[adrotate group="5"]the wizParticipantIn the theory I’ve promoted about August, his magic trumps Mr. Gold’s and he will assist Emma in strategically breaking the curse. So it would behoove August to scope out Mr. Gold’s shop and psyche to gain a competitive advantage. He could also be there to assess Mr. Gold’s potential as an ally in breaking the curse, in foiling Regina’s plots of war and in using magic in the process.
August does not need to be related in FTL to be in the shop in SB. Mr. Gold is appropriately apprehensive about August, since Mr. Gold has made many enemies. That does not mean that August has a vendetta against Mr. Gold, only a mission to break the curse.

– a Writer/Editor for his world’s Story, with certain abilities when he erases/edits (a pen-as-sword Knight)
– a Master Archivist/Librarian/Bookbinder that keeps his world’s story in tune with the Universal Story.
– or going back to the Pinocchio thing, He is Emma’s Jiminy “let your conscience be your guide” Cricket, as, he never lies.If the author-in-story thing proves to be true (and I hope it is) the writers of OUAT would have to be performing one of these 3 options themselves. Perhaps #1, but not #2 or #3 in my estimation. I’m more in favor of how magical the show’s writers are being in affecting audiences, cast and crew. Everyone touched by this show seems very inspired to me and that’s amazing! I’m also more in favor of the show’s writers emulating Dodgson/Carroll who also wrote with and Author-in-Story and other very imaginative characters– all functioning within a rigorous framework.

She’s already a princess so her becoming queen is not far off and the knight cannot cross the last river when Alice but in this case Emma to be crowned.
Thanks for this charming! Several different ideas have come together in my mind this morning with your help. August may have what it takes to enter FTL through any mirror (looking glass). He may show Emma how that’s done and advance her dramatically toward becoming a Queen. The magic involved in entering through a looking glass would certainly trump Regina’s which depends on Jefferson’s magic hat.
The caterpillar’s question: “Who are you?” that annoyed EQ and Jefferson in Wonderland — is key to entering through any mirror. When anyone looks in a mirror (except vampires) s/he sees a reflection of personal physical appearances. Nothing is revealed of her/his inner life, soulfulness, connectedness to others or a burden of past history. Reacting to physical appearances prevents entry through the looking glass. Expecting the mirror to show “who’s the fairest of them all” makes the mirror impenetrable. Seeing through physical appearances to the inner truth opens up access through the mirror. Seeing others with this same serene insight sets up their accompaniment when entering through a mirror.
If Emma can come and go between FTL and SB through any mirror, she will be able to elude Regina in SB and mess with what’s happened in FTL to break the curse.

Where a perfect image of Jefferson was getting beheaded, perhaps a perfect image of you would be standing beside yourself 😀

A-ha! You speak with both/and, inclusive logic rather than either/or dichotomous logic. How imaginative!

As I’ve read your recent replies on many different threads in the ONCE forums, I’m VERY impressed with your sharp mind and articulate voice. Logic comes easily to you, or so it appears to me. I’m glad you’re up for some “illogical” imaginativeness. 😀 .
the wizParticipantMerci beaucoups Possum Snoodle!
