Just realized something. We know now the earliest possible point that Regina could Cora people. Hee!
Just curious- what was the trigger for this? I assume we’re talking about Rumple’s (totally fake and totally just bait) magic student?

ParticipantMyril- thanks for clearing that up for me. So many details slip from my mind, it’s nice that someone has my back! XD
I actually don’t dislike Aurora. I do think it would be nice to see more of her so she can develop a bit more as a character. To be honest, it was kind of refreshing to see a princess who… was a princess. I mean, not all royal ladies can be kick-butt crossbow wielding warriors of justice, right? I mean, some of them have to be good at cross-stitching tapestries. Myril is right, it wasn’t the show, but the other characters that treated her like a girly princessy-princess. She herself wanted to help, wanted to get involved, and in the end was brave enough to make a sacrifice to do so. (I do wish the writers had come up with something a little more active for her to do. She was a little bit of dead weight until she was actually a detractor because of Cora’s control.) In the end, I’m okay with Aurora because you know what, there are girls like Aurora out there who are going to relate to being treated that way. It’s nice to see a character like that refuse everyone else’s notion of her and try so very hard to be useful and dedicated.
I don’t hate Mulan, don’t even dislike her. I do think that it seemed like her character went a little backwards though. She seemed more personable during the events of the past than in the present- but maybe that’s just the mask of dedication making it harder for emotions to peek out.

ParticipantMyril- yes! Thanks. I honestly started writing that post as a total crack theory that I thought was funny. Then I went and read the wiki on EPCOT and started thinking, well geez- a group like this (if it existed in the show) probably would be really down on magic. Too unpredictable to work in a utopian world of science and technology. And now… this is my pet theory. (For the next two days anyway.)

ParticipantI’m working on a little one-shot fic right now and I’m wondering…
Do you suppose the Dark One makes his own outfits? XD
They’re pretty unique and it’s not like he’s a stranger to needle and thread.
Maybe it’s a side business. He supplies all the baddies with kickin’ clothing."Nothing is easier than to denounce the evildoer; nothing is more difficult than to understand him."

ParticipantI think I’ve solved it! (Okay, not really but bare with me.)
We only have the finale left and with so many loose threads I think it’s time to assume that the simplest solution is the correct one. There’s limited time to deliver backstory on Greg, Tamara, Hook, etc.
I think we might be able to surmise that Greg isn’t alone in having his life negatively impacted by magic. His experiences during childhood would likely have set him on a path to figure out what happened, why it happened, and how he could stop it from happening again. (In this, he is not unlike Emma. She was driven by her abandonment to start looking for her parents, later gaining skills that helped her in her career as a bondswoman.) He could have met Tamara and others like them, a group organized with the purpose of making the world safe from the dangers of magic and those who wield it. Even in the case of the Dragon, who seemed intent on helping people (in exchange for money, a very honest transaction considering) it could be seen that the power is just too great for anyone to have.
So Greg and Tamara are part of a group. Scientists, spies, what have you- all using futuristic technology to accomplish their goals. (Perhaps a little nod to Tron, there.)
But what is this group? Well, having it confirmed that Tamara’s name should be pronounced “Tomorrow” I started thinking. When I hear “Tomorrow” the first thing that comes to mind is the sort of B-Movie dialogue “Welcome to the worrrrld of tomorrrrowwwww!” Where might you hear such a thing?
Let’s keep it in the family, shall we?
I think they’re a part of the “Eradication of Potential Catastrophic Occult Threats”. XD
Edit: Um. I actually looked it up and EPCOT is an acronym for “Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow”. Hrm.

ParticipantWe know for a fact that Rumplestiltskin has “added to the skill set” of the Dark One. For example, he, unlike Zoso has the powers of a Seer. This was what allowed him to see what events he should enact or set in to motion in order to make his curse possible. When Blue Fairy said he didn’t have the power to do such a thing, this was before he gained that ability- so she definitely wasn’t thinking that he would be able to plan something of such scope. Actually, I went back and watched the early episodes when Rumple is in the dungeon prison in Snowing’s kingdom. When they ask him about how to break the curse Carlyle does a fantastic bit of acting. When he says “On it’s… 28th…. birthday” he’s pausing with his eyes closed and hesitates as though he’s sifting through the future and plucking out the details. He hadn’t created the loophole so that Emma would come on her 28th birthday, he was just reading the fact that in the future, that’s when it would happen. We were getting hints of the Seer’s ability within him even that early on. Love that sort of continuity!
It would be interesting to imagine what (if any) other powers he has collected along the way. Obviously he has a castle full of magical bric-a-brac, but has he absorbed the magical powers of any other beings like the Seer? Over the course of 300 years, it’s a definite possibility!
Returning to the Duke and whether there were literal Ogres involved- I don’t think it takes too much brainpower to think “These ogres are destroying us, make them disappear” so there really had to be another reason why he didn’t use Zoso’s ability for something other than frightening the population. (Honestly, we have no actual indication that Zoso ever went to the battlefield. We only see him with the ‘recruitment team’.)
The idea of a “king” ogre is totally a plausible one- at least “the biggest and strongest” ogre. I think however that the idea of ogres expanding their reach too quickly for humans to react is unlikely. Humans are great at adapting. That’s what we do. However when we’re talking about creatures as large as ogres, a few things are usually standard. There are generally fewer of them than smaller creatures (humans, animals in this case). This is because it takes a lot more resources to power a giant creature than a medium or small one. Also, large creatures tend to reproduce at *much* slower rate. This is why small, quick mammals ended up inheriting the earth from the dinosaurs. XD Okay, okay, maybe getting a little too “because, science” in a discussion about a fantasy show- for all I know, ogres come from rotten magic bean pods and sprout like there’s no tomorrow. Still, we tend to see this sort of concept of balance between “large, strong, and slow” and “quick, clever and small” in a lot of fiction etc so it’s something to consider.
It’s also possible that if this is a battle between men and men, the other side is using ogres, sort of like Voldemort and the giants? 🙂
