But as far as Belle goes, she was very strong in this last episode, until the very end.  I loved that she tossed Gaston into the river.  But then what do we make of her crying on Rumple’s shoulder?  Is she going to give in a little to Rumple’s dark side?  Does this scene actually prove she really doesn’t LIKE the beast in Rumple but maybe is fully acknowledging that in a world with magic and evil magical beings, having dark powerful magic to protect you and your baby may be worth keeping around?

The true love’s kiss is Hades and Zelena.

Yeah I thought about this.  It could very well be the case.  But I’m still holding out that Hades is playing Zelena, even though I really love them together.  I truly am torn, but I’m sort of sick of the villains getting redeemed.  It’s why I love Cruella so much because she’s just straight evil incarnate.

I like how RG put it.  There is a grey area that Belle is not recognizing.  But like what is dark magic?  Is all of Rumple’s magic dark bc he’s the DO?  That’s sort of the impression I got when Emma was the DO bc no one wanted her to do any magic since it was all dark.  But then how could Rumple ever use magic that isn’t dark then?  And like, is using magic to throw a guy who’s trying to kill you in the river dark magic?  I mean what if Regina used her magic to do that?  Or Emma?  Is it not dark magic because they aren’t the DO?  When Emma killed Cruella was that dark magic?  She “used” magic to toss Cruella over the cliff, but if Cruella just fell on the ground and lived would it still be dark magic or is it only dark because she murdered her?  This show needs to convey to me what they consider to be dark magic bc I don’t think even Belle knows at this point.  Apparently opening a lock is dark magic but is it only dark bc it wasn’t theirs?  Like how is this distinguished?  The motion of magic to open the lock remains the same, whether it was their locker or not.  If Emma had used magic to open the locker, would that be considered using dark magic?  Or is it only dark bc Rumple is the DO?  It’s just so confusing bc the show hasn’t nailed down some of it’s definitions thanks to season 5a.

Such a loaded question haha.  They both are right I think.  Belle had to shove Gaston to protect Rumple.  Is that dark?  I mean yeah but she didn’t use dark magic.  She acted in self-defense to save her husband.  If she now thinks that means sometimes you need to use dark magic to get things done, I just don’t follow the logic.

Life is finally springing to life in the Underworld because souls have hope. Yet Hades seems intent to squash it, to keep it in a state of decay so that he and Zelena can rule it together. Does anyone else see a bit of a contradiction: doesn’t true love come with a promise of hope (at least on this show?) So shouldn’t Hades, falling in love and HOPING for a future with Zelena, sorta…grow the Underworld alongside the souls hoping for release from the Underworld?

This is sort of why I don’t trust him with Zelena.  He still wants his power.  So he wants his cake and he wants to eat it too.  But it doesn’t seem he can have Zelena (hope) and still keep the UW in a decaying sort of state.  He’s gonna have to choose and unfortunately I can’t help but think his revenge on Zeus and wanting to switch places with him, will outweigh anything else.  But maybe not.

I’m still going with Red and Mulan until proven wrong, but it’s not looking good.  I mean, Red barely knows Dorothy as far as we know.  How could they share true love’s kiss.  That just seems ridiculously fast, even for ouat.

Overall, I think I liked it better than I thought I would, but to me this was one of the weakest.

    6.5/10

    Liked:

    – Regina and Zelena in the diner.  Rebecca Mader is crushing it right now.

    – Greg still continues to be a great Hades.

    – Ruby is back

    – Belle trying to lay down some ground rules on using the dark magic.  I enjoy it when Belle takes a stand and uses the dagger when she feels she needs to.  But I also liked that she did what was necessary and tossed Gaston in the river of lost souls.  The Rumbelle relationship is making some strides.

    – Emma and Regina using magic together.

    Mixed:

    – Gaston was ok.  I’m glad he actually wasn’t the greatest guy in the world.  But ultimately the flashbacks didn’t matter in the grand scheme of the show, which seems pretty typical of Belle episodes these days.

    Disliked:

    – The dream sequence for Emma.  Like why can she all of a sudden have dreams that foreshadow stuff?  We all know Snow wasn’t going to die, so everything just seemed utterly pointless.

    – Hook continues to be slightly ungrateful and I don’t get why the writers are doing this.

    – Didn’t get to see Belle’s mom.

    – Why did Hades want Gaston to go overboard?  He obviously knew Rumple would defeat Gaston, so then why offer Belle the choice to void the deal for her baby?  This just didn’t make sense to me.  I get he wants things to continue to decay, but was he really that confident that it would be Belle that tossed Gaston into the river and not Rumple?

    – So are they insinuating that Belle started the Ogre Wars?

Thanks! And you could hear the (unbelievably) hilarious bloopers if you were a hero! (wink wink) (or…listen live…)

I suppose I should get on that.

I also enjoy your voice in the discussions.  I think the three of you play off each other quite well, although I haven’t heard the bloopers haha.

A sarcastic comment followed by a legitimate question turns into disciplining. My goodness.

Let me put it a different way. I am taking “discipline” in its broader sense, as a form of power aimed at changing someone else’s behavior. Sarcastic commentary certainly can act this way, especially if there’s already a power differential at play. If I’m your boss, and you are my employee, and I make a sarcastic comment about what I consider your poor performance, that’s a form of disciplining. Your colleagues around the cooler will agree that I’m being a jerk, but there’s nothing you can do – I’m the boss. Similarly, a teacher or professor might make a sarcastic comment about a student’s performance — though, arguably, they shouldn’t — in order to highlight its poor quality or to put the student “in their place.” Similarly, a parent might chose sarcasm, over, say, yelling or punishment — as a form of discipline. My point was that Hook is an adult, so he is already in a position of power in relation to Henry. However, he is not Henry’s parent — or teacher, or boss, or, really, mentor. He’s there on Emma’s behalf, and on the sufferance of everyone else. Notice, for example, that Hook is the only non-parent in the group. When I say that Hook acts like a frat boy, I mean to say that out of the entire room of assorted heroes and villains, he is the only one who is essentially a 20-something entitled white dude, who’s so far only lived for himself. He doesn’t have children, he doesn’t seem to have a goal or a sense of direction beyond what’s so far been dictated by his hormones, he has never had to sacrifice his own goals/interests/desires for the sake of someone else. He’s self-absorbed and preoccupied with his own sense of identity. Most of the other main characters on the show have by and large grown out of this phase.

I guess agree to disagree.  I mean, sure, certain people will use sarcasm to point out someone else’s deficiencies.  Whether that is “disciplining” is just something I’m not sure I agree with.  I use sarcasm all the time.  Most of the time, to just be funny.  But when I do use it to “make fun” of something or someone, I’m not really “punishing” them.  If anything, I’m pointing out something they may not have seen, and instead of straight up telling them, I’m using humor instead.  In this case, I honestly feel like Hook and everyone else were expecting something completely different based on what Henry said he would do.  So when Hook says things like “a riveting story,” that’s his way of saying ok, lovely tail about the Charmings, but what happened to defeating Hades?  It didn’t feel like he was “disciplining” Henry at all, even in the broadest sense I can think of.  I don’t think he was doing it for power, or doing it to try and change Henry’s behavior.  It was just a sarcastic comment, that simple.

Now no one else said anything because they are all adults and Hook still acts like a child sometimes.  So I absolutely agree there.  However, even though he is not related to Henry, I didn’t feel like Hook was really out of line here.  These two know each other very well and he’s been dating his mom for awhile now too.  And while it was a tad much on Hook’s part (he could have simply asked what happened to defeating Hades without the snark), he did say what he said, and he did put Henry down a bit, even though I don’t think he intentionally meant to do that and I think that’s just his character.  But like, I still stand by Hook not knowing the whole situation that Henry failed to tell them about the blackouts and how he didn’t even write that.  But Hook just saying it at all, does certainly say something about his character as opposed to everyone else.
