ParticipantYou know, it’s just also the way Greg Germann is acting that makes it tough to tell. He’s playing the part well, and at this point, it’s too difficult to know for sure what his true intentions are. In one sense, his heart did seem to flicker. And he did seem to be enjoying himself with her on that bike. And then he did make the UW look like storybrooke for her (allegedly). But, he also disappeared when Zelena took the Scarecrow’s brain, then was fairly persistent and quick to declare it true love and try and get that kiss. And then he was very menacing when he told her she would regret what she had done before poofing out of Oz. My guess, he does care about her, but cares more about his revenge on Zeus. And in the UW now, he still wants to be buddy buddy with Zelena, not only because he likes her, but also because he may need her baby for the time travel curse. I think his first plan will be to take Belle’s baby, but he needs a backup plan, and I think he would burn her for baby pistaccio if he had to. It’s sad because finally Zelena is putting love for her baby over revenge on her sister, but Hades isn’t there yet I don’t think. It’s complicated and I love it.

Participantes that! Isn’t the darkness and the evil that comes with it going to be even more tempting now that it’s all the powers of the dark ones which now includes Super Dark! Hook and Savior Gone Dark! Emma?
Fair point. This should be a struggle for Rumple. However, if he only craves the possession of the power, and doesn’t crave doing bad things with it, this still could work.

ParticipantI’m pretty sure Rumple will be the person who Merlin predicted would eventually be able to wield great power without giving into the darkness. Hence, Belle will be able to live with his status as the dark one, provided he only uses his power for good, rather than for evil. With all that being said, however, when I actually pause to consider it, I don’t see how Rumple will be able to prevent the darkness from consuming him. His heart actually turned coal black the last time. What makes him think he’s suddenly capable of not letting the darkness consume him again? What’s to keep the darkness at bay this time–just because he has all the combined power of previous dark ones now? I’d expect that to amplify the darkness, not decrease it. *head desk*
I like this a lot. And I think Rumple could not let the darkness take over like last time because he simply has gone through this before. He has made many mistakes over the years because of his new found power. He was like a kid in a candy shop, and it took over him. Now, with Belle in mind, and many years of living as the DO with the darkness, I think he can be the one person who can wield the power without giving in to the darkness.

ParticipantWell they have established that the pen is a living thing. The pen has the power, and Henry just wields it. I think it would have made zero sense if all of a sudden Henry became an amazing writer and illustrator. The fact that he blacks out, and the pen writes it for him, makes sense I think. Otherwise, how would he be able to write the things he doesn’t see, like Snow and Charming getting through to baby Neal? My guess is that the pen does most of the work, but if Henry wanted to write in the book and change things like Issac did, he also could do that. If this is the case, I don’t see any retcon here, yet.

ParticipantSo I am rooting for this relationship. Although like many others, I do feel like Hades is STILL playing Zelena. It’s so hard to tell! And I feel really bad for Zelena. But boy was she strong. She turned him down twice! It would have been so easy for her to love this guy. The acting was great, it made up for the fast true love nonsense. And how about them falling off the bike…and being like out of breath and Hades asking if Zelena “wanted to go again.” Oh dear….But both are so delightfully terrible people that it was very different for this show, and I liked it. It was rushed, but it was cool, and I love that it was way more complicated than I thought it would be. But I do think, Hades will burn her in the end, and Zelena may even help save everyone.

ParticipantI thought Dorothy was literally terrible. The writing, the lines, the delivery of the actor…I’m sad to know we will be seeing more of her, and that she could be part of this LGBT couple. I hope that’s just the writers trying to throw us off.

ParticipantIf it’s seriously Dorothy and Red, I’ll puke.

ParticipantWhile I agree that the show has shifted dramatically in theme and tone, it is still capable, at times, to invoke the same feelings and resemble the show of S1-3A.
THIS. I think this half season is a good example of some of the feels that I at least got in Season 1-3. They are still capable of at least that, despite the shifts in some themes.

ParticipantOk, so I too am late to the party but here are my thoughts:
Overall: 8/10
Liked:
– The acting. Rebecca Mader and Emilie de Ravin gave the best performances I’ve seen on the show. And then through in Greg Germann, and this was easily the best acted episode of this arc, maybe the season.
– Hades and Zelena backstory. Yes it was a little fast, but as RG said earlier, the actors were so great, that they almost sold it, and they most certainly at least made it work.
– Zelena being a strong woman. It would have been so easy for her to fall for Hades, which would have been the same story we have seen countless times. However, the story, was different, and complicated, and still is complicated. She turns him down, twice! And he seems so convincing. And yet, she can’t trust him, and neither can I. We really don’t quite know if Hades truly loves her or not, and I like that.
– Zelena giving her baby her best chance. That scene was gut wrenching. And for the first time, I actually believed that Zelena cared about her baby. She finally treated her daughter like a person, and not a possession. It was great.
– Scarecrow CGI I thought was actually cool.
– Rumple and Belle. So Rumple’s character has certainly been up for debate. However, if you saw the character the way I have always seen him, this was a great scene. I love how honest Rumple was. Literally just through everything at this woman. And finally, Belle wasn’t stupid. Her reactions were realistic and her acting was spot on. When she said, “Not even for me,” I almost died. And as far as Rumple goes, I have always seen him as a man who wanted power, even when he was a coward doing everything he could do to protect his son. And with Belle, I have always thought that a part of her fell in love with “the beast.” She liked both parts of him. Now I know many people disagree on this, and it’s certainly up for debate, but Rumple finally saying this is who he is and basically telling Belle it is a combo package she gets (DO and Rumple), if she decides to stay with him, was genuinely honest, and I felt like Rumple finally was at least accepting who he was. It will be interesting to see if Belle still stays with him because I have always thought a part of her liked some of “the beast” qualities, but it never was brought up. I was truly blown away when this conversation happened. Honesty was off the charts, and once again, the acting was spot on.
– Henry writing the book. I actually liked that he doesn’t have much control here. It wouldn’t have made sense if he was all of a sudden an amazing qriter and illustrator. And how could he possibly write all the things going on when he isn’t there to see it? The fact that the pen is a living thing, I think helps with these potential issues, and Henry blacking out, and writing these pages, not knowing how he did them, served well because it keeps him as the author, but it doesn’t contradict anything we have seen the authro be able to do in the past. I was ok with this, although it will be interesting to see if Henry can write in the book without blacking out. He may simply be the wielder and may not have any power really. Although, that would contradict what the previous author was able to do.
Mixed:
– The reveal as to why SB looks the way it does….is it really for her? Somehow I still think there is a different reason and he’s just using her again. And it doesn’t explain then why he created the dark curse? Or I guess does this mean he didn’t create the dark curse?
– Toto. Great to see him, but come on, a curtain? A curtain helped Dorothy and Scarecrow escape…
Disliked:
– Some of the dialogue in this episode was not so great. Luckily the actors saved some of it.
– Ghost haunting booth…haha seriously (although them finding out their message got through because of what Henry wrote, was actually really sweet).
– Would they really have given the Hansel and Gretel witch some lines about a breath of the living without that being important down the line? We know how Pan plans to escape. We know how Cruella plans to escape. Maybe this is tied in to how this witch is planning to escape, but if it isn’t, it’s so random.
– No Cruella…sad.
– All the idiots falling for Zelena again. Props to Belle for not falling for it and leaving Zelena on the ground with a busted ankle and taking the baby. Belle was seriously on point finally in this episode.
– How on earth did Zelena get to SB?
– DOROTHY WAS AWFUL.
– Munchkins were useless.
– BABY SNATCHING……And some major recycling at the moment. So Zelena wants her baby back, Regina and Robin want their baby back once Zelena takes her, and Hades wants both Zelena, Robin and Regina’s baby, and Belle’s baby? Ok, ENOUGH. And we have already done this before. He wants it for the time traveling spell…….NOOOOOOO. Please tell me that they aren’t doing this. It’s still early, so maybe things will get switched up, but if this is just Hades wanting to do exactly what Zelena did, I’m going to throw up. This episode would have gotten at least a 9 if this wasn’t happening. I’m still holding out that over the course of the rest of the season, things will change, but this makes me nervous.
Overall, solid episode. Some iffy, and cheesy writing spots, and the HellWitch romance was fast. However, the acting was spot on, and the two of them together actually made me want to root for their twisted love. There were some big character moments in this episode as well, and I enjoyed that Hades and Zelena were way more complicated than a long ago romance that went bad. We still don’t know if Hades truly loves her, and that’s intriguing.

ParticipantI also really miss Emma and Gold’s weird mentor-protege thing, which in the era of Hook seems to have gone the way of the Buffalo.
This relationship I miss. They are arguably the two most powerful people…and yet they don’t get nearly enough screen time together. Their dynamic is one of my favorites on the show.
