ParticipantAbsolutely. Falling for a man and shifting some of your efforts to trying to make that work does not mean you aren’t a strong woman. I have some strong opinions on this, so I’ll just leave it pretty general for the moment and I’ll chime in after I see what people say.

ParticipantOooh, I don’t know. I agree that Belle is more often than not presented as a naive fool (while fulfilling the sexy librarian/Google trope), but while she love all parts of Rumple (even the darkness) that doesn’t mean she wants him to embrace those parts, and certainly has no desire to embrace those parts herself. Even as Lacey she was just a bit more forward than Belle, but certainly not evil. I think having Belle become a Harley Quinn type character would be pretty egregious character assassination. So, naturally, it’s totally plausible thing to happen on this show.
Haha certainly would spice things up a bit. But this is how much I hate her character as it currently stands.

ParticipantI also think at this point, I’m sick of Belle being naive and in some instances, just plain stupid. Let her in on what Rumple is doing. Cement their relationship with the baby. Have Belle admit she likes the dark part of Rumple, and let them be a team (I’m thinking Harley Quinn type character here). No more Belle not realizing what is going on. Let her be villainous with Rumple.

ParticipantWhat can the writers do to get back Rumple back on a track that you personally feel is more palatable?
I would be happy to see his final motivation and led that drive him to the end. No more going back and forth. Stay evil, tell us why we took back the darkness, and let that play out until the end.

ParticipantI wouldn’t be surprised at all to learn that time in the Underworld moves a lot slower than time does in SB.
Wouldn’t be surprised, and honestly, wouldn’t mind it.

ParticipantI disagree that Rumple is speaking in code. He truly believes these things about himself. We see his various acts as heroic (depending on our own POV) but Rumple does believe that he’s unworthy of love, that he’s a villain, and that everyone will always leave him because he’s not good enough. His deep deep abandonment issues (which I discussed two pages back) are extensive and inform much of his psychology. He doesn’t see himself as a hero and belies the issue for whatever reason.
And yes to all of this.

ParticipantS5: Rumple is set up as a hero who pulled Excalibur only to take back on the Dark One’s powers for his own agenda. We are also told that Rumple’s real motivation for leaving the war out of fear and never anything to do with Bae.
I don’t believe he specifically said it had nothing to do with Bae. He didn’t mention Bae, and only mentioned his fear, but I took that as more of emphasizing one of the many reasons he left the war, and the fear reason happened to fit nicely with the plot for the episode of trying to make Rumple brave.

ParticipantThis brings us to another question, and one we’ve been somewhat avoiding. Is Rumple’s inconsistent character writing a result of trying to make Hook look better? Or is it because the writers don’t know what to do with Rumple? Or is it because they find Dark Rumple more interesting? OR is it not inconsistent writing at all?
I think it’s them not knowing what to do with Rumple. I think they have a plan for the end of his character, but they literally had no idea what to do with him in the meantime. I also think they find Dark Rumple more interesting. I really don’t think they are trying to make Hook look better, but maybe.

ParticipantEven crazier thought, what if Henry still is Rumple’s undoing? What if Henry is the one to kill Rumple to rid the darkness forever? I never felt the whole undoing thing was really concrete. Similar to the hopeful evil fairy idea, I have always thought since season 3 that we hadn’t actually seen Rumple’s undoing yet, even though they implied we did.

ParticipantActually I now think that his end at the end of all things is going to be the same as it was in S3A but with a different motivation. Instead of Rumple sacrificing his life for the town, I think it’s likely that he’ll be sacrificed by the heroes in an effort to end the darkness for good OR to end the “final battle”
Bingo. It’s what I’m hoping for. We will absolutely get what this new motivation is. And when we do, he will either overcome it and sacrifice himself again, and actually be the hero, although I doubt it, or the heroes will have to defeat him in order to rid the darkness forever (and somehow they won’t become the dark one by doing so). This is why I went with “Dark vs. Light” as my season 5 finale title prediction. I think the darkness is the overarching theme for this season, and just because Rumple has it back now, doesn’t mean the story is gone. For me, it means that they got an idea to potentially kill off Rumple and get rid of the darkness for good all in one story. So they switched their plan, put the darkness back inside Rumple, to set up the back half and the finale. Rumple’s head is now on the chopping block, and the darkness will be defeated with no more dark ones by the end of season 5.
